ETS's At-Home Praxis: Identical Test, Live Human Proctor
ETS's official Praxis at-home page — re-verified 22 August 2026 — states the at-home test is identical to what you would receive at a test center and includes a human proctor monitoring online, with appointments available seven days a week from your home or another secure location.
The setup requirements are the part candidates underestimate: the ETS Secure Browser must be downloaded and installed (Mac or Windows), an equipment check must pass on the exam-day machine, and ETS recommends against using a work or school device unless you have administrator rights to install and configure software. Run the equipment check days early, not the morning of the sitting.
The Equipment Check Is the Real Gate
ETS's at-home test-day page, re-checked 22 September 2026, puts the equipment check ahead of everything else: you must resolve every issue and pass the equipment check before you can check in, and if you cannot resolve the issues before the test begins, the test is canceled with no refund - and you pay to reschedule. ETS's prevention advice is concrete: run the equipment check from the ETS Secure Browser at the time of day you plan to test, run a final check shortly before the session, close unneeded browsers and applications, and keep other devices in the household off the network.
Two published rules reduce panic on exam day. First, technical issues before the start do not cost you test time - the timer does not begin until the proctor enters the password. Second, if your internet drops momentarily mid-exam, the session automatically reconnects you to the proctor when the connection returns; if you are disconnected but still online, the chat function reaches the proctor, and speaking and waving gets attention during the exam.
