Certified Management Accountant

CMA

The CMA is the IMA's global credential for management accountants and corporate finance professionals — the qualification that moves you from bookkeeping into FP&A, controllership, and strategy roles. It is two separate four-hour parts, each blending 100 multiple-choice questions with written case work, and each scored 0–500 with a hard 360 cut. With only three testing windows a year and a three-year clock to clear both parts, a single failed attempt can stall a promotion by months. This page breaks down exactly what each part tests, how it's delivered, and how to pass it the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the two CMA parts are built — at a glance

100

Multiple-choice block

Each part opens with 100 MCQs in 3 hours, worth 75% of the score. You must answer enough correctly to "unlock" the written section — typically at least 50%.

2

Written responses

Two essay or case-based questions in 1 hour, worth 25%. You write calculations and analysis against a business scenario; partial credit is awarded by human graders.

360

Scaled pass mark

Raw scores convert to a 0–500 scale; 360 passes. Because it is scaled, 360 is not simply 72% correct — the MCQ and written sections are weighted and equated.

Two parts, two sittings

Part 1 (Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics) and Part 2 (Financial Decision Making) are scheduled and paid for separately. You can take them in either order, in the same window or across different windows, and you have three years from entering the program to pass both.

The 2026 written-section change

The IMA is replacing traditional essays with case-based questions (CBQs). The Jan/Feb 2026 window keeps essays; May/Jun 2026 lets you choose essays or CBQs; from Sep/Oct 2026 most English-language exams use CBQs only. A CBQ presents a ~250-word business case with interactive prompts (select-from-list, drag-and-drop, calculation) — but it is still graded for that same 25% of the part.

WHAT'S TESTED

Eleven domains across two parts — bars show each domain's weight on its part (per the IMA Content Specification Outlines)

Part 1 — Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics

External Financial Reporting Decisions

15%

Financial statements, recognition and measurement of assets and liabilities, and the impact of US GAAP vs IFRS differences on reported results.

Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

20%

Strategic planning, budgeting concepts and methodologies, forecasting techniques, and the annual profit plan and supporting schedules.

Performance Management

20%

Cost and variance analysis, responsibility centers, the balanced scorecard, and measuring performance against plan.

Cost Management

15%

Cost concepts and behavior, costing systems, overhead allocation, supply chain management, and business process improvement.

Internal Controls

15%

Governance, risk and compliance, internal control frameworks, systems controls, and security measures.

Technology & Analytics

15%

Information systems, data governance, data analytics tools and visualization — a fast-growing area the IMA keeps expanding.

Part 2 — Strategic Financial Management (Financial Decision Making)

Financial Statement Analysis

20%

Ratio analysis, profitability and liquidity measures, and the effects of accounting choices on the reported numbers.

Corporate Finance

20%

Risk and return, cost of capital, raising capital, working-capital management, and corporate restructuring.

Decision Analysis

25%

Cost-volume-profit analysis, marginal analysis, pricing, and the largest single domain on the exam — worth extra prep.

Risk Management

10%

Enterprise risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies across financial and operational exposures.

Investment Decisions

10%

Capital budgeting, net present value and internal rate of return, and discounted-cash-flow analysis for project selection.

Professional Ethics

15%

Ethical considerations for the individual and the organization, applying the IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice.

Weights reflect the IMA Content Specification Outlines effective September 2024. Because every part mixes wide-ranging MCQs with deep written analysis, candidates who can compute fast but cannot explain their reasoning in writing tend to stall on the 25% written block — exactly the failure mode our help is built to prevent.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Both parts run on Prometric — two ways to sit, one strict ruleset

At a Prometric test center

You sit the exam in a monitored testing room at a Prometric center. Staff verify your government-issued photo ID, store your belongings in a locker, and supply scratch materials. You schedule within one of the three annual windows after registering through your IMA account.

Online via Prometric ProProctor

You take the same exam from a private room at home, monitored live through Prometric's ProProctor platform. Beforehand you run a system check, complete an ID verification, and do a 360° webcam scan of your workspace. A live proctor watches the full four hours.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your IMA profile exactly. The proctor captures your photo before the exam unlocks.

Environment & calculator

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach. Only an IMA-approved calculator is allowed; many candidates use the on-screen calculator the platform provides.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera for the full four hours. Optional breaks do not add time, and leaving the seat or losing connection can flag the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

The CMA is built for in-house finance and accounting professionals

  • Management accountants and cost/staff accountants moving up
  • FP&A analysts, budgeting, and corporate finance professionals
  • Controllers and aspiring finance managers / future CFOs
  • CPAs and accounting grads adding a management-side credential
  • International finance professionals seeking a US-recognized title

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

Credentials and experience are required to certify — not just to test

  • Active IMA membership and CMA program entry to register
  • Bachelor's degree (or qualifying credential) for certification
  • Two years of management-accounting or finance experience to certify
  • Solid algebra, accounting fundamentals, and written English

Difficulty: The CMA is demanding — global pass rates for each part hover around 45%, and the timed written section trips up even strong calculators. Most candidates invest roughly 150–170 hours of study per part. The breadth of Part 1 and the heavy Decision Analysis weight in Part 2 are exactly the pressure points our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the IMA CMA exam

What score do I need to pass the CMA exam? +
Each CMA part is reported on a scaled 0–500 range, and you need a 360 to pass. The raw multiple-choice and written scores are converted to that scale, so 360 does not equal 72% of the questions correct. You must also answer enough of the multiple-choice section correctly to even have your essay or case-based responses graded.
How is the CMA exam structured? +
The CMA is two separate parts, each four hours long. Every part has 100 multiple-choice questions worth 75% of the score (3 hours) followed by two written responses worth 25% (1 hour). Part 1 covers Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics; Part 2 covers Financial Decision Making. You can sit the parts in either order and at different testing windows.
Are CMA essays being replaced by case-based questions in 2026? +
Yes. The IMA is transitioning the written section from traditional essays to case-based questions (CBQs). For the January/February 2026 window the exam still uses essays; in May/June 2026 candidates may choose essays or CBQs; and from September/October 2026 onward, English-language exams in most regions use CBQs only. CBQs present a short business case followed by interactive question types, but they are still worth 25% of your part score.
How long do I have to complete both CMA parts? +
After you enter the CMA program you have three years to pass both parts. The IMA offers three testing windows each year — January/February, May/June, and September/October — and you may attempt each part once per window. If you do not pass both parts within three years, any passed part expires and you must retake it.
Can I take the CMA exam online from home? +
Yes. The CMA is delivered by Prometric, and you can sit it either at a Prometric test center or online from home using Prometric's ProProctor remote platform. The online option requires a webcam, a quiet private room, a government ID check, and a 360° environment scan before a live proctor unlocks the exam.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my CMA result? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
