What is the CPTD exam format?
The CPTD is a three-hour, computer-based exam with 150 measurement opportunities in two separately timed sections. Section 1 holds 90 multiple-choice questions in 105 minutes. After an optional 10-minute break, Section 2 holds 10 case management problems - each a short workplace scenario unfolding in 3-4 steps - in 65 minutes. Multiple-choice answers score +1 with no penalty; case management choices score +1 for correct and -1 for incorrect. The passing score is 500 on a 200-800 scale.
How the Three Hours Are Split
The section structure is the first thing to internalize, because the two sections do not share time. Unused minutes in Section 1 do not roll into Section 2, and the break between them is capped at 10 minutes - overrun is deducted from Section 2's clock. Section 1 ends with a review screen where you can revisit flagged questions, but once you exit Section 1 it is gone for good. The practical consequence: pace each block against its own clock, because the exam never lets one section subsidize the other.

Section 1: 90 Multiple-Choice Questions
Section 1 is conventional in format and unforgiving in clock: 90 four-option questions with one correct answer each, 105 minutes - about 70 seconds per question. A correct answer earns +1 point; wrong and blank answers score 0, so there is no reason to leave anything empty. The Help button in the bottom navigation explains the testing system itself, and the Navigator and Review screens handle flagging and revisiting before you commit to the section exit.
The 90 questions carry the Professional Capabilities center of gravity - the published domain weights for the whole exam are Personal Capabilities 20%, Professional Capabilities 45%, and Organizational Capabilities 35%. Preparation guidance, labeled as ours rather than ATD policy: with 45% of the exam's weight, professional-capability content is where practice time pays back most per hour, and 70-second pacing is a trainable skill on four-option items.
Section 2: 10 Case Management Problems
Section 2 is where the CPTD stops behaving like a typical certification exam. Each of the 10 problems presents a short scenario designed to replicate decision-making and professional judgment, revealed in 3-4 steps. At each step you see a list of possible actions and select every action the situation actually requires - no more, no fewer.
The scoring rule is the one to respect: every correct choice earns +1 and every incorrect choice loses 1 point. Selecting an action that is merely optional counts as incorrect. You must select at least one action to advance to the next step, and once you advance you cannot return to change earlier choices. The navigation bar shows which step you are on within the problem, so you always know how much of the scenario remains.
Preparation guidance, again labeled as ours: the minus-marking rule inverts the usual test-taking instinct. On multiple choice, guessing costs nothing; in case management, an unnecessary action costs a point. The trained behavior is disciplined selection - choose exactly what the scenario requires and nothing it merely permits - practiced against the published sample questions in the handbook's Appendix C before you sit.
How the 500-of-800 Pass Standard Works
ATD CI reports CPTD scores on a 200-800 scale with 500 required to pass. It does not publish how many of the 150 measurement opportunities must be answered correctly - multiple exam forms are in use at the same time for security, and forms are equated so the same passing standard applies across all of them. A candidate who must retake is assigned an alternate form.
Results are immediate: on screen at the end of the exam at a test center, or through the certification portal's Results tab for remote-proctoring candidates. Unsuccessful candidates receive domain-level feedback in the score report - the honest map of where the next attempt's preparation should go. A printed certificate follows in the month after passing.
The Window Calendar Around the Format
The format lives inside a scheduling rule worth restating: CPTD exams run only in even-numbered months - February, April, June, August, October, December - in two-month windows with a blackout month between, and applications are due at least 30 days before your window opens. You commit to the window at application.
The retest policy connects the two: after a fail you wait at least 30 days and until the next exam window, pay the $375 retest fee, and sit an alternate form - all inside the 18-month candidacy that starts the day you are approved. The exam format does not change between windows, but the form does.
