AWS Certification Renewal: Renew, Maintain, or Move Up

Separate three-year renewal from one-year maintenance, then choose the current exam, higher-level, or Skill Builder route for your active AWS credential.

AWS certification renewal: The direct answer

AWS certification renewal adds three years of validity and requires the credential to be active when you complete the renewal action. Depending on the certification, you can pass the latest version of the same exam or a qualifying higher-level exam. AWS now also lists maintenance paths that add one year through eligible paid Skill Builder activity.

Renewal and maintenance are not interchangeable. Solutions Architect Associate can currently renew through SAA-C03 or Solutions Architect Professional, or maintain through Skill Builder. Developer Associate can renew through DVA-C02 or DevOps Engineer Professional, or maintain through Skill Builder. Other credentials have different options.

Start before the final 90 days so one failed exam or scheduling problem does not force expiry. If your renewal deadline is tight, AWS exam support can help you select and prepare the valid route on pay-after-pass terms; you personally complete any required proctored exam.

Renewal and maintenance are different

AWS defines renewal as extending an active credential for three more years. The action can be the latest version of the same exam or another exam that AWS lists for that certification. The new validity period runs from the date you complete the renewal action.

Maintenance extends an active credential for one year through an eligible AWS Skill Builder route. It requires an active paid Skill Builder subscription and, under the current FAQ, an active certification within 90 days of expiration. Maintenance does not silently become available for every exam.

The difference changes both cost and planning. An exam renewal demands test preparation and a proctored appointment but creates a three-year extension. Maintenance can reduce immediate exam pressure for an eligible credential but adds one year and carries a subscription requirement. Compare the exact current route, not a general statement that AWS certification lasts three years.

Foundational AWS certification renewal paths

AWS Cloud Practitioner currently has the widest set of renewal choices. An active credential can renew by completing the free Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner activity, passing the latest Cloud Practitioner exam, passing any Associate-level exam, or passing any Professional-level exam.

That makes the next role-aligned exam a useful renewal path. A candidate moving into architecture can renew Cloud Practitioner by passing Solutions Architect Associate, while a developer can use Developer Associate. The higher exam should still match the job goal; recertification value alone is not a reason to choose the wrong role.

AWS AI Practitioner follows a different table. Current options include the latest AI Practitioner exam, Machine Learning Engineer Associate, or Generative AI Developer Professional. Do not assume the free Cloud Quest path or every Associate exam renews both Foundational certifications.

Cloud Practitioner

Cloud Quest, the latest exam, any Associate exam, or any Professional exam can currently renew it.

AI Practitioner

Use the latest exam or the specifically listed Machine Learning or Generative AI higher-level route.

Decision rule

Choose a higher exam only when it also matches the role and preparation evidence.

Associate AWS certification renewal paths

Solutions Architect Associate can currently renew by passing the latest SAA exam or Solutions Architect Professional. It can also use the listed Skill Builder maintenance route for a one-year extension. Developer Associate follows the same shape with its own latest exam, DevOps Engineer Professional, or Skill Builder maintenance.

The current CloudOps path, which also references the legacy SysOps Administrator Associate name, can renew through the latest CloudOps Associate exam or DevOps Engineer Professional and can maintain through Skill Builder. Data Engineer Associate and Machine Learning Engineer Associate list their own current exam or the specified Generative AI Developer Professional route.

Do not generalize one higher-level link across the whole Associate tier. Solutions Architect Professional does not automatically appear as the renewal route for Developer Associate, and DevOps Professional is not the listed route for every data or machine-learning credential. Use the table for the exact certification name in your account.

Professional and Specialty renewal paths

Solutions Architect Professional and DevOps Engineer Professional currently list the latest version of the same exam as a three-year renewal route. Both also list Skill Builder maintenance for an eligible one-year extension. Generative AI Developer Professional currently lists the latest exam route.

Current Specialty certifications use the latest version of the same Specialty exam for renewal. AWS lists the 50% account voucher as usable for qualifying exam routes. Specialty holders should verify the current certification name because AWS has retired and replaced Specialty credentials over time.

A Professional or Specialty renewal has a USD 300 base exam fee before tax under the current price table, making timeline protection important. The retake policy requires a 14-day wait and another full fee after failure. A last-week booking creates unnecessary financial and status risk.

  • Verify the credential is still active and the current exam is available.
  • Confirm whether the exact certification lists Skill Builder maintenance.
  • Check whether a higher or adjacent exam renews anything else you hold.
  • Use the 50% account voucher only under its current terms.
  • Leave room for a failed attempt, result posting, and a second booking.

Plan the renewal date before the final 90 days

AWS adds renewal or maintenance time from the date you complete the action, not from the old expiration date. If you renew by exam early, the new three-year period starts on that exam date. If you maintain through Skill Builder, the one-year period starts when the eligible maintenance activity is completed.

That rule creates a timing tradeoff. Renewing very early protects status but moves the new end date forward from the completion date. Waiting too long preserves more of the current period but leaves no room for exam failure, scheduling shortages, identity corrections, technical review, or an interrupted appointment.

Use a 180-day planning window. Confirm the credential and options at six months, choose the route and start preparation by four months, and aim to complete an exam renewal with enough time for a 14-day retake. If considering maintenance, verify the current 90-day eligibility and paid-subscription requirements before entering that window.

Budget renewal cost and the 50% voucher

An exam-based renewal uses the current fee for that exam level: USD 100 Foundational, USD 150 Associate, or USD 300 Professional and Specialty before applicable tax. AWS says the 50% discount voucher in the Certification Account can be applied toward recertification or another exam.

A higher-level exam can create more value than repeating the same level when it both renews the current credential and fits the next role. Solutions Architect Professional, for example, can renew Solutions Architect Associate. That does not make the Professional exam easier or cheaper; it changes what one passed attempt accomplishes.

Skill Builder maintenance uses an active paid monthly, annual, or team subscription under the current rules. Compare the actual subscription cost, eligible activity, one-year extension, and learning value with the exam route's fee, preparation time, three-year extension, and retake exposure.

Avoid common AWS renewal mistakes

Do not wait for the badge to disappear before checking the account. The current program requires an active certification for renewal or maintenance, and Skill Builder maintenance has a final-90-day eligibility rule. Save the certification name, expiry date, and official route while the credential is active.

Do not assume a higher exam renews every lower credential. Use the current row for each active certification. Do not treat a one-year maintenance activity as a three-year renewal, and do not assume a paid Skill Builder subscription automatically extends the certification without completing the eligible activity.

Finally, protect the identity and exam path. The certified person must use the matching AWS Certification Account and personally complete any proctored exam. Outside help can support preparation and scheduling but cannot substitute for the candidate or use secure exam content.

  • Active status is required at completion.
  • The extension starts on the completion date.
  • Higher-level renewal links are certification-specific.
  • Maintenance is one year and eligibility is limited.
  • A subscription alone is not a completed maintenance action.
  • Exam attempts still follow pricing, identity, conduct, and retake rules.

Choose your AWS renewal route

Use the same current exam when you want to refresh the existing role and need the cleanest three-year extension. Use a listed higher-level exam when it also matches the next job responsibility and you have enough preparation time. Use maintenance only when the exact certification is eligible and a one-year extension solves the real timing need.

Then test the plan against cost and failure. Record the fee or subscription, voucher actually available, first-attempt date, 14-day retake buffer, result-posting window, and expiry. For online delivery, verify the device, network, room, and ID before booking; for a test center, check travel and appointment availability.

For an approaching deadline, book AWS renewal help with the active credential, expiry date, target route, and diagnostic evidence. Support is available on pay-after-pass terms, while the candidate personally completes every exam and follows AWS and Pearson VUE rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is an AWS certification valid? +
AWS certifications are active for three years after you earn or renew them. AWS now separates renewal, which adds three years, from maintenance through eligible AWS Skill Builder activity, which adds one year. The certification must be active when the renewal or maintenance action is completed.
What is the difference between AWS renewal and maintenance? +
Renewal adds three years of validity and can use the current exam or a qualifying higher-level exam. Maintenance adds one year through an eligible paid AWS Skill Builder route for certifications that list it. The options vary by credential, so use the current official table for the certification you hold.
Can I renew AWS Solutions Architect Associate without retaking SAA-C03? +
The current AWS table lists three options for an active Solutions Architect Associate credential: pass the latest associate exam, pass Solutions Architect Professional, or use the eligible AWS Skill Builder maintenance route. The Skill Builder option adds one year, while an exam renewal adds three.
Does AWS Solutions Architect Professional renew the Associate certification? +
Yes. AWS currently lists passing Solutions Architect Professional as a renewal option for Solutions Architect Associate. It adds three years from the date the Professional exam is completed, provided the Associate credential is active when the renewal action occurs.
Does AWS DevOps Professional renew Developer Associate? +
Yes. AWS currently lists passing DevOps Engineer Professional as an option to renew an active Developer Associate certification. The same Professional exam is also listed for the current CloudOps or legacy SysOps Associate path. Verify the current table before booking.
When can I use AWS Skill Builder maintenance? +
AWS says maintenance requires an active certification within 90 days of expiration and an active paid AWS Skill Builder monthly, annual, or team subscription. Only certifications with a listed maintenance route qualify. Completing maintenance adds one year from the completion date.
Can I use a 50% AWS voucher for recertification? +
AWS says the 50% discount voucher in the AWS Certification Account can be applied toward recertification or another exam. Use the account's current terms and the official recertification table. A Skill Builder maintenance route has its own paid-subscription cost rather than an exam voucher.
What happens if my AWS certification expires? +
AWS says a certification must be active to renew or maintain under the current recertification program. If it expires, do not assume a late maintenance activity will restore it. Check the current exam and account route to earn the active certification again, and confirm any employer or badge consequences separately.
