Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators

Praxis 5752 · Reading 5713 · Writing 5723 · Math 5733

The Praxis Core is ETS's basic-skills gateway for aspiring teachers. Dozens of states and hundreds of educator-preparation programs require a passing Reading, Writing, and Math score before you can even be admitted to a teacher-prep cohort, student-teach, or sit for a content licensure exam. It is the first hard checkpoint on the road to the classroom — and a failed subtest can stall an entire admissions cycle. This page breaks down exactly what each subtest covers, how it's delivered, and how to clear it the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the three Praxis Core subtests are built — at a glance

56

Reading (5713)

56 selected-response questions in 85 minutes. Comprehension, main idea, inference, and argument analysis across short passages and paired statements — no outside subject knowledge required.

40+2

Writing (5723)

40 selected-response questions on grammar, usage, and research skills, plus two essays — one argumentative and one source-based — in 100 minutes total. The essays are the part candidates underestimate most.

56

Mathematics (5733)

56 questions in 90 minutes covering number & quantity, algebra, geometry, and statistics/probability. An on-screen four-function calculator is provided; personal calculators are not allowed.

Combined vs. individual sittings

Register for the Combined 5752 to sit all three subtests back-to-back in a single ~4-hour-35-minute session, or take Reading, Writing, and Math on separate dates under their individual codes. Many candidates split the battery to focus prep, then retake only the one subtest that came up short.

How scoring works

Each subtest is reported on a 100–200 scaled-score range with no penalty for guessing. The Writing essays are scored 1–6 by trained raters and folded into the Writing scaled score. There is no national pass mark — your state board or teacher-prep program sets the minimum, so the same raw performance can pass in one state and fall short in another.

SUBTESTS & CODES

The three Praxis Core components and their official ETS codes

Subtest Code Questions Time Score range
Reading 5713 56 selected-response 85 min 100–200
Writing 5723 40 selected-response + 2 essays 100 min 100–200
Mathematics 5733 56 questions 90 min 100–200
Core Combined 5752 152 + 2 essays ~4h 35m per subtest

Codes ending in 57xx are the current ETS test forms. You can register for the combined code or the three individual codes; passing scores are evaluated subtest-by-subtest, so a strong Reading score will not offset a Math result below your state's cut.

WHAT'S TESTED

Three roughly equal subtests — bars show each subtest's share of the combined question load

1

Reading

37%

Key ideas and details, craft and structure, and integration of knowledge — drawing inferences and evaluating arguments from short academic and everyday passages without prior subject knowledge.

2

Writing

27%

Text types and production, language and research skills, plus two timed essays — one argumentative, one source-based — that demand a clear thesis, organized support, and clean mechanics under the clock.

3

Mathematics

36%

Number and quantity, algebra and functions, geometry, and statistics and probability — high-school-level math wrapped in word problems and data interpretation, with an on-screen calculator.

Because each subtest is scored independently, a single weak area — most often the Writing essays or the data-heavy Math word problems — is what stalls candidates, not the test as a whole. Knowing exactly which subtest is your risk is the first step to clearing all three in one cycle.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the Praxis Core — and what to expect on test day

At a Prometric test center

You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Prometric center. Staff verify your government-issued photo ID, store your belongings, and assign a workstation. You're given an erasable noteboard for scratch work. Center seats fill quickly in busy admissions seasons, so book early around your program deadline.

At home via the ETS secure browser

You take the exam from a private room on a Windows 11+ or macOS 11+ desktop/laptop running the ETS secure browser, monitored by a live remote human proctor by webcam. At-home slots are available seven days a week. Tablets, Chromebooks, headsets, and any scratch paper are not permitted.

Check-in & ID

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name matching your Praxis registration. The proctor captures your photo and a 360° room scan before the secure browser unlocks the test.

System lockdown

You must close screen-sharing and remote-access tools (Zoom, Teams, Grammarly) and grant camera, microphone, and screen-share permissions. No second monitor, no phone or wearable within reach.

During the exam

Stay on-camera and in frame; only the proctor may be spoken to. Any phone, tablet, or device use — even on a break — terminates the session and cancels all scores.

WHO NEEDS THIS TEST

The Praxis Core gates entry to most US teacher-prep pathways

  • Applicants to teacher-preparation programs that require a basic-skills test for admission
  • Candidates in Praxis states (e.g. NJ, PA, VA, NC, SC, KY, AK, and many more)
  • Career-changers entering teaching through an alternative-route or residency program
  • Undergraduates who need a passing Core score to advance past a decision-point gate
  • Anyone whose qualifying SAT/ACT scores fall short of a state's basic-skills waiver

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

High-school content — but a real time and essay crunch

  • No degree required to sit it — but most candidates take it to enter a teacher-prep program
  • Solid high-school reading, grammar, and algebra are the realistic baseline
  • Two timed essays in the Writing subtest trip up many otherwise-strong candidates
  • Confirm your state's exact cut scores — they vary widely by subtest

Difficulty: The content is high-school level, but the Praxis Core punishes weak time management and rusty essay writing. Math word problems with an on-screen-only calculator and the two back-to-back Writing essays are where candidates most often lose points — exactly the pressure points our help is built to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators

What passing score do I need on the Praxis Core? +
Each Praxis Core subtest is reported on a 100–200 scaled-score range, and there is no single national passing score. Passing scores are not set by ETS — each state board and teacher-prep program sets its own minimums, though ETS publishes a suggested score commonly around 156 for Reading (5713), 162 for Writing (5723), and 150 for Mathematics (5733). Always confirm the exact numbers your state or program requires before test day.
What is on the Praxis Core 5752 and how long is it? +
The Praxis Core Combined (5752) bundles three subtests: Reading (5713) with 56 selected-response questions in 85 minutes, Writing (5723) with 40 selected-response questions plus two argumentative/source-based essays in 100 minutes, and Mathematics (5733) with 56 questions in 90 minutes. Taken together in one session the combined test runs about 4 hours 35 minutes of testing time.
Can I take the Praxis Core online at home? +
Yes. ETS offers the Praxis Core both at Prometric test centers and as an at-home, online-proctored exam available seven days a week. The at-home version runs inside the ETS secure browser on a Windows or Mac computer with a live remote human proctor watching by webcam. Tablets, Chromebooks, headsets, scratch paper, and phones are not allowed.
Can I take the Praxis Core subtests separately? +
Yes. You can register for the Combined 5752 (about $150) and sit all three subtests in one session, or take Reading, Writing, and Mathematics individually (about $90 each) on different dates. Many candidates retake only the single subtest they did not pass rather than the whole battery.
How soon can I retake the Praxis Core if I fail a subtest? +
You must wait 28 days from your original test date before you can retake the same Praxis Core subtest, even if your scores are not yet reported. Reading and Mathematics scores typically post within days, while Writing essay scores take about three weeks because they are scored by trained raters.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my Praxis Core score? +
You settle only after your verified passing score is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
