SPHR
The SPHR is HRCI's senior-level credential for HR professionals who set strategy and shape policy — not the people who run day-to-day HR operations. It is one of the few signals on a résumé that tells an employer you can think about HR at the business level, and many director, VP, and CHRO roles list it as preferred or required. The exam is deliberately hard: forty percent of it sits in Leadership and Strategy, and a single failed attempt means waiting out a retake window and paying the exam fee again. This page breaks down exactly what the SPHR tests, how it's delivered, and how to get it done right the first time.

How the SPHR is built — at a glance
115
You answer 140 questions in total, but only 115 count toward your score. The other 25 are unscored pretest items HRCI is trialing — and they aren't flagged, so treat every question as if it counts.
5
Leadership & Strategy, Talent Planning & Acquisition, Learning & Development, Total Rewards, and Employee Relations & Engagement — weighted heavily toward strategy.
500
SPHR results are reported on a scaled 100–700 range, with 500 as the cut score. The scale is criterion-referenced — you are measured against a fixed standard, not ranked against other candidates.
You have 2 hours 30 minutes of testing time, plus about 30 minutes of administration time for check-in, the tutorial, and a survey. Questions are predominantly multiple-choice and scenario-based, asking you to apply senior-level HR judgment rather than recall a single definition. There's no built-in penalty for guessing, so answer every item.
HRCI uses a scaled-score system so results are comparable across different versions of the exam, regardless of slight differences in difficulty. Your raw number of correct scored answers is converted to the 100–700 scale, and a 500 is the passing mark. You receive a provisional pass/fail result at the test center or at the end of your online session, with an official report following afterward.
Five functional areas — bars show each area's share of the scored content
The largest area by far: developing HR strategy, aligning it to business goals, organizational design, leading change, and advising executive leadership on people decisions.
Building engagement and retention programs, workplace culture, conflict and grievance handling, labor relations, and diversity and inclusion strategy at scale.
Workforce and succession planning, building the employer brand, sourcing and recruiting strategy, and onboarding programs designed at the organizational level.
Designing development and training strategy, performance management systems, leadership pipelines, and career and competency frameworks across the organization.
Compensation philosophy and pay structures, benefits strategy, executive and incentive plans, and using total rewards to attract and retain talent competitively.
Strategy-first
Six of every ten scored questions live in Leadership & Strategy and Employee Relations & Engagement. The SPHR rewards the "why" behind HR decisions, not operational checklists.
This weighting is what separates the SPHR from the PHR. The PHR leans operational and tactical; the SPHR puts 40% of the exam in Leadership & Strategy and tests whether you can make policy-level and business-level decisions. Strong operational HR knowledge alone is rarely enough to clear the cut score.
Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day
You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and watch the room. You take the test on a provided workstation with on-screen note tools, and you receive a provisional pass/fail result before you leave.
You take the exam from a private room at home through Pearson VUE's OnVUE platform, monitored by AI plus a live proctor. Beforehand you complete a system test, a webcam room scan, and an ID check. Your workspace must be clear, and you cannot use physical scratch paper — only the on-screen tools provided.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your HRCI registration exactly. The proctor captures your photo and ID before the exam unlocks.
A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a 360° webcam scan of the room for online sessions. No one else may enter while you test.
Stay in frame and on-camera for online sessions. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing connection can flag the session, so keep your environment quiet and stable throughout.
The SPHR is built for senior, strategy-focused HR professionals
There are real prerequisites — and the bar is high
Difficulty: The SPHR is widely considered one of the tougher HR exams. Its scenario-based questions reward judgment over memorization, and the heavy Leadership & Strategy weighting trips up candidates who are strong on operations but newer to strategy. Most successful candidates put in dozens of hours of focused study — exactly the kind of pressure point our help is designed to remove.

Exam Assist pairs you with a vetted HR-certification specialist and works on a pay-after-you-pass model — so the risk sits with us, not you.
