The 180 questions are split into three blocks. After you finish questions 1–60 you can take an optional 10-minute break; another follows question 120. The clock stops during breaks, but you may not review earlier answers once a break is taken — pacing roughly one question per 75 seconds keeps you on track.
PMI does not publish a fixed passing percentage. The exam is scored with a psychometric model and your result is reported as Pass or Fail. Within that, each domain is rated Above Target, Target, Below Target, or Needs Improvement — so a balanced performance across all three domains matters more than dominating one. A handful of unscored pretest questions are mixed in and do not count.
Heads-up: PMI is updating the PMP exam on 9 July 2026. The new version has 185 questions and shifts the domain weights toward Business Environment (adding AI in project management and sustainability). If your appointment falls on or after that date, confirm which Examination Content Outline applies before you prep.

Leading and building teams: conflict resolution, empowerment, stakeholder engagement, mentoring, removing blockers, and servant leadership. This is where many first-timers lose points — answers reward proactive, people-first judgment.
The technical work of managing a project: scope, schedule, budget, risk, quality, procurement, and change — across predictive, agile, and hybrid delivery. The largest single domain on the current exam.
Connecting the project to organizational strategy: compliance, benefits realization, business value, and external change. Small now, but its share roughly triples on the July 2026 exam.
PMI also splits questions across delivery approaches — about half reflect predictive (waterfall) projects and about half reflect agile or hybrid. A strong PMP candidate can read a scenario, identify which approach is in play, and pick the action a servant-leader project manager would actually take.
Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day
You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government-issued photo ID, store your belongings, and watch the room on camera. You're given an erasable noteboard, and centers are available in most major cities worldwide.
You take the exam from a private room at home through OnVUE, Pearson VUE's remote platform, with appointments available 24/7. A live proctor monitors you the whole time. You'll run a system test, complete an ID check, and do a 360° room scan before the exam unlocks.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your PMI account exactly. The proctor captures your photo and ID before the exam begins.
A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. No notes, food, or other people are allowed during the OnVUE session.
Stay in frame and on-camera throughout. Two optional 10-minute breaks are built in. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing your connection can flag the session for review.
