Praxis Elementary Education

5001 · 5018 · 7811 (CKT)

The Praxis Elementary Education tests are ETS's gateway to a generalist K–6 teaching license. To certify, you must demonstrate content knowledge across four subjects at once — Reading and Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science — and clear your state's qualifying score in every one. Most states accept the Multiple Subjects (5001), the combined Content Knowledge (5018), or the newer Content Knowledge for Teaching (7811 CKT). This page breaks down each version, how they're delivered, and how to clear all four subjects without losing a semester to a retake.

WHICH VERSION

Three elementary generalist tests — your state and program decide which you sit

5001

Multiple Subjects

Four separately timed subtests (5002, 5003, 5004, 5005), 245 questions over about 4 hours 35 minutes. The most widely required Praxis elementary test — and the one you can retake one subject at a time.

5018

Content Knowledge

One combined 140-question test in 150 minutes, with an on-screen scientific calculator. Covers the same four subjects but reports a single score — so a weak subject is harder to isolate and retake.

7811

CKT (Content Knowledge for Teaching)

Four subtests (7812–7815), about 222 questions in 4 hours 45 minutes. Tests how you would teach the content — spotting student misconceptions, not just solving the problem yourself.

Subtest timing on the 5001

Each of the four subjects is timed on its own: Reading and Language Arts gets 90 minutes for 80 questions, Mathematics 65 minutes for 50, Social Studies 60 minutes for 60, and Science 60 minutes for 55. You can sit all four in one appointment or take them separately on different days.

How scoring works

Raw scores are converted to a scaled 100–200 score per subtest. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so leaving a question blank only costs you. There is no national pass mark — each state board sets its own qualifying score, typically between 139 and 159, and you must meet it for every subject area separately.

THE FOUR SUBJECTS

Official subtest codes for the 5001 Multiple Subjects and 7811 CKT batteries

Subject 5001 subtest code 7811 CKT subtest code 5001 questions / time
Reading & Language Arts 5002 7812 80 · 90 min
Mathematics 5003 7813 50 · 65 min
Social Studies 5004 7815 60 · 60 min
Science 5005 7814 55 · 60 min

On the CKT (7811), the subtests mix straight content knowledge with specialized content knowledge — a large share of items asks how you would interpret a child's work or correct a misconception, not just whether you can do the math or read the passage yourself. That teaching-focused framing is what sets the CKT apart from the 5001 and 5018.

WHAT'S TESTED

Bars show each subject's share of the 245-question 5001 Multiple Subjects test

1

Reading & Language Arts (5002)

33%

The largest subtest at 80 questions. Foundational reading skills, phonics and phonological awareness, comprehension, writing, and the conventions of standard English — the literacy backbone of elementary teaching.

2

Mathematics (5003)

20%

50 questions on numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, and data — with numeric-entry items and an on-screen calculator. The shortest time budget per question of all four subjects.

3

Social Studies (5004)

24%

60 questions spanning US and world history, government and civics, geography, and economics. Broad recall over a huge range of facts is what makes this subject a common stumbling block.

4

Science (5005)

23%

55 questions covering earth and space science, life science, physical science, and the practices of scientific inquiry. Like Social Studies, the breadth is the challenge for non-specialists.

Because Reading and Language Arts is the heaviest subtest and the one most states gatekeep most strictly, candidates from a math or science background often clear three subjects and stall on literacy — and vice versa. The Praxis Elementary Education exam rewards being passable in all four, not excellent in one.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day

At a Prometric test center

You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Prometric center. Staff verify your government-issued photo ID, store your belongings, and watch the room on camera. An on-screen scientific calculator is provided for the math content. The center delivery is identical in content to the at-home version.

At home via ETS Secure Browser

You take the exam from a private room at home, monitored by a live human proctor through the ETS Secure Browser (Windows 11+ or macOS 11+ on a desktop or laptop — no tablets or Chromebooks). At-home appointments run seven days a week. You're allowed one whiteboard or a sheet in a transparent sleeve with an erasable marker instead of scratch paper.

Check-in (~20 minutes)

A photo of you and an ID matching your ETS account name exactly, plus an ear and wrist visibility check. You can start check-in 15 minutes early but must finish within 12 minutes of your slot.

Room scan

A 360-degree webcam scan of the room and your tabletop, done with a cellphone or hand-held mirror. A clear desk, no second monitor, no headset, and no one else in the room.

During the test

Stay on camera and don't talk to anyone except the proctor. The timer keeps running during any unscheduled break, and you must erase your whiteboard notes before you finish.

WHO NEEDS IT

The Praxis Elementary Education series gates the K–6 classroom

  • Aspiring elementary (typically K–6) classroom teachers seeking an initial license
  • Education majors needing it to enter or finish student teaching
  • Career changers entering teaching through an alternative-route program
  • Out-of-state teachers seeking reciprocity in a Praxis-using state
  • Long-term substitutes converting to a full elementary credential

WHY IT'S HARD

No advanced content — but four subjects on one bad day

  • You must pass every subject — one weak area can block your whole license
  • Enormous breadth — early literacy through earth science to economics
  • Sitting all four subtests is a stamina test of nearly five hours
  • On the CKT (7811), you must reason like a teacher, not just a student

The real pain point: Candidates rarely fail because the content is advanced — it isn't. They fail because they're strong in two subjects and rusty in the others, then have to re-pay and re-sit a single subtest (and wait 28 days) while a program deadline ticks. That all-four-at-once pressure is exactly what our help is built to remove.

HOW EXAM ASSIST HELPS YOU PASS THE PRAXIS

The Praxis Elementary Education tests sit between you and an elementary teaching license — and a single rusty subject can stall the whole credential. Exam Assist pairs you with a vetted Praxis specialist and works on a pay-after-you-pass model, so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: just an honest plan around your weakest subtest and a verified result before you settle.

1

Share your exam details

Tell us your state, which test code you need (5001, 5018, or 7811), which subtests are left, your delivery method, and your deadline. A couple of minutes over WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord.

2

Get an honest feasibility answer

We check your state's cut scores and timeline and tell you plainly whether it's realistic — before any money is discussed. If it isn't a fit, we say so.

3

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the Praxis Elementary Education tests

What is a passing score on the Praxis Elementary Education tests? +
There is no single national pass mark. Each state board sets its own qualifying score for the four Multiple Subjects (5001) subtests, and those cut scores generally fall between 139 and 159 on the 100–200 scale. For the single-test Content Knowledge (5018) and the CKT (7811) version, states publish their own passing scores too. Because elementary candidates must pass every subject area, you have to clear each subtest's cut score individually — a strong overall average will not rescue one weak subject.
What is the difference between Praxis 5001, 5018, and 7811? +
All three license elementary generalist teachers but are built differently. The 5001 Multiple Subjects is four separately timed subtests (Reading/Language Arts 5002, Mathematics 5003, Social Studies 5004, Science 5005) totaling 245 questions over about 4 hours 35 minutes. The 5018 Content Knowledge is one combined 140-question test in 150 minutes. The 7811 CKT (Content Knowledge for Teaching) is four subtests of about 222 questions that test how you would teach the content, not just whether you know it. Your state and preparation program decide which one you sit.
Can I take the Praxis Elementary Education test online at home? +
Yes. ETS offers the Praxis both at Prometric test centers and as an at-home, online-proctored exam using the ETS Secure Browser with a live human proctor. The at-home option runs seven days a week and is identical in content to the center version. You complete a roughly 20-minute check-in with a photo ID match, an ear and wrist check, and a 360-degree room scan before the test unlocks.
How long do I have to wait to retake the Praxis Elementary Education test? +
You must wait at least 28 days before retaking the same Praxis test code, and that window applies even if you canceled your scores. On the 5001 Multiple Subjects you can retake only the individual subtests you did not pass rather than the whole battery, which keeps both the cost and the prep targeted to your weak subjects.
Who requires the Praxis Elementary Education exam? +
State departments of education and educator-preparation programs require it for an initial elementary (typically grades K–6) teaching license. Most Praxis states accept the Elementary Education series, though the specific test code and qualifying score vary by state. Many programs also require it for admission to or completion of student teaching, so it can gate your degree as well as your license.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my Praxis score? +
You settle only after your verified passing score is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
