TOEFL iBT

TOEFL

The TOEFL iBT is ETS's academic English proficiency test, accepted by 13,000+ universities and institutions in more than 160 countries. For most international applicants it's the one English score an admissions office, scholarship board, or visa officer will actually compare line-by-line against a hard cutoff — and a single band below the requirement can hold up an offer or a study permit. As of January 2026 the test runs in a shorter, adaptive format scored on a new 1–6 band scale, and this page breaks down exactly how it works and how to get the band you need.

EXAM FORMAT

How the 2026 TOEFL iBT is built — at a glance

~30 min

Reading

About 50 items. Multistage adaptive — task types include completing words, everyday reading, and an academic passage.

~29 min

Listening

About 47 items. Also adaptive — conversations, announcements, and academic talks with select-a-response tasks.

~8 min

Speaking

11 tasks, fully rebuilt for 2026: Listen and Repeat plus Take an Interview replace the old four-task format.

23 min

Writing

12 tasks: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion.

Section order & timing

The four sections run in a fixed order — Reading, Listening, Speaking, then Writing — for a total seat time of roughly two hours and about 90 minutes of actual testing. Because Reading and Listening are now multistage adaptive, your exact item count and timing can shift slightly based on how you answer. There is no separate, unscored experimental section to grind through.

How the new 1–6 scoring works

Since January 2026 you receive a band from 1 to 6 (in half-band steps) for each section, plus an overall band that is the average of all four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. For a two-year transition period ETS also reports a comparable 0–120 score, so admissions offices can still map your result while they update their cutoffs. There is no single "passing mark" — each program sets its own required band.

WHAT'S TESTED

Four equally-weighted skills — each contributes one section band to your overall average

1

Reading

25%

Academic and everyday passages testing main ideas, details, inference, vocabulary, and rhetorical purpose. The adaptive engine adjusts passage difficulty as you go.

2

Listening

25%

Lectures, classroom discussions, conversations, and announcements. You answer questions on meaning, detail, attitude, and the speaker's purpose — also multistage adaptive.

3

Speaking

25%

Recorded responses scored on delivery, language use, and topic development. The 2026 Listen-and-Repeat and Take-an-Interview tasks reward natural, fluent spoken English.

4

Writing

25%

Sentence building, a short email, and a Write-for-an-Academic-Discussion task, judged on organization, grammar, vocabulary, and how well you develop a clear position.

Because your overall band is a straight average of the four section bands, one weak skill drags the whole result down. Most rejected applications fail on a single section — usually Speaking or Writing — rather than across the board, so a balanced profile is what separates an offer from a near-miss.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the TOEFL iBT — and what to expect on test day

At an authorized test center

You sit the exam at an ETS-authorized center (such as a Prometric site) in a quiet, monitored room. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and provide a headset and workstation. This is the most controlled option if you don't have a reliable private space at home.

TOEFL iBT Home Edition

You take the same test from a private room at home, monitored by a live human proctor through ETS. You'll run a system check, an ID verification, and a 360° room scan before the test unlocks. You need a quiet space, a webcam, a working microphone, and a stable connection. The Home Edition is not offered in every region, so confirm availability for your country.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your ETS registration exactly. The proctor captures a photo and confirms your identity before the exam begins.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a full webcam scan of the room and walls. No one else may enter while you test, and you must stay alone.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera throughout. Speak only during the Speaking section, keep your eyes on the screen, and avoid notes or background voices — anything unusual can flag the session for review.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

The TOEFL iBT is built for academic English proof

  • International students applying to English-medium universities
  • Graduate and PhD applicants who need an English score on file
  • Scholarship and exchange-program candidates with a language requirement
  • Visa and immigration applicants asked for proof of English proficiency
  • Professionals and licensing candidates who need certified English

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

No formal requirements — but the academic bar is real

  • No formal prerequisites — open to any test taker
  • Intermediate-to-advanced English strongly recommended
  • Comfort with academic vocabulary and dense lectures
  • Confidence speaking into a microphone under time limits

Difficulty: The TOEFL rarely fails strong English speakers on vocabulary alone — it trips people up on pace, the academic register of the listening clips, and producing clear spoken and written answers on a timer. With the 2026 adaptive Reading and Listening, early answers matter more, and Speaking and Writing are graded on real production rather than multiple choice. That combination is exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the TOEFL iBT

How is the TOEFL iBT scored under the new 2026 format? +
As of January 2026, the TOEFL iBT uses a 1–6 band scale in half-point increments. You receive a band for each of the four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — and an overall band that is the average of those four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. During a two-year transition, ETS also reports a comparable score on the familiar 0–120 scale so programs can map your result while they update their cutoffs.
How long is the TOEFL iBT and how many questions are there? +
Plan for about two hours at the test, with roughly 90 minutes of actual testing. Reading has about 50 items in 30 minutes, Listening about 47 items in 29 minutes, Speaking 11 tasks in about 8 minutes, and Writing 12 tasks in 23 minutes. Because Reading and Listening are now multistage adaptive, your exact item count and timing can vary slightly.
What TOEFL score do universities require? +
It varies by program. On the old 0–120 scale, many undergraduate programs asked for 80–100 and graduate programs 100+, with top schools wanting 110+. On the new 1–6 band scale, competitive programs generally map to roughly band 4.5–5.5 overall. Because institutions are still updating policies for the 2026 scale, always confirm the exact requirement with each school you're applying to.
Can I take the TOEFL iBT at home? +
Yes. The TOEFL iBT Home Edition lets you take the same test from a private room, monitored by a live human proctor through ETS. You complete a system check, an ID verification, and a room scan, and you need a quiet space, a webcam, a microphone, and a stable connection. You can also sit the test at an authorized test center if you prefer. Home Edition availability varies by country.
How long are TOEFL scores valid and how fast do I get them? +
Official TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from the test date. Under the 2026 format, ETS delivers scores within about 72 hours, which makes it far easier to meet application deadlines and decide whether you need a retake. You can take the test again, but no more than once every three days.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my TOEFL result? +
You settle only after your verified result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details and target band, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
