Listening, Reading, and Writing run back-to-back in a single sitting — you must guarantee an uninterrupted block of about 2 hours 50 minutes, with one optional 5-minute break allowed between sections. Speaking is usually scheduled separately, before or after the other three sections, as a live video call with a human examiner.
Each of the four sections is reported as a band from 1 to 9 in half-band steps. Your overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. There is no fixed pass mark — universities, employers, and immigration authorities each set the minimum overall and per-section bands they require.

Four recordings — a social conversation, a monologue, an academic discussion, and a lecture — each heard once. Tests detail, gist, opinion, and the ability to follow speaker changes and accents.
Three long academic passages with a wide range of question types — matching headings, True/False/Not Given, completion, and multiple choice. Pacing across 40 questions in 60 minutes is the real challenge.

Because the four skills are weighted equally, one weak area drags your overall band down — and many universities and visa routes also enforce a minimum band per section, so a balanced profile usually matters more than a single standout skill.
How the at-home test is delivered — and what to expect on test day
You sit these three sections from a private room on the Inspera Exam Portal, the secure browser IELTS Online runs on. The session is monitored by AI together with a live IELTS invigilator over your webcam, exactly as a centre invigilator would watch the room — checking your identity, your environment, and that you stay on screen.
The Speaking test is a real-time video call with a certified human examiner, usually scheduled before or separately from the other sections. It runs 11–14 minutes across three parts and is assessed live — there is no recorded-response or AI-scored option for IELTS Speaking.
You must be 18 or over and hold a valid passport whose name matches your booking exactly. The proctor verifies your identity before the test unlocks. IELTS Online for Academic is offered only in a list of eligible countries.
A desktop or laptop (no tablets or phones) that passes the Inspera system check, a working webcam and microphone, and a stable connection. A clear desk, no second screen, no phone within reach, and a quiet, well-lit private room.
Stay in frame and on-camera throughout. No one else may enter the room, and reading aloud, leaving your seat, or losing connection can flag the session. Results are typically released within 6–8 days.
