The four subscores are integrated — every task feeds more than one skill, so the DET measures combined competencies rather than four isolated sections. A lopsided profile (for example, strong Comprehension but weak Production) can pull down your overall and trip a program's minimum-subscore rule, so balance across all four is what reliably clears admissions thresholds.
Taken entirely online — and watched closely by AI, then by humans
There are no test centers and no scheduled slots — you take the DET on demand from a quiet, private room using your own laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone. As of 2026, a second camera (typically your phone) is also required to give the proctors a side view of your workspace. The fee is $70 USD per test.
The DET is not live-proctored — instead, your entire session is recorded and monitored by AI that flags eye movement, extra voices, and other anomalies.
