CSET · Multiple & Single Subject
CSET is the subject-matter proof that the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) accepts to demonstrate you know your content area before you can earn a teaching credential. Administered through Pearson's Evaluation Systems, it spans the three-subtest Multiple Subjects battery for elementary candidates and 15-plus Single Subject fields for secondary teachers. With most California districts requiring a clear CSET before they extend a contract, a single failed subtest can stall a credential program or a job offer for an entire 45-day retake window. This page breaks down exactly what each subtest covers, how it's delivered, and how to clear it without losing a hiring cycle.

How CSET Multiple Subjects is built — three independently-passed subtests
I
About 52 multiple-choice plus 4 constructed-response items in roughly 3 hours. Covers language and linguistics, reading comprehension, and U.S., world, and California history.
II
About 52 multiple-choice plus 4 constructed-response items in roughly 3 hours. Covers number sense, algebra, geometry, statistics, plus physical, life, and earth/space science.
III
About 39 multiple-choice plus 3 constructed-response items in roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. Covers movement and PE, child development, and dance, music, theater, and visual art.
You can sit all three Multiple Subjects subtests in one appointment of up to 5 hours, or register for them on separate days at 3 hours each for Subtests I and II and about 2 hours 15 minutes for Subtest III. Single Subject fields are structured the same way — separate subtests, each booked and paid for on its own.
Each subtest is reported on a 100–300 scaled score, and you need 220 or higher to pass it. Subtests are scored and passed independently — clearing two and missing one means you only re-sit the one you missed. Constructed-response answers are hand-scored by trained raters, so written items demand more than a lucky guess on multiple choice.
The CSET family covers one elementary battery and many secondary Single Subject fields — each with its own CTC test code and subtest set
| CSET Test Field | Subtests | Who Uses It |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple Subjects | 3 (I, II, III) | Elementary / self-contained K–8 candidates |
| English | Multiple | Secondary English / Language Arts teachers |
| Mathematics | Multiple (incl. Foundational-Level Math) | Secondary math teachers |
| Science | General + Biology / Chemistry / Physics / Geosciences | Secondary science teachers |
| Social Science | Multiple | History / social studies teachers |
| World Languages | Multiple (Spanish, French, Mandarin, etc.) | Language teachers, incl. bilingual authorization |
| Physical Education / Art / Music | Multiple | Specialist secondary subject teachers |
Single Subject CSET spans 15-plus content areas. Confirm the exact test code and subtest combination for your credential on the official CTC examinations site before you register, since some fields offer foundational-level versions with a narrower subtest set.
Multiple Subjects content load — bars show each subtest's share of the elementary battery's items
Language and linguistics, written and non-written communication, reading analysis, plus world, U.S., and California history and social science.
Number sense, algebra and functions, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability, alongside physical, life, and earth and space sciences.
Movement skills and physical education, child development from birth through adolescence, and visual and performing arts — dance, music, theater, and art.
The pain point candidates report most is breadth, not depth: a single subtest can swing from sentence analysis to algebra to earth science, so a strong specialist in one area still has to cover unfamiliar ground. Subtest II trips up humanities-background candidates on the math and science blend, while Subtest I's written history responses catch out STEM candidates who under-practice the constructed-response format.
Two ways to sit CSET — and what to expect on test day
You sit the subtest in a quiet, monitored Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government photo ID, store your belongings, and watch the room on camera. A few CSET fields with extended constructed-response or specialized content are offered center-only, so check availability when you register.
Many CSET subtests are available online from a private room at home through Pearson VUE OnVUE, monitored by a live remote proctor. You download the OnVUE software, run a system test, complete a webcam room scan and photo ID check, and the proctor admits you once the space is clear. Online availability varies by subtest.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your CTC registration exactly. OnVUE captures a face photo and an ID photo before the subtest unlocks.
A cleared desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a 360° webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter while the subtest is in progress.
Stay on camera and in frame the whole time. Breaks are restricted, and looking off-screen, talking aloud, or losing connection can pause or flag the OnVUE session.
CSET gates subject-matter competence for a California credential
No formal entry bar — but the breadth is the trap
Difficulty: CSET is hard because of coverage, not abstraction — Multiple Subjects asks one person to be competent in history, math, science, and the arts at once, and the 45-day retake wait punishes a near-miss. The hand-scored constructed-response items are where unprepared candidates quietly lose points, which is exactly the pressure our help is built to remove.
CSET sits between you and a California credential, and a single failed subtest means a 45-day wait plus a fresh registration fee. Exam Assist pairs you with a specialist who knows the subtest breakdown and the OnVUE environment, and works on a pay-after-you-pass model — so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end, and you settle only after the verified result.
Tell us which CSET field and subtests you need, your delivery method (center or OnVUE), and your test date. Takes a couple of minutes over WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord.
We review your timeline and the specific subtests and tell you plainly whether it's realistic — before any money is discussed. If it isn't a fit, we say so.
Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end. You're matched with a CSET specialist who maps the work around your weakest subtest, the constructed-response format, and the OnVUE check-in — discreetly and confidentially.
You only pay once your passing score is confirmed on your official subtest report. No verified result, nothing owed.
