PMI Risk Management Professional

PMI-RMP

The PMI-RMP is the Project Management Institute's specialist credential for professionals who identify, analyze, and respond to risk on complex projects. Unlike the broad PMP, it goes deep on quantitative analysis, response planning, and stakeholder risk communication — and the exam is reported only as Pass or Fail, so there's no partial credit to fall back on. With an application that PMI can audit and a fee that runs into the hundreds, a failed attempt costs real time and money. This page breaks down exactly what's tested, how it's delivered, and how to get it done right the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the PMI-RMP is built — at a glance

115

Total Questions

Multiple-choice and multiple-response items. 15 are unscored pretest questions seeded randomly, so 100 actually count toward your result.

150

Minutes

Two and a half hours of seat time with one optional 10-minute break around the midpoint. That's roughly 78 seconds per question.

5

Domains

Risk Strategy & Planning, Risk Identification, Risk Analysis, Risk Response, and Monitor & Close Risks — weighted by how much of the exam each covers.

Timing & question types

The exam is linear (not adaptive): you can move forward and back, flag questions, and review before submitting within the 150 minutes. Expect a mix of single-answer multiple choice and "select all that apply" multiple-response items, several of which present a short project scenario before asking what a risk professional should do next.

How scoring works

PMI reports the PMI-RMP only as Pass or Fail — there is no published numeric score or fixed percentage cutoff. Your result is set against a panel-determined passing standard. Alongside the verdict, PMI gives you a proficiency rating for each domain (Below Target, Needs Improvement, Target, or Above Target) so you understand where you were strongest and weakest.

WHAT'S TESTED

Five risk domains — bars show each domain's share of the scored questions

1

Risk Strategy & Planning

22%

Building the risk management plan, defining risk appetite and thresholds, tailoring the process to the project, and aligning risk activities with organizational governance.

2

Risk Identification

23%

Surfacing individual and overall project risks using techniques like brainstorming, interviews, checklists, assumption analysis, and SWOT — and capturing them in a clear risk register.

3

Risk Analysis

23%

The heaviest quantitative domain: qualitative prioritization plus quantitative methods such as Monte Carlo simulation, EMV, decision trees, sensitivity (tornado) analysis, and probability distributions.

4

Risk Response

13%

Selecting and planning responses to threats (avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept, escalate) and opportunities (exploit, share, enhance, accept), and managing contingency and management reserves.

5

Monitor & Close Risks

19%

Tracking identified risks, evaluating response effectiveness, running reserve and trend analysis, communicating status to stakeholders, and capturing lessons learned as risks close out.

Where points are won and lost

Risk Identification and Risk Analysis together make up almost half the exam, and Analysis is where most candidates feel the squeeze because it expects you to actually interpret quantitative outputs, not just name techniques.

Domain weights are taken from PMI's current PMI-RMP Examination Content Outline. Because scoring is Pass/Fail across all five domains combined, a weak showing in the two largest domains is hard to offset elsewhere — balanced preparation across the full risk lifecycle matters.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day

At a Pearson VUE test center

You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and watch the room. You're provided an erasable noteboard or scratch paper for risk calculations. This is the most distraction-free way to take the PMI-RMP.

Online, proctored via OnVUE

You take the exam from a private room at home or office, monitored remotely by Pearson VUE OnVUE. You'll run a system test, complete a webcam room scan and ID check, and stay on camera throughout. Physical scratch paper isn't allowed online — you use the on-screen whiteboard instead.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with your name matching your PMI profile exactly. The proctor captures a photo and ID images before the exam unlocks.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a 360° webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter while the exam is in progress.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera the whole time. One optional 10-minute break is allowed. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing connection can flag the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

The PMI-RMP is built for risk-focused project professionals

  • Project, program, and portfolio managers who own risk
  • Dedicated risk analysts and risk managers on large projects
  • PMP holders specializing into enterprise risk roles
  • Engineering, construction, and infrastructure professionals
  • PMOs standardizing risk practice across a portfolio

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

PMI requires documented experience — and may audit it

  • Secondary diploma path: 36 months of project risk management experience (last 5 years) + 40 hours of risk education
  • Four-year degree path: 24 months of project risk management experience (last 5 years) + 30 hours of risk education
  • Applications can be selected for PMI audit, requiring signed experience verification
  • Comfort with quantitative methods (EMV, Monte Carlo) strongly recommended

Difficulty: The PMI-RMP is narrower than the PMP but deeper on quantitative risk analysis, so candidates who are strong on process but rusty on the math often underestimate it. Most successful candidates invest 60–100 hours of focused study and work multiple full-length practice exams — exactly the kind of pressure point our help is designed to remove.

Straight answers about the PMI-RMP

How many questions are on the PMI-RMP exam and how long is it? +
The PMI-RMP exam has 115 questions to be completed in 150 minutes (2.5 hours). Of those 115, 15 are unscored pretest questions mixed in randomly, so only 100 actually count toward your result. Questions are multiple-choice and multiple-response, and there is one optional 10-minute break roughly halfway through.
Is the PMI-RMP scored as a number or Pass/Fail? +
The PMI-RMP is reported as Pass or Fail — there is no scaled score or fixed percentage published by PMI. After the exam you receive a performance rating per domain (Below Target, Needs Improvement, Target, or Above Target) so you can see your relative strengths, but the official outcome is simply pass or fail.
What are the PMI-RMP eligibility requirements? +
There are two paths. With a secondary diploma (high-school diploma, associate degree, or global equivalent) you need 36 months of project risk management experience earned in the last 5 years plus 40 hours of risk management education. With a four-year degree you need 24 months of project risk management experience in the last 5 years plus 30 hours of risk management education. PMI may audit your application, so keep records of your experience and training.
How much does the PMI-RMP exam cost? +
The PMI-RMP exam fee is about $520 USD for PMI members and $670 USD for non-members. Because PMI membership is around $139 a year, joining first and paying the member rate can work out close to the same total as the non-member fee, while also unlocking discounted resources and a free digital copy of PMI standards.
Can I take the PMI-RMP online from home? +
Yes. PMI delivers the PMI-RMP through Pearson VUE, either at a physical Pearson VUE test center or online via OnVUE remote proctoring from a private room at home. The online option requires a webcam, a stable connection, a clear workspace, a government ID check, and a room scan before the exam unlocks.
How long is the PMI-RMP valid and how do I renew it? +
The PMI-RMP credential is valid for three years. To keep it active you must earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) in risk-related topics each three-year cycle and report them through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) system.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I pass the PMI-RMP? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands.
