CNL & CNML Nurse Leader Certification

CNL · CNML

Two distinct nurse-leadership credentials sit behind these letters. The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), from AACN's Commission on Nurse Certification, is the master's-level clinical credential for nurses who coordinate care at the bedside. The Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML), from the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, validates the operational skill of charge nurses, unit managers, and directors. Hospitals increasingly tie these credentials to promotion, Magnet recognition, and leadership pay bands — the CNL is scheduled through Prometric and the CNML through PSI, so a missed sitting can stall a job offer or a unit-director appointment. This page breaks down each exam honestly and how to get it done right.

CNL vs CNML

Two nurse-leadership credentials, two different career tracks — pick the right exam first

CNL — Clinical Nurse Leader CNML — Certified Nurse Manager & Leader
Sponsor AACN — Commission on Nurse Certification AONL — American Organization for Nursing Leadership
Focus Point-of-care clinical leadership & outcomes Unit/department operational management
Questions 140 (130 scored, 10 pretest) 115 (100 scored, 15 pretest)
Time limit 3 hours 2 hours
Passing Scaled 350 of 150–500 75 of 100 scored items correct
Core eligibility RN + CNL master's / post-master's program RN + BSN/higher + nurse-leadership hours
Validity 5 years (50 CE hours to renew) 3 years
Fee ~$425 $300 member / $450 non-member

The two are not interchangeable. The CNL is a clinical role designation tied to a graduate CNL curriculum, while the CNML is built for nurses already managing budgets, staffing, and unit performance. Confirm which one your employer or job posting actually requires before you register — switching after the fact means a new application and a new fee.

WHAT THE CNL TESTS

Three weighted domains from AACN's CNL exam content outline — bars show each domain's share of scored items

1

Care Environment Management

45%

The largest domain: team coordination, quality and risk improvement, knowledge management, and interprofessional communication across the microsystem.

2

Nursing Leadership

32%

Patient assessment, lateral integration of care, horizontal leadership, implementation of the CNL role, and healthcare advocacy.

3

Clinical Outcomes Management

23%

Health promotion and disease/risk management, illness and disease management, and applying healthcare policy to patient outcomes.

Because Care Environment Management carries nearly half the scored items, candidates who over-prepare clinical content and under-prepare quality improvement, microsystem analysis, and interprofessional coordination tend to come up short. The CNML, by contrast, splits its blueprint across five competency areas listed below.

CNML competency areas

Communication & Relationship Building

Influence, conflict, and team relationships.

Health Care Environment & Clinical Principles

Quality, safety, and the practice environment.

Leadership

Personal and systems leadership behaviors.

Professionalism

Ethics, advocacy, and career development.

Business Skills & Principles

Financial, HR, performance, and strategic management.

AONL does not publish fixed percentage weights for the five CNML areas, but Business Skills & Principles — budgets, staffing models, productivity, and strategic planning — is consistently the area working clinicians find most unfamiliar.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

The CNL runs through Prometric and the CNML through PSI — here's how each is delivered and what to expect on test day

CNL — Prometric test center only

The CNL is administered at Prometric testing centers only — there is no online at-home option, so it must be sat in person. Centers are available across the US and internationally. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and monitor the room throughout your appointment. You schedule the date and location through Prometric once your CNC application is approved, within set testing windows.

CNML — PSI center or online

The CNML is delivered through PSI, either at a PSI test center or online from a private room at home via remote proctoring. For the online option you download PSI's secure lockdown browser, which blocks other applications, screen sharing or recording, copy/paste, and dual or extended monitors. A live proctor watches via webcam for the full session.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with your name matching your certification application exactly. The proctor captures a photo before the exam unlocks.

Environment & system scan

For the CNML online option: a clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. Your machine must pass PSI's system check before launch. Center sittings store your belongings instead.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera throughout. Leaving the seat, talking aloud, opening another app, or losing connection can flag or void the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

These credentials gate nurse-leadership roles

  • CNL: graduates of a CNL master's or post-master's program
  • CNML: charge nurses, unit managers, and nurse directors
  • Nurses pursuing promotion or a leadership pay band
  • Staff at Magnet-designated or Magnet-aspiring hospitals
  • Experienced RNs moving from bedside care into management

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

Eligibility is strict — and the content stretches clinicians

  • Current, unrestricted RN license required for both
  • CNL: completion of an accredited CNL graduate program
  • CNML: BSN or higher + qualifying nurse-leadership hours
  • Comfort with quality improvement, finance, and systems thinking

Difficulty: Both exams shift the lens away from hands-on patient care toward systems, finance, and quality. Strong clinicians routinely stumble on microsystem analysis, budget and productivity questions, and policy framing — content their unit work never drilled. The CNL's scaled 350 cut and the CNML's 75-of-100 bar leave little margin, which is exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the CNL and CNML exams

What is the difference between the CNL and the CNML exam? +
The CNL (Clinical Nurse Leader), administered by AACN's Commission on Nurse Certification, is a master's-level clinical credential focused on patient-care coordination at the point of care. The CNML (Certified Nurse Manager and Leader), administered by AONL, is an operational management credential for charge nurses, unit managers, and directors. The CNL exam has 140 questions over 3 hours and requires a CNL master's program; the CNML has 115 questions over 2 hours and requires a BSN plus nurse-manager experience.
How is the CNL certification exam scored and what score do I need to pass? +
The CNL exam uses a scaled score from 150 to 500, and you need a 350 or higher to pass. Your raw number of correct answers is converted to that scale, so the exact number of items you must answer correctly varies by form. The CNML uses a different model: you must answer 75 of its 100 scored items correctly to pass.
Can I take the CNL or CNML exam online from home? +
It depends on the credential. The CNL is administered by AACN's Commission on Nurse Certification through Prometric test centers only — there is no online at-home option, so you must sit it in person. The CNML is delivered through PSI and can be taken either at a PSI test center or online from a private room at home via PSI's remote proctoring. The PSI online option requires a webcam room scan, a government ID check, and a secure lockdown browser that blocks other applications, screen sharing, copy/paste, and dual monitors.
What are the eligibility requirements for the CNL and CNML exams? +
For the CNL, you must hold a current RN license and be in your final term of, or a graduate of, a CNL master's or post-master's program accredited by a recognized nursing body. For the CNML, you need an unrestricted RN license, a baccalaureate degree or higher, and qualifying nurse-leadership experience — roughly 2,080 hours as a nurse manager or 4,160 hours in a leadership support role.
How long are the CNL and CNML certifications valid? +
The CNL credential is valid for five years and renews with 50 continuing-education hours over the cycle. The CNML credential is valid for three years and is renewed through continuing education or re-examination. Both can be retaken if not passed, with waiting periods between attempts.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I pass the CNL or CNML? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
