ASWB Social Work Licensing Exam

Bachelors · Masters · Advanced Generalist · Clinical (LCSW)

The ASWB exam is the single licensing exam standing between a social work degree and the right to practice. Every U.S. state and most Canadian jurisdictions use ASWB's exams to license social workers, so without a passing result you cannot call yourself an LBSW, LMSW, or LCSW — and you cannot bill, supervise, or hold a caseload of your own. This page breaks down the five exam levels, the August 2026 format change, how Pearson VUE and OnVUE delivery works, and how to pass on the date your board gave you.

EXAM LEVELS

ASWB administers one exam in five category levels — your board decides which you sit

Category Typical Credential Who Sits It Fee
Associate LSWA (a few states) Candidates without a social work degree where a state offers an associate license $230
Bachelors LBSW / LSW BSW graduates entering generalist, non-clinical practice $230
Masters LMSW / LSW MSW graduates licensing for early, non-clinical professional practice $230
Advanced Generalist LISW / LMSW-AG Post-MSW candidates in macro, administrative, or generalist roles with supervised hours $260
Clinical LCSW / LICSW MSW holders who have completed supervised clinical hours and seek independent clinical practice $260

Credential abbreviations vary by state — what one board calls an LMSW another calls an LSW or LGSW. ASWB sets and scores the exam; your individual state or provincial board determines which level you sit, the supervised-hours requirement, and the license title you receive. Always confirm the level on the Authorization to Test your board issues.

EXAM FORMAT

How the ASWB exam is built — and what changes in August 2026

170

Questions (through Aug 2, 2026)

150 scored, four-option multiple-choice questions plus 20 unscored pretest items you cannot tell apart. No penalty for guessing.

4h

Testing Window

A four-hour seat time at a Pearson VUE workstation. Most candidates finish with time to spare, but the volume of vignette-style items makes pacing matter.

122

New Format (on/after Aug 3, 2026)

ASWB's redesigned blueprint drops to 122 questions (110 scored) while keeping the four-hour limit, and moves to three content areas instead of four — with a much heavier ethics weighting.

Vignette-driven, not recall

The ASWB exam is famous for "best answer" questions where two or three options are all defensible and you must pick the most appropriate next step. It tests applied judgment — what a competent social worker does first, in order — rather than memorized definitions. That is why strong students with high GPAs still fail: the exam rewards decision-making under the NASW Code of Ethics, not content recall.

How scoring works

ASWB uses criterion-referenced scaled scoring set by each board, so there is no single published raw cut and no curve against other test-takers. Candidates generally need to answer roughly 90 to 107 of the 150 scored questions correctly depending on level and form. You receive only a pass or fail — ASWB does not give you a numeric score if you pass, and a diagnostic breakdown by content area if you do not.

WHAT'S TESTED

The new three-area blueprint for exams taken on or after August 3, 2026 — bars show each area's share of scored questions

1

Values, Ethics & Professional Practice

36%

Now the single largest area, nearly doubled from the old blueprint. Confidentiality, informed consent, dual relationships, mandated reporting, professional boundaries, and ethical decision-making under the NASW Code of Ethics.

2

Human Development, Diversity & Behavior

32%

Human growth across the lifespan, identity and culture, family and group dynamics, abuse and trauma, and behavior in the social environment — the person-in-environment foundation of practice.

3

Assessment, Intervention & Case Management

32%

Direct practice: data gathering, diagnosis and assessment, intervention planning, treatment modalities, evaluation, and coordinating care. On the Clinical exam this area carries the heaviest diagnostic and DSM-related content.

The biggest practical shift in 2026: Values and Ethics jumps from roughly 19% to 36% of scored items, making ethics reasoning the largest single area on every level. Through August 2, 2026 the legacy four-area blueprint still applies — confirm which version governs your scheduled date, because the right study weighting depends entirely on it.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day

At a Pearson VUE test center

The standard path for ASWB. You sit at a workstation in a quiet, monitored Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government-issued ID against the name on your Authorization to Test, store all belongings in a locker, and provide an erasable noteboard — no personal scratch paper, phones, or notes. The room is camera-monitored throughout.

Online via Pearson VUE OnVUE

ASWB opened an OnVUE online-proctoring pilot through Pearson VUE in 2026, but it is not open to all. During the pilot, online delivery is offered to candidates who live 100 miles or more from the nearest center or who are approved for online testing as a nonstandard arrangement. You take it from a private room with a live remote proctor, an ID check, and a 360° room scan before the exam unlocks.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your Authorization to Test exactly. Online, the proctor captures a photo and ID image before unlocking the exam.

Environment rules (OnVUE)

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, no one else in the room, and a webcam scan of the space. Candidates sign confidentiality and security agreements before starting.

Breaks & conduct

Online candidates may not take unscheduled breaks; leaving the camera frame or any security violation can invalidate your results. Stay in view and on-camera the entire session.

WHO NEEDS THIS EXAM

The ASWB exam gates social work licensure in all 50 states

  • BSW graduates seeking a Bachelors-level license (LBSW/LSW)
  • New MSW graduates licensing at the Masters level (LMSW)
  • Clinicians pursuing the LCSW after supervised clinical hours
  • Social workers relocating who must license in a new state
  • Career changers whose jobs are contingent on passing first

WHY IT'S HARD

Eligibility comes from your degree — the exam is the wall

  • A CSWE-accredited degree at the matching level is required to register
  • "Best answer" items: two or three options are all reasonable
  • A 90-day wait after a fail can stall a job offer for months
  • The August 2026 blueprint reweights ethics from 19% to 36%

The real pain point: ASWB exams are notoriously hard not because the content is obscure but because the answer logic is. Many capable candidates — including strong students and experienced practitioners — fail because the exam rewards a specific ordering of professional judgment (safety, ethics, then process) that academic training does not drill. That gap between what you know and how ASWB scores it is exactly what our help is built to close.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about the ASWB social work licensing exam

Which ASWB exam level do I need — Bachelors, Masters, or Clinical? +
It depends on your degree and the license your state board issues. The Bachelors exam is for BSW-level licensure (often LBSW/LSW), the Masters exam is for early MSW-level licensure (LMSW/LSW), the Advanced Generalist exam is for post-MSW macro/generalist practice, and the Clinical exam is required for the LCSW credential after supervised clinical hours. ASWB administers the exam, but each individual state or provincial board sets which level you sit and the experience hours attached to it.
How many questions are on the ASWB exam and how long is it? +
Through August 2, 2026 every ASWB level has 170 multiple-choice questions — 150 scored and 20 unscored pretest items — with a 4-hour testing window. For exams taken on or after August 3, 2026, ASWB moves to a new format of 122 questions with 110 scored, the same 4-hour limit, and three content areas instead of four. Confirm which blueprint applies to your scheduled date.
What is a passing score on the ASWB exam? +
ASWB uses criterion-referenced scaled scoring, so there is no single published raw cut score. The number of correct answers needed is set by the board and varies by level and form, but candidates generally need to answer roughly 90 to 107 of the 150 scored questions correctly depending on the exam. You either pass or fail; ASWB does not release a numeric score to you, only a pass/fail result with a diagnostic breakdown if you fail.
Can I take the ASWB exam online from home with OnVUE? +
ASWB launched an OnVUE online-proctoring pilot through Pearson VUE in 2026, but it is not open to everyone. During the pilot, online delivery is offered to candidates who live 100 miles or more from the nearest Pearson VUE test center or who are approved for online testing as a nonstandard arrangement. Most candidates still test in person at a Pearson VUE center. Check your Authorization to Test for the options available to you.
How long do I have to wait to retake the ASWB exam? +
If you do not pass, you must wait 90 days before retaking the same ASWB exam level, and you re-register and pay the fee again. There is no lifetime cap on attempts, but you can sit the same level no more than once in any 90-day window. Your registration is valid for a one-year testing window once your board declares you eligible.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my ASWB result? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you tell us your level and date, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
