LockDown Browser + Monitor
Respondus LockDown Browser isn't an exam — it's the locked-down environment your school wraps around a real graded test inside Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or D2L Brightspace. When your instructor also enables Respondus Monitor, your webcam and microphone record the whole session, and the software flags anything it considers unusual for later review. There's no fixed format, fee, or passing score here — those are set by your course — but the consequences are real: this is a quiz, midterm, or final that counts toward your grade and your transcript. This page breaks down exactly how the browser and webcam work, what gets flagged, and how to get the exam handled right.

What Respondus actually controls during your exam — at a glance
01
You download and launch LockDown Browser instead of Chrome or Safari. The exam fills the full screen and can't be minimized; the address bar, tabs, and most menus are stripped away — only Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop remain.
02
If your instructor enables Respondus Monitor, the browser turns on your webcam and microphone and records the entire session — usually after a startup check that may include a photo, an ID scan, and a short room scan.
03
No live proctor watches in real time. The software analyzes your recording afterward, builds a flagged timeline of anything it deems unusual, and hands that report to your instructor to review at their discretion.
While LockDown Browser is running you can't open other apps, visit other websites, copy, print, take screenshots, or use messaging tools. It also detects and blocks hundreds of cheating methods — including virtual machines, remote-desktop tools, screen-sharing, and screen recording — and won't let you exit the assessment until you submit it for grading.
Respondus is a delivery layer, not a standardized test, so the number of questions, time limit, question types (multiple choice, short answer, essay), and passing threshold are all set by your instructor in your learning management system. Whatever the format, the result is recorded directly against your course grade.
Where Monitor's automated review concentrates its attention — relative emphasis based on how it builds a flag report
The dominant signal: detecting your face, whether you stay in frame, and how often your eyes leave the screen. Frequent off-screen glances, leaving the seat, or a missing face are the most common flags.
Other people appearing on camera, talking aloud, background voices, poor lighting, or a startup room scan that doesn't match a clear, private testing space.
Detection of virtual machines, remote-desktop or screen-sharing software, a second monitor, dropped internet, or attempts to leave the locked browser — each can break or flag the session.
A flag is a marker, not a verdict. Respondus Monitor only assembles a timeline of moments it considers worth a second look; your instructor reviews that report and decides whether anything actually matters. Many flags — a stretch, a glance at a clock, a brief lighting change — are entirely innocent.
Two configurations your instructor can choose — and what each means on exam day
The lighter setup: the browser locks your computer down but there's no camera. The exam is just harder to navigate away from — no video of you is captured. Some instructors pair this with a campus testing center instead of webcam recording.
The full setup: the locked browser plus webcam and microphone recording from a private room at home. You complete a startup sequence, then the software records the whole exam and produces an automated flag report for your instructor — no live proctor is on the call.
A webcam test, then any steps your instructor adds — a photo, a government or student ID held to the camera, and a short video showing your desk and surroundings before the exam unlocks.
Windows 10/11 or macOS 12+, roughly 300–400 MB free disk space, a stable broadband connection, and — for Monitor — a working webcam and microphone plus at least 4 GB of available RAM. iPad and Chromebook only with instructor-enabled support.
Stay in frame and well-lit, keep the room quiet and private, and avoid second monitors or other devices. You can't leave the locked browser until you submit, so a stable connection and a charged laptop matter.
Respondus shows up across online and hybrid coursework
No prerequisites to install it — but the environment is unforgiving
Difficulty: The browser itself is easy to install, but the pressure is real — a frozen webcam, a dropped connection, or a flagged moment can derail an otherwise solid attempt, and the exam still tests genuine course content under a timer. Removing that technical and proctoring stress is exactly what our help is built for.
