OET · OET@Home
OET is the English-language test built specifically for healthcare professionals who want to register and work in an English-speaking country. For internationally trained nurses, doctors, and pharmacists, an OET grade is often the last gate standing between a signed job offer and an NMC, GMC, or AHPRA registration number. Miss a single sub-test grade and your visa, your start date, and sometimes a sponsored post all slip. This page breaks down exactly what each sub-test measures, how OET@Home is proctored by Prometric, and how to clear all four sections in one sitting.

How the OET is built — four sub-tests, all in one sitting
50m
About 42 questions across Parts A, B, and C — a consultation extract, short workplace recordings, and a healthcare presentation. Shared across all professions.
60m
About 42 questions in Parts A, B, and C: a time-pressured expeditious task plus careful reading of workplace and journal-style texts. Also shared across professions.
45m
5 minutes reading time then 40 minutes to write one profession-specific letter — usually a referral or discharge letter from case notes.
~20m
A one-on-one interview with an interlocutor across two profession-specific role-plays — you play the practitioner, they play the patient or carer.
Listening and Reading use the same general-healthcare material for everyone, but Writing and Speaking are tailored to your profession — a nurse writes a nursing letter and role-plays nursing scenarios; a doctor sits the Medicine version. That clinical authenticity is the whole point of OET versus a general English test, and it's why so many candidates find it more intuitive than IELTS.
Each of the four sub-tests is scored 0–500 in ten-point increments and mapped to a letter grade: A (450–500), B (350–440), C+ (300–340), C (200–290), D, then E. There is no combined overall score — every sub-test is graded independently and all four carry equal weight, so a single weak section can hold up your entire application.
OET runs 12 profession-specific versions — Writing and Speaking are tailored to each
| OET Version | Typical regulator / use |
|---|---|
| OET Medicine | GMC (UK), AHPRA, Medical Council of Ireland, ECFMG (US) |
| OET Nursing | NMC (UK), AHPRA, NCNZ — the highest-volume OET version |
| OET Dentistry | GDC (UK), Dental Board of Australia |
| OET Pharmacy | GPhC (UK), Pharmacy Board of Australia |
| OET Physiotherapy | HCPC (UK), Physiotherapy Board of Australia |
| OET Occupational Therapy | HCPC (UK), OT Board of Australia |
| OET Dietetics | HCPC (UK), Dietitians Australia |
| OET Radiography | HCPC (UK), Medical Radiation Practice Board |

You sit the version that matches your profession; Listening and Reading are identical across all 12. Always confirm the exact grade your specific regulator requires before booking — most accept results from any of these versions for their corresponding profession.
Four equally-weighted sub-tests — each graded A–E on its own
Note-completion from a patient consultation, short workplace extracts, and a longer presentation on a clinical topic. Tests real-time comprehension under accent variety.
Part A is a strict 15-minute scan of four short texts; Parts B and C demand careful reading of workplace policies and journal-style passages. Time management makes or breaks it.
One profession-specific letter graded on purpose, content selection, conciseness, genre, and language. The single most common sub-test to fall short on grade B.
Two role-plays scored on linguistic criteria and clinical communication — relationship-building, providing structure, and managing the interaction with the patient.
Because there is no overall average, a profile like A-A-A-C is a fail if your regulator wants B in all four — you would have to re-sit Writing alone (or the whole test) rather than ride a strong section. That asymmetry is exactly why a deliberate, sub-test-by-sub-test plan matters.
Three ways to sit the OET — and what OET@Home day looks like
You sit the exam at an official OET venue, on computer or — where available — on paper. Staff verify your government-issued ID, manage your belongings, and supervise the room. The application fee is around AU$587, or about US$455 for candidates testing in the United States.
You take all four sub-tests from a quiet private room on your own computer, monitored live through Prometric ProProctor. A Prometric readiness agent runs security checks, verifies your ID, and a webcam, headset, and stable connection are mandatory throughout. OET@Home is offered where no physical venue exists in your country.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID matching your OET booking exactly. The ProProctor agent captures your photo and ID before the session unlocks.
A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a 360° webcam room scan. No one else may enter the room while you test.
Stay on-camera and in frame the whole time, including the spoken role-plays. Looking off-screen, talking to anyone, or losing connection can flag or void the session.
OET is built for healthcare professionals migrating or registering abroad
No formal entry bar — but Grade B in all four is unforgiving
Difficulty: The English is healthcare-friendly, but the "B in every sub-test" rule is what trips people up. Writing is the classic stumbling block — candidates lose Grade B on letter purpose, irrelevant content, and genre rather than grammar — and the strict 15-minute Reading Part A punishes slow scanning. One weak section means a re-sit, lost weeks, and another fee.
The OET sits between you and a registration number, a visa, and a start date — and the "Grade B in all four" rule means one weak sub-test resets the whole timeline. Exam Assist pairs you with a specialist who knows the OET Writing and Speaking criteria and the Prometric ProProctor process, and works on a pay-after-you-pass model — so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end, and you settle only after the verified result.
