Proctorio
Proctorio is not a single exam — it's automated proctoring software your school layers on top of its own online quizzes and final exams. It runs as a browser extension in Chrome or Edge and watches your webcam, microphone, and screen while you test inside Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or Brightspace. One stuck camera, one flagged glance, or a failed room scan can lock you out or get a course grade challenged, so understanding exactly how Proctorio behaves before you launch matters as much as knowing the material.

A proctoring layer your school adds to its own online exam — at a glance
1
Proctorio runs as a browser extension in desktop Chrome or Microsoft Edge. You add it once; a green shield icon appears in your toolbar when monitoring is active.
2
Before the test unlocks, Proctorio runs a camera, microphone, and connection check — and, if your instructor enables them, a photo ID capture and a 360° room scan.
3
You answer questions inside your LMS while Proctorio records and analyzes the session, then hands a flagged report to your instructor to review afterward.
Unlike services that put a human on a video call, Proctorio is fully automated. It records your webcam, audio, and screen and assigns "suspicion levels" to behaviors in real time. A person — your instructor or institution — only reviews the recording and flags after the exam is over, and decides what they mean.
Proctorio is highly configurable. Your instructor decides which controls are on: room scan, screen recording, browser lock-down, ID verification, a time limit, copy/paste blocking, and which behaviors raise a flag. Two exams using "Proctorio" can feel completely different — always read the rules your course posts for the specific test.
The exam content is your course's — these are the signals Proctorio watches. Bars show how often each is enabled.
A photo ID capture and a 360° room scan confirm who you are and that the space is clear. Both are optional settings, but most graded exams turn them on.
Face and gaze detection flags looking off-screen for long stretches, a second face appearing, or you leaving the frame. It detects a face's presence — it is not biometric facial recognition.
Screen recording, browser lock-down, new-tab detection, second-monitor detection, and copy/paste blocking. Microphone audio can flag whispers, beeps, or another voice in the room.
Important: Proctorio only records when those settings are switched on, and the green shield icon shows when it is active. A flag is not an accusation — it is a marker your instructor reviews. Calm, predictable test-day behavior in a clean, private room is what keeps a session clean.
What you need on test day — and what trips most people up
You must use desktop Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge with the official Proctorio extension installed and enabled — no other browsers work. Chromebooks are only supported when your institution allows it, and managed-device policies can block the extension. Confirm your LMS recognizes the test as Proctorio-enabled before you start.
Proctorio's system test checks your camera, microphone, internet, and extension before the real exam. Run it a day ahead, not five minutes before — most last-minute panics are a blocked camera permission, an outdated browser, or a VPN/firewall the pre-check rejects. A stable wired connection beats Wi-Fi for the room scan and recording.
If enabled, you hold a valid photo ID up to the webcam so Proctorio can capture it. Have it ready and well lit before you launch — a blurry capture is a common reason a session stalls.
A 360° webcam sweep of your space, plus a clear desk: no phone in reach, no second monitor, no notes unless your instructor explicitly allows them. No one else should be in the room.
Stay in frame and on-camera the whole time. Looking down, leaving your seat, opening a new tab, or another voice can each raise a flag. Don't close the tab — losing connection mid-exam can void the attempt.
You'll meet Proctorio if your school assigns it to your exam
The exam's hard — the setup makes it harder
The real difficulty: Proctorio adds pressure on top of the actual material. Knowing your subject is the foundation — but a frozen room scan, a flagged glance, or a dropped connection can derail an otherwise solid exam. That technical and nerve-related friction is exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.
