CFA-L2
CFA Level II is the middle exam of the CFA Program — the stage where Level I's recall turns into applied valuation and analysis. Every question lives inside an item-set vignette, so you have to model real cases under heavy time pressure across ten finance topics. It is widely seen as the hardest of the three levels: with only a Pass or Did Not Pass result and a fixed number of windows each year, a single failed sitting can cost you six to twelve months toward the charter. This page breaks down exactly how the exam is built, how it is delivered, and how to get it cleared the first time.

How CFA Level II is built — at a glance

Each item set opens with a case-style vignette. Twenty sets are scored and two are unscored pretest items spread invisibly across the exam — you cannot tell which is which.
88
Four questions hang off most vignettes, each with three answer choices. Every answer must be supported by the case in front of you — there are no free-standing questions as at Level I.

11 item sets per session, 2 hours 12 minutes each, with an optional break in between. Roughly 12 minutes per item set means there is no spare time to re-read.
Total seat time is about 4 hours 24 minutes, split into two 2-hour-12-minute sessions with an optional break between them. There is no question-by-question time limit, but with 44 questions and 11 dense vignettes per session, pacing — not knowledge — is what sinks many candidates.
There is no published percentage you must hit. CFA Institute's Board sets a Minimum Passing Score (MPS) for each administration using a formal standard-setting process, then returns a Pass or Did Not Pass result plus a topic-level performance summary. Because there is no fixed cutoff, the bar effectively moves with each cohort.
Ten topic areas — bars show each topic's published 2026 weight ceiling on the exam
The Code and Standards applied to realistic conduct scenarios. Ethics can tip a borderline result, so it is heavily emphasized at every level.
Intercorporate investments, pensions, multinational operations, and earnings quality — interpreting statements rather than just reading them.
Equity valuation in depth — dividend discount, free-cash-flow, residual-income, and market-based models applied to company cases.
Term structure, credit analysis, and valuation of bonds with embedded options — among the most quantitatively demanding topics on the exam.
Active management, factor models, risk budgeting, and trading — the bridge toward the heavier Level III portfolio focus.
Regression, time-series, and machine-learning concepts used to model relationships in financial data sets.
Currency exchange rates, economic growth, and the regulatory environment as they feed into valuation inputs.
Capital structure, dividend policy, ESG considerations, and corporate governance from the issuer's perspective.
Pricing and valuation of forwards, futures, swaps, and options, including option strategies used to manage risk.
Real estate, private equity, hedge funds, commodities, and infrastructure — valuation and return measurement for non-traditional assets.
Weights are published as ranges, not fixed counts, and CFA Institute can shift them between administrations — so chasing a single "highest-weight" topic is risky. The bigger danger at Level II is the item-set format: one misread number in a vignette can quietly cost you all the dependent questions in that set.
Test-center only — and what to expect on exam day
Level II is delivered exclusively as a computer-based test at Prometric test centers. You book a specific center and date inside the exam window through your CFA Institute account. On-screen tools include a basic calculator, highlighter, and a flag-for-review function; you may bring one approved financial calculator (the BA II Plus or HP 12C).
Unlike many tests, CFA Level II has no at-home, remotely proctored route. Every candidate sits in person under center supervision. If your nearest center is fully booked, scheduling early in the window matters — popular dates and cities fill up well before the deadline.
A valid, unexpired international travel passport is required, and the name must match your CFA Institute profile exactly. You check in, have a digital photo taken, and store all personal items in a locker before entering.
Only an approved calculator and your physical passport go to the desk. No phones, notes, watches, or food are permitted in the test room. Scratch material is supplied and collected by the center.
The room is camera-monitored throughout. You raise a hand to take the optional break, sign out and back in, and the clock keeps running on your session. Test-center rules are strict, and breaches can void your result.

Real entry requirements — and a famously steep curve
Difficulty: Level II is widely considered the toughest of the three exams. Recent pass rates have ranged from the high-30s to the mid-50s percent depending on the window, with a long-run average near 45 percent. CFA Institute recommends roughly 300+ hours of study, and the item-set format punishes any candidate who is fast but imprecise — exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.
