CRSP & CRST · BCRSP
The CRSP is Canada's most recognized occupational health and safety credential, awarded by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP). Across mining, construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, and provincial public-sector employers, CRSP after your name is increasingly written straight into job postings and procurement requirements — and many federal and provincial safety roles will not shortlist a candidate without it. The technician-level CRST is the same Board's entry rung. Both gate the same exam engine. This page breaks down exactly how the CRSP and CRST examinations are built, how the modified-Angoff pass mark works, and how to get through them the first time.

How the BCRSP examinations are built — at a glance
190–210
Both the CRSP and CRST forms carry 190 to 210 items. Each is mapped to one of six competency domains and to a cognitive level — knowledge/comprehension, application, or critical thinking.
2 types
Most items are independent stand-alone questions; the rest are case-based — three or more questions tied to a single workplace scenario that you must read, interpret, and reason through.
No break
As of January 1, 2025 the CRSP runs 4 hours and the CRST 3.5 hours, each with no scheduled break. Stamina and pacing matter as much as content knowledge.
With around 200 questions in 4 hours (CRSP), you have roughly 70 seconds per item — and the case-based scenarios eat into that average heavily. Candidates who run out of time usually do so by over-reading the long Canadian-law and management-system stems early on. There is no scheduled break, so you manage your own energy across the whole sitting.
There is no fixed percentage to hit. The BCRSP uses the modified-Angoff method: a panel of Canadian content experts judges how a minimally qualified safety professional should perform on each item, and that determines the cut score for that specific form. Because difficulty varies between forms, the required mark shifts slightly each administration — and your report simply reads pass or fail, not a number.
Six CRSP competency domains — bars show approximate midpoint weighting on the 2025 blueprint
The largest domain. Building, implementing, auditing, and continually improving an OHS management system — policy, planning, performance measurement, incident investigation, and standards such as CSA Z1000 / ISO 45001.
Recognizing chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards and assessing their risk — exposure assessment, qualitative and quantitative methods, and prioritization.
Applying the hierarchy of controls — elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, and PPE — plus emergency preparedness, fire protection, and verifying that controls actually reduce risk.
Leadership, safety culture, change management, training and competency, financial and project management of the safety function, and influencing behaviour across an organization.
Canadian OHS legislation across federal and provincial jurisdictions, due diligence, the internal responsibility system, the BCRSP Code of Ethics, and the safety professional's scope of practice.
The underlying science — toxicology, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, basic statistics, engineering and physical-science principles, and human-factors knowledge that supports practical decisions.
The CRST blueprint groups the same body of knowledge under technician-oriented domains (such as Hazards Identification, Risk Assessment and Controls; Health and Safety Systems; Legal, Ethical and Professional Practice; and Technical Safety Fundamentals), pitched at a narrower depth than the CRSP. Percentage ranges above are approximate midpoints from the 2025 CRSP blueprint and shift between exam forms — always confirm the current weighting in the official BCRSP blueprint before you plan your study.
Where you sit the BCRSP exam — and what test day involves
This is the default route for both CRSP and CRST. You write the computer-based exam in a quiet, monitored room at an authorized Pearson VUE centre. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and watch the room. Centres are spread across Canadian cities, with international locations for candidates abroad.
Remote proctoring is not automatic. Candidates based more than 400 km from an authorized centre may request an alternative — OnVUE remote proctoring or a client-proctored sitting — subject to availability. OnVUE needs Windows 10 or macOS 14 (or higher), a single display, webcam, microphone and speaker, and at least 6 Mbps down / 2 Mbps up.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name matching your BCRSP application. For OnVUE you check in through the Pearson VUE app, photograph your ID, and take photos of your workspace before a proctor admits you.
A clear, private room, one screen only, no phone or second device, no notes, and a 360° webcam scan. No one else may enter, and you must stay on camera for the whole sitting — there is no scheduled break.
You have 12 months from approval to write. If you do not pass, the BCRSP permits up to two supplementary writings within the following year, each with a fresh examination fee, before you must reapply.
The CRSP gates senior OHS roles across Canada
You must qualify before you can even sit it
Why it's hard: The CRSP is broad rather than deep — one form can swing from CSA management-system clauses to toxicology to provincial law to project finance. Many candidates are mid-career practitioners juggling shift work and family, sitting a 4-hour exam with no break and a moving Angoff pass mark they can't game. The breadth and the multi-jurisdiction Canadian law are exactly the pressure points our help is built to absorb.
The CRSP and CRST are broad, four-hour, no-break exams with a pass mark you can't reverse-engineer — sitting between you and a job posting that demands the letters. Exam Assist pairs you with a vetted safety-credential specialist and works on a pay-after-you-pass model, so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end, and you settle only after the verified result.
