How much do the ATD certification exams cost?
The APTD exam costs $525 for ATD members and $800 for non-members. The CPTD exam costs $1,099 for members and $1,500 for non-members. What the Exam Fee Actually Buys
The registration fee is a bundle, not just a seat. It covers 18 months of eligibility from the day your application is approved, one testing attempt inside the pre-selected window you committed to at application, the exam score report, and the credential itself - a certificate (and lapel pin) once you pass. Study materials, prep courses, study-group support, and travel to a test center are explicitly not included.
Two forfeiture rules give the fee its teeth. First, the 18-month clock: if you do not test within your eligibility period, all fees are forfeited and you reapply as a new candidate at full price. Second, prepaid credit expires: if you prepay the exam fee, which provides up to 365 days to apply, and let the credit lapse, it is forfeited.
The refund rule is narrow. Fees are nontransferable and nonrefundable; withdrawal before the registration deadline for your window gets a refund minus the review fee, and candidates found ineligible during audit or review get the same minus-$275 (APTD) or minus-$375 (CPTD) treatment.
The Fees That Surprise People
Window transfer is the big one. You commit to a testing window at application, and changing your mind later costs $275 (APTD) or $375 (CPTD) - exactly the same as a retake. With applications due at least 30 days before the window opens and the APTD running only in odd months (CPTD only in even months), a missed deadline is not a small slip; it is a transfer fee or a months-long wait.
The late-cancellation rule has a remote-versus-center split worth knowing. In-person candidates who cancel or reschedule inside 72 hours pay a $125 administrative fee to ATD CI. Remote-proctoring candidates may cancel right up to the appointment time without penalty. But anyone - remote or in-person - who simply fails to appear pays $125, and a remote session revoked over connectivity or hardware issues costs the same $125 to reinstate the authorization to test.
Recertification is the long-tail cost. Both credentials renew on a three-year cycle with documented professional development, and the application itself costs $195 (APTD) or $250 (CPTD). Over a decade-long career that is three or four recertification cycles on top of the original exam fee.
What a Failed Attempt Really Costs
In pure fee terms: a failed APTD attempt costs $275 (the retest fee) and a failed CPTD attempt costs $375. But the published retest policy - wait at least 30 days and until the next exam window - is the more expensive half. Because the APTD only runs in odd-numbered months and the CPTD only in even-numbered months, a fail can push your retake two to three months out, and you sit an alternate exam form when you return.
The arithmetic makes the case for a clean first attempt. A CPTD candidate who fails once and passes on the second try has paid $1,099-$1,500 plus $375, waited out a window cycle, and still faces the same 500-of-800 standard on a different form - all inside an 18-month eligibility clock that does not pause.
