CFA Level I

CFA-L1

Level I is the first of three exams on the path to the Chartered Financial Analyst charter — the credential that gatekeeps roles in equity research, asset management, and investment banking. It packs 180 questions across ten topic areas into a single test day, and with pass rates that have hovered around 40–50%, it is the level that ends the most CFA journeys. Miss a window and you wait months for the next quarterly sitting. This page breaks down exactly what Level I tests, how it is delivered, and how to get it done right the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the CFA Level I exam is built — at a glance

180

Multiple-choice questions

Every item is a standalone question with three answer choices (A, B, or C). No vignettes or item sets at Level I, and no penalty for guessing.

2

Sessions of 135 minutes

90 questions per session, with an optional break between them. Aim for roughly 90 seconds per question to finish each block on time.

10

Topic areas

From Ethics and Quant Methods to Fixed Income and Portfolio Management — Level I rewards breadth over depth. Ethics carries the heaviest single weight.

Test-day timing

The exam is two equal sessions of 135 minutes (90 questions each) for about 4.5 hours of testing time, plus an optional break between sessions and check-in time on either side. There is no on-screen calculator — you bring your own approved Texas Instruments BA II Plus or HP 12C.

How scoring works

There is no published number you need to hit. CFA Institute uses a standard-setting process and the Board approves a Minimum Passing Score (MPS) after each administration. You receive only a pass or fail decision, along with a topic-level performance summary, typically 5–7 weeks after your exam date.

WHAT'S TESTED

Ten topic areas — bars show each topic's share of the Level I exam (2026 weight ranges)

1

Ethical & Professional Standards

15–20%

The single heaviest topic. The Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, applied to realistic case scenarios. Often the difference between a pass and a fail.

2

Financial Statement Analysis

11–14%

Reading and interpreting income statements, balance sheets, and cash-flow statements under both IFRS and US GAAP, plus ratio and quality-of-earnings analysis.

3

Equity Investments

11–14%

Market organization, indexes, market efficiency, and equity valuation models — the foundations of stock analysis carried through every level.

4

Fixed Income

11–14%

Bond features, pricing, yield measures, duration, and the term structure — calculation-heavy and a frequent stumbling block under time pressure.

5

Portfolio Management

8–12%

Portfolio risk and return, modern portfolio theory, the CAPM, and the basics of the investment policy statement that the later levels build on.

6

Alternative Investments

7–10%

Hedge funds, private equity, real estate, commodities, and infrastructure — their structures, fee models, and roles in a diversified portfolio.

7

Quantitative Methods

6–9%

Time value of money, statistics, probability, hypothesis testing, and regression basics — the math toolkit underpinning the rest of the curriculum.

8

Economics

6–9%

Micro- and macroeconomics, business cycles, monetary and fiscal policy, exchange rates, and the analysis of currency and trade.

9

Corporate Issuers

6–9%

Corporate governance, capital structure, working-capital management, and capital budgeting — the firm's view of financing and investment decisions.

10

Derivatives

5–8%

Forwards, futures, options, and swaps — their mechanics, pricing logic, and how they are used to hedge and to take exposure.

Weights are published as ranges and can shift slightly each cycle. The practical takeaway: Ethics, Financial Statement Analysis, Equity, and Fixed Income together drive roughly half the exam — so a candidate who is shaky on any of those four cannot make it up elsewhere.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

In-person, computer-based — and what to expect on test day

At a Prometric or British Council center

CFA exams are computer-based and administered in person at one of CFA Institute's global delivery partners — Prometric and, in some regions, British Council. After you register with CFA Institute, you use the Prometric tool to book a seat at a center, date, and time within your window. There is no at-home, remotely proctored option for any CFA level.

Strict in-center security

Expect airport-style check-in: a valid international travel passport is the only accepted ID, biometric and signature capture, secured lockers for all personal items, and a palm-vein or fingerprint scan on every entry and exit. Only an approved calculator and the items CFA Institute permits may be brought to your seat.

ID & identity check

A current, unexpired international travel passport whose name exactly matches your CFA Institute account. No other ID is accepted — a mismatch can cost you the sitting.

Approved calculator only

Just two models are permitted: the Texas Instruments BA II Plus (or BA II Plus Professional) and the HP 12C (including HP 12C Platinum). Anything else is barred at check-in.

During the exam

You are recorded and monitored throughout. One optional break separates the two sessions; you must check out and back in, and the second session's clock does not start until you return.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

Level I is the entry point to the CFA charter

  • Aspiring equity research, asset management, and portfolio analysts
  • Investment banking and corporate finance professionals
  • Final-year students and recent graduates targeting finance careers
  • Career changers moving into investment management or research
  • Risk, wealth, and private-banking staff seeking a globally recognized credential

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

Real entry rules — and a genuinely hard exam

  • A bachelor's degree, OR final-year student status, OR a qualifying mix of work and education experience
  • A valid international travel passport (required to register and to enter the center)
  • Comfort with quantitative reasoning and a strong working command of English
  • No prior finance degree required — but the curriculum assumes you can learn fast

Difficulty: Level I pass rates have typically sat in the 40–50% range, and CFA Institute recommends roughly 300 hours of study. The challenge is breadth — ten topics on one day, with Ethics able to tip a borderline result either way. That combination of volume, time pressure, and a single quarterly window is exactly the pressure point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the CFA Level I exam

How hard is the CFA Level I exam and what is the pass rate? +
CFA Level I is demanding because of its breadth: 180 questions spanning 10 topic areas, from ethics to derivatives, all in one day. Historical pass rates typically sit in the 40–50% range, and most successful candidates report 300+ hours of study. There is no fixed score you need — CFA Institute sets a Minimum Passing Score (MPS) determined by the Board after each administration, and you receive only a pass or fail plus a topic-level performance breakdown.
How is the CFA Level I exam structured? +
Level I is a computer-based exam of 180 multiple-choice questions, split into two sessions of 135 minutes each (90 questions per session) for about 4.5 hours of testing time plus an optional break between sessions. Every question has three answer choices (A, B, or C), and there is no penalty for guessing. Each item is independent — there are no item-set vignettes at Level I.
Can I take the CFA Level I exam online from home? +
No. The CFA exam is not offered as an at-home, remotely proctored test. All levels are delivered on a computer in person at a Prometric or British Council test center, where staff verify your government-issued passport, store your belongings, and proctor the room. You schedule your seat through Prometric after registering with CFA Institute.
How often is CFA Level I offered and how many times can I take it? +
Level I runs four times a year in quarterly windows, typically around February, May, August, and November. You may sit the exam a maximum of two times per calendar year, but not in consecutive windows and not in windows less than six months apart, with a lifetime cap across the program. Plan your retakes around that spacing rule.
How much does CFA Level I cost in 2026? +
For exams from February 2026 onward, CFA Institute removed the one-time $350 enrollment fee. The Level I registration fee is roughly $1,140 USD if you register in the early window and around $1,490 USD in the standard window, all paid in US dollars. Booking early in each cycle is the single easiest way to cut the cost.

There is no upfront fee — you share your registered window, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
