Certified Financial Planner

CFP® Exam

The CFP® Certification Examination is the capstone test that stands between you and the most trusted credential in personal financial planning. It is a single-day, 170-question marathon delivered by Prometric for CFP Board — six hours of stand-alone items, scenarios, and multi-question case studies across eight knowledge domains. The exam runs only three times a year, so a missed sitting can stall a promotion, a client book, or a firm requirement by months. This page breaks down exactly what is tested, how it is delivered, and how to get it done right the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the CFP exam is built — at a glance

85

Session One

The first 85 questions in a 3-hour block. You manage your own pacing — there is no per-question timer, only the session clock counting down.

40

Minute Break

A single scheduled 40-minute break sits between the two sessions. You cannot return to Session One questions once Session Two begins.

85

Session Two

The final 85 questions in a second 3-hour block. Stamina matters — most candidates report the back half is where fatigue costs points.

Question types you'll see

All 170 items are multiple choice, but they arrive in three flavors: stand-alone questions that test a single concept, short scenarios that frame two or three questions around a mini case, and longer case studies that bundle a full client situation with supporting documents you must read and interpret before answering.

How scoring & the pass mark work

The CFP exam is not curved. CFP Board sets a fixed, psychometrically determined passing standard, and you are measured against that standard, not against other test-takers. Results come back simply as Pass or Did Not Pass — there is no numeric score, no percentile, and no official cut percentage published. Recent overall pass rates have run in the low-to-mid 60s percent.

WHAT'S TESTED

Eight Principal Knowledge domains — bars show each domain's share of the exam

1

Retirement Savings & Income Planning

18%

The single heaviest domain: qualified plans, IRAs, Social Security, distribution strategies, and turning a portfolio into sustainable retirement income.

2

Investment Planning

17%

Portfolio theory, asset allocation, risk and return measures, valuation, and matching investment vehicles to client goals and constraints.

3

General Principles of Financial Planning

15%

The seven-step planning process, the time value of money, cash-flow and debt management, education funding, and client communication.

4

Tax Planning

14%

Income tax fundamentals, tax-advantaged accounts, basis, capital gains, and strategies to reduce a client's lifetime tax burden.

5

Risk Management & Insurance Planning

11%

Life, health, disability, long-term care, and property/casualty coverage — and how to size and structure protection against client risks.

6

Estate Planning

10%

Wills, trusts, gifting, estate and gift tax, probate, and strategies to transfer wealth efficiently across generations.

7

Professional Conduct & Regulation

8%

CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct, the fiduciary duty, regulatory bodies, and the rules governing the planner-client relationship.

8

Psychology of Financial Planning

7%

The newest domain: behavioral finance, client and planner biases, money attitudes, and the counseling side of guiding financial decisions.

Weights add up to 100% across the eight domains. Retirement, Investment, and General Principles together make up half the exam, so they reward the most prep — but the case studies deliberately cross domains, asking you to weigh a tax move against an estate consequence within a single client fact pattern.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the exam through Prometric — and what to expect on test day

At a Prometric test center

You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Prometric test center. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings in a locker, and watch the room throughout. An on-screen calculator is provided and a basic financial calculator is permitted, along with a noteboard for scratch work that center staff collect afterward.

Online, proctored via ProProctor

Remote testing is offered to eligible U.S.-based candidates through Prometric's ProProctor platform. A live proctor monitors you by webcam the whole time — you cannot see them, but you can reach them by chat. The interface and security match a center exactly: a walled, well-lit, silent room, no one else present, and a full system and identity check beforehand.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your CFP Board registration exactly. The proctor captures a photo before the exam unlocks.

Environment scan

For remote sittings: a clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a 360° webcam scan. The room must be walled, well lit, and free of noise; no third party may enter.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on camera. One scheduled 40-minute break separates the two sessions. Talking aloud, leaving the seat unscheduled, or losing connection can flag the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

The CFP exam is built for financial planning professionals

  • Advisors building toward fee-based or fiduciary planning roles
  • Wealth managers and RIAs whose firms require the CFP mark
  • Insurance, banking, and accounting professionals expanding into planning
  • Career changers entering financial services from another field
  • Graduates of CFP Board-registered education programs

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

Real requirements — and a famously demanding exam

  • Complete CFP Board-approved coursework before you sit (education requirement)
  • A bachelor's degree is required to certify (it can be completed after the exam)
  • Comfort applying tax, investment, and time-value-of-money concepts to cases
  • Experience and ethics requirements complete the certification after you pass

Difficulty: Roughly a third of candidates do not pass on a given sitting, and the case studies demand that you integrate tax, estate, investment, and insurance thinking under a six-hour clock. Most successful candidates invest 250+ hours of review. That cross-domain pressure and the three-windows-a-year schedule are exactly the pain points our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the CFP exam

What score do I need to pass the CFP exam? +
CFP Board does not publish a fixed percentage you must hit. Your performance is judged against a psychometrically set passing standard rather than a curve, so the bar reflects exam difficulty, not how other candidates did. Results are reported only as Pass or Did Not Pass. Recent first-time pass rates have hovered around the mid-60s percent, with overall rates of roughly 64–65% in 2025.
How long is the CFP exam and how is it structured? +
The CFP exam is a 170-question, multiple-choice computer-based test taken in one day across two 3-hour sessions separated by a scheduled 40-minute break — about 6 hours of testing plus breaks. Questions appear as stand-alone items, short scenarios, and longer case studies that bundle several questions around one client situation.
Can I take the CFP exam online from home? +
Yes, if you test in the United States. Prometric delivers the CFP exam both at its testing centers and as a remotely proctored exam through the ProProctor platform, which CFP Board currently offers to eligible U.S.-based candidates. The remote option uses a live Prometric proctor, a webcam, a room scan, and a strict walled, well-lit, distraction-free environment. The exam interface and security standards are the same as at a center.
What does the CFP exam cost? +
CFP Board uses tiered registration pricing. The early-bird rate is about $825, the standard rate about $925, and a late rate of about $1,025 applies in the final week of a registration window. The fee covers one attempt; retakes require a new registration. Confirm current pricing on cfp.net before you register.
What subjects does the CFP exam cover? +
Every question maps to one of eight Principal Knowledge domains: Professional Conduct & Regulation (8%), General Principles of Financial Planning (15%), Risk Management & Insurance Planning (11%), Investment Planning (17%), Tax Planning (14%), Retirement Savings & Income Planning (18%), Estate Planning (10%), and Psychology of Financial Planning (7%). Retirement and Investment carry the most weight.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my CFP result? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
