What is the Huawei certification structure?
Huawei Career Certification has three levels - Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA), Huawei Certified ICT Professional (HCIP), and Huawei Certified ICT Expert (HCIE) - each available across technology tracks such as Datacom, WLAN, Security, Transmission, Access, 5G, LTE, Computing, Storage, Collaboration, Intelligent Vision, and Digital Power, plus Cloud Platform & Cloud Services and Project Management categories. HCIA and HCIP credentials are earned by passing proctored written exams on Pearson VUE (US$200 and US$300 respectively in the Datacom track, 90 minutes, 600 of 1000 to pass) and are valid three years. HCIE adds a separate lab exam scheduled through Huawei's own portal. Written exams can be sat online from home via OnVUE if you reside outside China mainland.
The Three Levels and What Each Proves
HCIA is the associate rung: Huawei positions it as developing entry-level knowledge and skills in a technology area. The Datacom version - the most-traveled track because it maps to the universal router-and-switch estate - is a single 90-minute written exam at 200 USD with a 600-of-1000 bar and ten published domains weighted toward Ethernet switching (28%) and IP networking (27%). The credential is an e-Cert, arrives within one working day of passing, and is valid three years.
HCIP is the professional rung, and in Datacom it takes a core-plus-elective shape: HCIP-Datacom-Core Technology (H12-821) at 300 USD plus an elective such as HCIP-Datacom-Advanced Routing & Switching (H12-831) at 180 USD, each 90 minutes with the same 600-of-1000 bar. HCIE is the expert rung and the only one with a two-part gauntlet: the written exam on Pearson VUE plus a lab exam scheduled through Huawei's own portal. HCIE fees are not published in the outline family - budget them at scheduling, not from third-party numbers.
One structure note that saves money: Huawei's renewal model makes climbing the ladder double as maintenance. Passing any same-or-higher-level exam within your validity period extends it, so an HCIA holder who passes an HCIP exam in year three renews the associate credential and earns the professional one with a single fee. Leaving renewal to a same-level resit pays the same fee for no forward progress.

Huawei's portal groups its tracks under ICT Infrastructure - Datacom, WLAN, Security, Transmission, Access, 5G, LTE, Computing, Storage, Collaboration, Intelligent Vision, MDC, Digital Power - and separately under Cloud Platform & Cloud Services and Project Management. Datacom is the flagship: it replaced the older Routing & Switching certification and is the track where the associate-to-expert ladder is most completely published, from the H12-811 outline through the HCIP core-and-elective pair to the HCIE lab.
For most people planning a path, the decision is which track matches the estate they run. If you work on Huawei routers and switches, Datacom is the default. Security, WLAN, and Computing carry their own HCIA and HCIP rungs on the same Pearson VUE written-exam infrastructure with the same delivery rules; the specialist families sit alongside the career tracks with their own exam codes. Where Sittings Happen
Every HCIA and HCIP written exam can be sat at a Pearson test center or, if you reside outside China mainland, online from home via OnVUE - Pearson runs a dedicated live Huawei OnVUE page with the minimums (Windows 10/macOS 14+, webcam/mic/speaker with no headphones, one display, 6/2 Mbps) and the accepted-ID list. Chinese-language sittings are test-center matters: Pearson cancels Chinese-language OnVUE appointments, and China-mainland residents are barred from OnVUE altogether with revoked-score penalties.
The operational rules apply on every route: two valid original ID documents with details matching your Huawei registration exactly (mismatch voids the voucher, no refund), reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours ahead or the fee is forfeited, and the e-Cert lands within one working day of a pass. The HCIE lab is the one component with its own logistics - scheduled through Huawei's portal, not Pearson's.
