CFA Level III

CFA Level 3

CFA Level III is the final exam standing between you and the CFA charter — the credential the CFA Institute awards after three levels and qualified work experience. It is the only level with constructed-response essays and the only one where you commit to a specialized pathway, so it demands written reasoning, not just answer-picking. With pass rates hovering near 50% and only two testing windows a year, a single fail can cost you a full year of career momentum. This page breaks down exactly what the exam tests, how it's delivered, and how to get it done right.

EXAM FORMAT

How CFA Level III is built — at a glance

11

Item sets

A vignette (a short case) followed by multiple-choice questions — the same style as Level II. Ten count toward your score; one is an unscored trial set.

11

Essay (CR) sets

Constructed-response sets unique to Level III: you type out reasoning, calculations, and justifications. Ten are scored, one is a trial set.

2

Sessions

Two sessions of roughly 2 hours 12 minutes each. One holds 6 item sets and 5 essay sets; the other 5 and 6 — balancing question types across the day.

Timing & structure

Total testing time is about 4 hours 24 minutes, split into two equal sessions with an optional break in between. Each question set is worth a fixed number of points, and 20 of the 22 sets are scored — the two trial sets look identical to the rest, so you treat every question as if it counts.

How scoring works

Level III is graded pass or fail against a Minimum Passing Score set by the CFA Institute Board of Governors after each window — there is no published pass mark and no numeric score you can report. The essay sets are human-graded, so partial credit and clear, well-labeled working can matter as much as the final answer.

WHAT'S TESTED

A common core plus the specialized pathway you choose — bars show the share of exam weight

1

Common core

65–70%

Shared by every candidate regardless of pathway: Ethical & Professional Standards, asset allocation, portfolio construction, performance evaluation, risk management, derivatives and fixed-income portfolio strategy, and behavioral finance.

2

Specialized pathway

30–35%

The one track you select at registration — Portfolio Management, Private Wealth, or Private Markets. This portion is dedicated to your pathway's advanced content and cannot be changed once you register.

Portfolio Management

The legacy, public-markets pathway. Advanced asset allocation, equity and fixed-income portfolio management, trading, and overall portfolio strategy for institutions and funds.

Private Wealth

Advising high-net-worth individuals and families: the private-wealth industry, business models, fee structures, regulation, tax, and the role of the adviser.

Private Markets

The general partner's role and private-market strategies — private equity, venture capital, growth equity, buyouts, and private debt — including valuation and structuring.

Ethics is woven through the common core and, as at every level, can tip a borderline result via the CFA Institute's ethics adjustment. Choose your pathway deliberately: it locks in roughly a third of your exam content, so picking the track that matches your real-world work usually pays off on test day.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

In-person only at a Prometric center — and what to expect on test day

At a Prometric test center

CFA Level III is delivered as a computer-based test only at approved Prometric centers during a defined testing window. Staff verify your government ID, store your belongings in a locker, and monitor the room. You book your seat through your CFA Institute account once registration opens.

No online / at-home option

Unlike many admissions and IT exams, the CFA Program does not offer a remotely proctored, at-home version at any level. There is no OnVUE-style online sitting for Level III — you must attend a physical Prometric center in person.

ID & check-in

Bring a valid, unexpired international travel passport — the only accepted ID for the CFA exam. Your name must match your CFA Institute registration exactly. Arrive early for biometric check-in.

What's provided

An approved calculator (BA II Plus or HP 12C) is the only personal item allowed at your desk. The center provides scratch material; an on-screen countdown keeps you on pace.

Between sessions

An optional break separates the two sessions, and you re-clear security to return. Phones and notes stay in your locker; breaking testing rules can void your result and trigger a conduct review.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

The final step toward the CFA charter

  • Candidates who have already passed CFA Levels I and II
  • Portfolio managers, analysts, and buy-side professionals
  • Private wealth and private-markets specialists
  • Finance professionals pursuing the CFA charter for credibility
  • Anyone needing the charter for senior investment roles

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

You must clear Levels I and II first — and this level writes differently

  • Must have passed CFA Level I and Level II
  • A specialized pathway chosen at registration (can't be changed)
  • Strong written reasoning, not just answer-recognition
  • Qualified work experience required for the charter, not the exam

Difficulty: Level III pass rates have sat around 49–50% in recent windows, and the constructed-response essays trip up even strong Level II candidates because writing a defensible answer under time pressure is a different skill. CFA Institute suggests roughly 300+ hours of study — exactly the kind of pressure point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about CFA Level III

How is CFA Level III different from Levels I and II? +
Level III is the only level with constructed-response essay sets, where you write out reasoning and calculations instead of only picking A, B, or C. It also introduces three specialized pathways — Portfolio Management, Private Wealth, or Private Markets — so the exam blends a common core (65–70% of the weight) with the pathway you select (30–35%). Levels I and II are entirely multiple choice.
What is a passing score on CFA Level III? +
CFA Level III is graded pass or fail against a Minimum Passing Score set by the CFA Institute Board of Governors after each window. There is no published numeric pass mark and no score you can report to employers — candidate and analyst estimates put the MPS roughly in the 60–65% range. The Level III pass rate has hovered near 50% in recent windows.
Can I take CFA Level III online from home? +
No. CFA Level III is delivered only in person at Prometric test centers. CFA Institute does not offer an online, at-home, remotely proctored option for any level of the CFA Program, so you must book a seat at an approved center within your testing window.
What are the CFA Level III specialized pathways? +
You choose one of three pathways during registration: Portfolio Management (the legacy, public-markets-focused track), Private Wealth (advising high-net-worth individuals), or Private Markets (private equity, venture capital, and private debt). The pathway you pick determines 30–35% of your exam content and cannot be changed after you register.
How long is the CFA Level III exam? +
The exam runs about 4 hours 24 minutes of testing time, split into two sessions of roughly 2 hours 12 minutes each with an optional break in between. Each session mixes item sets (vignette plus multiple choice) and essay sets (constructed response) — typically 6 item sets and 5 essay sets in one session, and 5 and 6 in the other.
How much does the CFA Level III exam cost in 2026? +
For 2026, the CFA Institute registration fee is about USD 1,240 at the early deadline and USD 1,590 at the standard deadline, plus a one-time program enrollment fee paid at Level I. These are CFA Institute fees only; budget extra for the curriculum, prep materials, and any rescheduling.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my CFA result? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details and pathway, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
