Can you take the APTD or CPTD exam online from home?

Yes - both of them. ATD states that Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD) or Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) candidates can choose to take their exam through remote proctoring, testing from a secure location with a live, online proctor. Pearson VUE's ATD program page confirms the same from the delivery side: exams run in testing centers in the US and worldwide as well as through remote proctoring. The Full ATD Delivery Map

ATD runs exactly two credentials, and both carry the same two-route delivery choice. There is no credential-level split of the kind other certifying bodies run - you will not find one ATD exam that is online-eligible while its sibling is locked to test centers. The choice is yours per sitting, not per credential, and it can be revisited under the cancellation rules covered below. What changes between the two rows is the exam itself, its length and its fee - never the delivery map.

Can You Switch Between Home and Center?

Yes, and later than you might expect. The APTD Certification Handbook states that candidates who have scheduled a test-center appointment may switch to the remote proctoring option - or vice versa - if the cancellation policies are met. So the delivery choice does not have to be final when you book; it has to be final when the cancellation window closes.

The cancellation windows differ by route in a way that should shape your decision. Remote candidates may cancel right up to the appointment time without penalty. In-person candidates who cancel or reschedule inside 72 hours pay a $125 administrative fee to ATD CI - and anyone who fails to appear, on either route, pays the same $125.

What Does the At-Home Route Require?

The at-home sitting runs on Pearson's published OnVUE minimums for ATD: a computer running Windows 10 or macOS 14 or higher, a working webcam, microphone, and speaker with no headphones or headsets, one display screen only, a stable internet connection of at least 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, and the ability to close every application except OnVUE. Virtual machines, VPNs, corporate or public networks, secondary or touchscreen displays, phones, tablets, watches, and smart or AI devices are all prohibited.

Your desk must be completely empty except the computer, pre-approved items, and a beverage in an unmarked container; the room must be private, quiet, and free of distractions; and you must remain alone the whole time - no public spaces like offices, libraries, or coffee shops. Check-in includes technology checks, photos of yourself and your government-issued ID, and a room scan. ATD's remote-proctoring page tells candidates to complete the required system test before exam day, and Pearson warns that failing the minimums on exam day can mean immediate cancellation and forfeiture of the exam fee.

The One Caveat: Regions and Windows

The handbook's caveat is short and worth quoting: Pearson's OnVUE Remote Proctoring is not available in some regions. ATD does not publish the region list in the handbook, so if you are outside the United States, check the OnVUE option inside the scheduling flow before you count on it - a Pearson test center is the published fallback everywhere they run ATD exams.

The second constraint is the calendar, not the map. Both credentials run window-based scheduling: you commit to a testing window at application, the APTD in odd-numbered months and the CPTD in even-numbered months, with applications due at least 30 days before the window opens. The delivery route you pick does not change the window - an at-home CPTD sitting in June obeys the same June-August window as a center sitting.

How Should You Choose Between Home and Center?

The choice is practical. Pick OnVUE at home if you have a compliant Windows or macOS machine on a private network, a quiet room you control for three hours, and no compliant test center within reach. Pick a Pearson test center if you are in a region where OnVUE is unavailable, on a corporate or restricted network, sharing your space, or simply do not want to own the technical checklist.

Either way the exam, fee, and credential are identical - ATD publishes one fee, one passing score, and one credential per exam, and the delivery route changes none of it. The route only changes where you sit and what you must clear to start.
