PTE Academic

PTE

PTE Academic is Pearson's fully computer-based English test, accepted by thousands of universities worldwide and approved for Australian and UK study and migration visas. Your score is one hard number that can decide a course offer or an immigration application — and because it's AI-scored against strict skill bands, a single weak section can sink the whole report regardless of how strong the rest is. This page breaks down exactly what the test measures, how it's delivered, and how to get a result that clears your target the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How PTE Academic is built — at a glance

Part 1

Speaking & Writing

The longest part. You speak into a microphone — read aloud, repeat sentences, describe images, retell a lecture, answer short questions — then complete writing tasks like summarize written text and write an essay. Tasks are integrated, so listening and reading feed your speaking and writing scores.

Part 2

Reading

Around half an hour of fill-in-the-blanks, re-order paragraphs, and multiple-choice tasks. Several item types are auto-scored on more than one skill at once, so both accuracy and reading speed matter.

Part 3

Listening

Audio and video clips followed by summarize spoken text, multiple-choice, highlight correct summary, write from dictation, and more. Each clip plays only once, so note-taking and focus are essential.

Timing & structure

PTE Academic is one continuous, computer-based session of roughly two hours across the three parts — there is no separate speaking interview on another day. Recent format updates trimmed the task count to roughly 50–64 items. Tasks are timed individually, and once you move on you cannot return to a task, so pacing discipline is critical.

How scoring works

Every response is graded by Pearson's automated engine against millions of past answers calibrated to expert examiners. You receive an overall score from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English, plus four communicative-skill scores (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) and enabling-skill scores. There is no fixed pass mark — your target depends on the university or visa you are applying for.

WHAT'S TESTED

Four communicative skills — bars show each skill's share of your report

1

Speaking

25%

Oral fluency, pronunciation, and content scored from recorded responses such as read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, and retell lecture. The AI engine is unforgiving of hesitation, unclear pronunciation, and off-topic content.

2

Writing

25%

Summarize written text and essay tasks scored on grammar, vocabulary, structure, and how well you hit the word count and the prompt. Spelling and form penalties can quietly cost marks.

3

Reading

25%

Fill in the blanks, re-order paragraphs, and multiple-choice tasks that test comprehension, vocabulary, and the ability to track logic across an academic passage at speed.

4

Listening

25%

Summarize spoken text, highlight correct summary, and write from dictation, played once only. Tests how accurately you capture detail and meaning from academic audio and video.

The four skills are weighted broadly evenly in your overall score, but because tasks are integrated, one item can feed two skill scores at once — a "summarize spoken text" task, for example, counts toward both Listening and Writing. Many visa routes also require a minimum in every skill, so a single weak band can block your application even when the overall score looks strong.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the test — and what to expect on test day

At a Pearson test center

You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored Pearson test center with a noise-cancelling headset and a private workstation. Staff verify your government-issued ID, take a photo and signature, and watch the room. Pearson runs hundreds of test centers globally; the fee is typically around $200–250 USD depending on country (roughly $235 in the US).

Online at home via OnVUE

PTE Academic Online is the same test taken from a private room at home, monitored by AI plus a live proctor through Pearson VUE OnVUE. You run a system check beforehand, then complete a webcam room scan, an ID check, and an equipment check using an approved headset and microphone before the test unlocks.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name that exactly matches your Pearson booking. The proctor captures a photo and may take a signature before the exam unlocks.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a 360° webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter, and ambient noise can disrupt the speaking microphone.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera throughout. Test-center sittings include a scheduled optional break; the online version generally runs straight through, so plan accordingly. Looking off-screen or talking outside tasks can flag the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

PTE Academic is built for study-abroad and migration applicants

  • Students applying to universities in Australia, the UK, NZ, and Canada
  • Skilled-migration and work-visa applicants needing proof of English
  • Applicants who prefer a fast, computer-based result over a human interview
  • Re-takers who narrowly missed a required band on another English test
  • Professionals registering with bodies that accept PTE for licensure

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

No formal requirements — but the AI bar is precise

  • No formal prerequisites — open to candidates aged 16+ (under-18s need consent)
  • Comfort typing under time pressure and speaking clearly into a headset
  • Familiarity with the exact PTE task types and the strict per-task timing
  • A check of the score every target program or visa actually requires

Difficulty: PTE's content is reachable, but the AI scoring is precise and merciless — a mistimed recording, a microphone glitch, or a handful of spelling slips can drop a whole skill band. The integrated tasks and single-play audio punish anyone who hasn't drilled the exact format, which is precisely the pressure point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about PTE Academic

What score do I need on PTE Academic? +
PTE Academic is scored 10–90 on the Global Scale of English, and there is no universal pass mark — each university, employer, or immigration authority sets its own minimum. Many undergraduate programs ask for around 50–58 overall, competitive postgraduate courses often want 65+, and immigration routes such as Australia's higher-points band require 65 or 79 across all four skills. Always check the exact requirement for your program or visa before you book.
How long is the PTE Academic test and how is it structured? +
PTE Academic is a single computer-based session of roughly two hours, split into three parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. The tasks are integrated, so a single recording or text can be scored for more than one skill, and there is no separate face-to-face interview — you speak into a microphone at the workstation.
Is PTE Academic scored by a human or by AI? +
Every response is scored by Pearson's automated scoring engine, which compares your answers against millions of past responses calibrated to expert examiners. Because there is no human interviewer, scoring is fast and consistent — most candidates receive their official Score Report within two business days, sometimes up to five.
Can I take PTE Academic online from home? +
Yes. You can sit PTE Academic at a Pearson test center or online at home through Pearson VUE OnVUE. The at-home version is the same test, monitored by AI plus a live proctor, and requires a quiet private room, a webcam, a headset with microphone, a stable connection, a system check, and a government ID verification before the exam unlocks.
How long is a PTE Academic score valid? +
A PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the test date. After that it expires and can no longer be used for study or visa applications, so time your test to fall within your application window. Some immigration authorities apply their own, sometimes stricter, recency rules on top of the two-year validity.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my PTE score? +
You settle only after your verified result that meets your target is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
