Why Speaking Breaks Otherwise Strong Candidates
TOEFL Speaking is not a conversation. On the current format you repeat short sentences exactly as you hear them, then answer interview questions about your experiences and opinions — into a microphone, with no listener reacting. Candidates who negotiate in English all day freeze in that format, because the skill being tested is not fluency — it is accurate, intelligible speech production under a hard clock.
ETS designed the section to reflect real academic and campus communication: scenarios need no specialized background knowledge, and you may hear native-speaker accents from North America, the U.K., New Zealand, or Australia. That variety alone breaks candidates who trained on one accent.
That is good news. Because the format is rigid, it is trainable — the same preparation structures, timing drills, and response shapes work on test day exactly as they did in rehearsal, which is not true of the adaptive Reading and Listening sections.
The Two Task Types, and What Each One Punishes

How Speaking Is Actually Scored
Speaking responses are scored centrally by ETS — not by anyone at your test center and not by anyone you can negotiate with. No outside party controls the result, and any service claiming otherwise is lying to you.
Under the scale ETS introduced in January 2026, each of the four sections reports its own score on the 1 to 6 scale, and the overall score is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band — ETS's own example: an average of 5.125 reports as an overall 5. For a two-year transition period after January 2026, score reports also show a comparable overall score on the old 0-120 scale, so recipients still publishing old-scale requirements can read your result.
One more practical note: if your result lands just below a threshold, ETS's current fees page lists a Speaking section score review at US$80 (US$160 for Speaking and Writing together). It is a review of the same recording, not a new performance — the real fix happens before test day, not after.
