Praxis Mathematics

5165 · 5164 · 5162 · 5163

The Praxis Mathematics tests are ETS's subject-area content exams that most U.S. state boards require before they will license you to teach math — covering secondary (grades 7-12), middle school, and subject-specific Algebra I and Geometry endorsements. Districts cannot place you in a math classroom until the right Praxis code is passed and reported to your state, so a single failed attempt can stall a job offer, a certification deadline, or a teacher-prep program completion. This page covers all four math codes, how they're delivered, and how to get the right one done the first time.

WHICH MATH TEST

The Praxis Mathematics family — pick the code your license actually requires

Test Code Grades / Use Questions Time
Mathematics 5165 Secondary (7–12) single-subject license 66 180 min
Middle School Mathematics 5164 Middle grades (commonly 5–9) license 66 180 min
Algebra I 5162 Subject add-on endorsement 60 150 min
Geometry 5163 Subject add-on endorsement 50 130 min

The 5165 secondary test replaced the older "Mathematics: Content Knowledge" 5161 and is the workhorse code for high-school math licensure. The 5162 and 5163 subject tests are not offered everywhere — they exist mainly for states that issue single-subject Algebra I or Geometry endorsements. Verify the exact code in your state's test requirements before you register, because passing the wrong test will not satisfy your board.

EXAM FORMAT

How the Praxis Mathematics tests are built — at a glance

66

Selected-response & numeric entry

The 5165 and 5164 each carry 66 questions: single-answer and multiple-answer multiple choice plus numeric-entry items where you type the exact value. No essay or constructed response.

~25%

Teaching-scenario items

On the 5165, roughly a quarter of questions ask you to apply math inside a teaching scenario or instructional task — diagnosing a student error or choosing a representation, not just solving for x.

∑

On-screen graphing calculator

An embedded graphing calculator and a reference sheet of selected formulas and unit conversions are provided on screen. You cannot bring your own physical calculator into the test.

Timing & pacing

The 5165 and 5164 give you 180 minutes for 66 questions — under three minutes per item including the calculator-heavy ones. The subject tests are tighter: the 5162 Algebra I is 150 minutes for 60 questions, and the 5163 Geometry is 130 minutes for 50 questions. The test is linear, not adaptive: you can flag items, skip, and return within the time limit.

How scoring works

Your raw score (number correct) converts to a scaled score on a 100–200 band. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so leave nothing blank. ETS does not set a national pass mark — each state board sets its own cut score for each license, which is why two candidates with the same scaled score can get opposite results in different states.

WHAT'S TESTED

Content areas on the secondary Mathematics 5165 — bars show each area's approximate share

1

Number & Quantity and Algebra

~30%

Number systems, ratios, the structure of expressions, equations and inequalities, and algebraic reasoning — one of the two largest content blocks on the secondary test.

2

Functions and Calculus

~30%

Interpreting and building functions, linear/quadratic/exponential families, and introductory calculus ideas such as limits and rates of change.

3

Geometry

~20%

Congruence and similarity, coordinate and transformational geometry, circles, trigonometry, and measurement and proof.

4

Statistics & Probability

~20%

Summarizing and interpreting data, conditional probability, the rules of probability, and making inferences from samples.

Category weights vary by code: the 5164 Middle School test leans harder into number operations and proportional reasoning, while the subject 5162 (Algebra I) and 5163 (Geometry) concentrate almost entirely in their named area. ETS publishes the exact percentages and a free study companion for each code — match your prep to the code on your registration, not to "Praxis math" in general.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit a Praxis math test — and what to expect on test day

At a Prometric or Pearson test center

You sit the exam at a monitored ETS-authorized center. Staff verify your government photo ID, store your belongings, and provide an on-screen calculator and erasable noteboard. Seats fill quickly near certification deadlines, so register early in your application window.

At home, proctored via ProctorU

The same test, taken from a private room and monitored live by a human proctor through ProctorU. It runs inside the ETS Secure Browser, which blocks tab-switching, new windows, and shortcuts like Alt+Tab. You need a Windows 11+ or macOS 11+ desktop/laptop, a webcam, and a stable wired connection.

Check-in & ID

Check-in runs about 20 minutes. You can start up to 15 minutes early; a valid government photo ID with a name matching your ETS account is captured before the test unlocks.

Environment scan

The proctor runs a 360° webcam scan of the room. No phone within reach, no second monitor, no headset. Only an erasable whiteboard or transparency sheet is allowed for scratch work.

During the exam

Stay on-camera, chin to forehead in frame, the entire session. The connection is recorded start to finish. Leaving the browser, talking aloud, or losing connection can flag or cancel the session.

WHO NEEDS THIS TEST

The Praxis math tests gate math-teaching licenses

  • Candidates licensing to teach high-school math (5165)
  • Middle-grades teachers needing the 5164 math endorsement
  • Current teachers adding an Algebra I (5162) or Geometry (5163) endorsement
  • Career-changers entering teaching through an alternative-route program
  • Out-of-state teachers seeking reciprocity in a Praxis-using state

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

No ETS prerequisite — but the content range is wide

  • No ETS prerequisite — but your program/state may require one
  • Comfort across algebra, functions, geometry, and intro calculus
  • Fluency with the on-screen graphing calculator interface
  • Ability to reason about student work, not just compute answers

Difficulty: The pain point on the 5165 is breadth, not depth — it sweeps from arithmetic to introductory calculus in one sitting, and the teaching-scenario items reward content you may not have touched since undergrad. Many candidates report that pacing and the calculator interface, not the math itself, cost them the cut score. That's exactly the kind of pressure point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the Praxis Mathematics tests

Which Praxis Mathematics test do I need to take? +
It depends on the license you're pursuing. Mathematics 5165 is the secondary (grades 7-12) single-subject content test most states require for a high-school math license. Middle School Mathematics 5164 covers grades 5-9. Algebra I 5162 and Geometry 5163 are subject-specific tests used for add-on endorsements in states that offer them. Always confirm the exact code with your state board or preparation program before you register.
What is a passing score on the Praxis Mathematics 5165? +
Passing scores are set by each state, not by ETS. Many states set the secondary Mathematics 5165 cut score around 159, and the Middle School Mathematics 5164 cut score commonly sits around 157, but the exact number varies widely by state and license. Your scaled score comes from the number of questions you answer correctly, and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
Can I take the Praxis Mathematics test at home? +
Yes. ETS offers the Praxis math tests both at Prometric and Pearson test centers and at home through live remote proctoring serviced by ProctorU. The at-home version is the same exam, taken inside the ETS Secure Browser, which locks down your computer so you cannot switch tabs or open other applications. You need a desktop or laptop, a webcam, and a stable wired connection.
Is there a calculator on the Praxis Mathematics test? +
Yes. An on-screen graphing calculator is provided for the Mathematics 5165, Middle School Mathematics 5164, Algebra I 5162, and Geometry 5163. You also get a reference sheet of selected formulas and unit conversions. You may not bring your own physical calculator into the test.
How many times can I retake the Praxis Mathematics test? +
You may retake a Praxis test once every 28 days, not counting the original test date. Each attempt requires a new registration and the full fee. Because most states only require the single passing score and not a high one, careful preparation around the teaching-scenario items matters more than racking up attempts.
How long are Praxis Mathematics scores valid? +
ETS keeps Praxis scores on file and reportable for 10 years from the test date. However, individual states and licensing boards often impose their own, shorter validity windows for certification purposes, so confirm how long your state will accept the score before you build your application timeline.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my Praxis score? +
You settle only after your verified passing score is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your test details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
