SHRM-SCP
The SHRM-SCP is the senior-level credential from the Society for Human Resource Management, built for HR leaders who set strategy rather than just execute policy. It is one of the most recognized HR certifications in the United States — promotions, director-level roles, and government job listings increasingly name it by title. The exam is unusual: more than a third of the questions are situational-judgment scenarios with no single "textbook" answer, which is exactly why so many experienced professionals are caught off guard. This page breaks down what the SHRM-SCP tests, how it is delivered, and how to get it done right the first time.

How the SHRM-SCP is built — at a glance
80
Stand-alone multiple-choice questions that test mastery of HR knowledge across the People, Organization, and Workplace domains.
54
Scenario-based questions asking you to choose the most effective course of action — graded on judgment, not recall, which is what makes the SCP harder than it looks.
24
Roughly 24 of the 134 questions are pretest items that do not count toward your score. They are not identified, so you must answer every question carefully.
The appointment runs four hours and includes 3 hours and 40 minutes of actual testing, split into two timed sections of roughly 110 minutes each. The 134 questions are spread across both sections, and you cannot return to a section once it is submitted, so pacing matters from the first question.
Your raw answers are converted to a scaled score from 120 to 200, and a 200 is the reported passing mark. SHRM uses scaled scoring so that forms of different difficulty are equated — meaning there is no fixed "X correct = pass" number published. You receive a provisional pass/fail result at the test center, with official confirmation following later.
Six domains from the SHRM BASK — bars show each domain's approximate share of scored content
Talent acquisition, employee engagement, learning and development, and total rewards — the functional core of the HR profession.
Leadership & navigation, ethical practice, and DEI — tested largely through situational-judgment scenarios at the strategic level.
Structure of the HR function, organizational effectiveness, workforce management, employee relations, and HR technology.
Business acumen, consultation, and analytical aptitude — connecting HR decisions to organizational strategy and measurable outcomes.
Relationship management, communication, and global mindset — how senior HR leaders influence stakeholders across an organization.
Managing a global workforce, risk management, corporate social responsibility, and U.S. employment law and regulations.
Roughly half of the scored content comes from the three behavioral competency clusters (Leadership, Business, Interpersonal) and half from the three knowledge domains (People, Organization, Workplace). At the senior level, the SCP leans harder on strategy and applied judgment than the SHRM-CP — the same scenario framing, with a higher-altitude "right answer." Weightings are based on SHRM's published BASK and may be refreshed by SHRM periodically.
Where you sit the exam — and what to expect on test day
Once your application is approved, SHRM issues an Authorization to Test and you schedule a seat through Prometric within your assigned testing window. You sit the computer-based exam in a quiet, monitored room. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and watch the room throughout.
SHRM previously offered remote proctoring through Prometric ProProctor, but that option has been discontinued. The SHRM-SCP is now a test-center-only exam, so plan to travel to an authorized Prometric site rather than testing from home.
Bring a valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name that matches your SHRM application exactly. The center captures your photo and may take a signature and biometric scan at check-in.
SHRM runs scheduled testing windows each year (typically a spring and a winter window). You apply, get approved, then book a date inside your window — so retake timing is tied to those windows.
No personal items at your station. The two sections are timed separately; the system manages your breaks within the four-hour appointment. Leaving without authorization can void the session.
The SHRM-SCP is built for strategic, senior-level HR leaders
Experience-gated entry — and a genuinely demanding exam
Difficulty: The SHRM-SCP is challenging precisely because experience isn't enough — the situational-judgment items reward SHRM's framework for the "most effective" action, which may differ from how you'd handle it on the job. Most candidates invest weeks of focused prep across both competencies and knowledge, and a single missed testing window can delay a promotion by months. That pressure is exactly what our help is built to remove.
