What ITIL 4 Foundation Actually Tests
Foundation is vocabulary plus framework. PeopleCert lists the service value system, the four dimensions, the seven guiding principles, the service value chain, the management practices, continual improvement, and service level agreements. The questions are short scenarios. The point goes to the ITIL definition, not the office shorthand.
That precision is the trap. Incident, problem, and change enablement have exact ITIL meanings that differ from help-desk slang. Utility and warranty are not synonyms for 'it works.' Workplace intuition donates points to the distractors.
The paper is small and strict: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, closed book, pass at 65 percent. No notes, no reference PDF. PeopleCert publishes it in 12 languages: English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, and Thai. Its FAQ gives 25 percent extra time when your native language differs from the exam language — 75 minutes for Foundation in English. Extra time does not rescue a language you cannot read at exam speed.
ITIL 4 is not ITIL v3 with new branding. If your notes still treat the old service-lifecycle stages as the spine of the exam, you are studying a retired map.
PeopleCert Online: ID, Room, Languages, and the Check-In That Cancels Sittings
Most ITIL 4 Foundation sittings run online through PeopleCert's live proctor and Web Based Exam Driver. PeopleCert says you can book a slot as little as four hours after purchase. Windows and Mac both work if they meet the current published minimums — confirm those on the guidelines page.
The room rules are specific. One doorway the camera can see. A private room with no transparent walls. You must be alone. Desk and walls clear of notes. No other live screens in view. A webcam you can rotate for a room scan — a phone cannot substitute. Speakers and microphone stay on. Headsets are for onboarding only.
ID is the other common cancel: the same original government-issued photo ID used to book, current, not a photocopy, not an electronic ID, with a recognisable photo, full date of birth, and the name in English (Latin) characters matching the booking. If the ID is not in Latin characters, book a matching proctor language or complete PeopleCert's pre-validation at least 48 hours out.
Run the official compatibility check at least 24 hours before on the same computer, room, network, and camera. One screen only. Repeat it about two hours before. Work laptops often block the driver.

The failures are definition-level. Candidates who studied concepts loosely meet questions that distinguish them precisely. Incident versus problem, service request versus change, utility versus warranty — the exam lives in those seams.
The second failure is overconfidence in the format. Sixty minutes and 40 questions feels trivial, so candidates sit underprepared and discover the 65 percent bar does not forgive loose vocabulary. Fourteen wrong answers is a fail.
The third failure is a v3 brain on a v4 paper. Lifecycle-stage answers miss how ITIL 4 scores the service value system and the guiding principles. The fourth happens before question one: expired ID, a glass-walled office, a second monitor still lit, or a compatibility check skipped until five minutes before the slot.

Reschedule Windows, Retakes, and the Three-Year Renewal
PeopleCert renews ITIL 4 Foundation every three years. The Foundation product page states 60 CPD points for renewal. Another official path is to pass a different ITIL 4 certification in the same product suite before the date — a PRINCE2 sitting does not renew ITIL.

ITIL 4 Foundation Is Not a Junior PMP or a CompTIA Substitute
ITIL 4 Foundation is a service-management vocabulary exam with a published 65 percent bar, no formal prerequisite, and PeopleCert delivery. It answers a job post that names ITIL, not PMP or Security+.
The PMP is a long project exam: 180 questions, about 230 minutes, mixed item types, and no published passing percentage. PMI gates the application with documented experience and education hours. Pearson VUE runs it at a center or via OnVUE. Foundation is not a shorter version of that test.
CompTIA is a family, not one paper. A+, Network+, and Security+ are different codes with different scaled bars on a 100 to 900 scale. A+ is two exams. Several CompTIA sittings include performance-based items, which Foundation does not. Delivery is Pearson VUE. A Foundation pass will not substitute for a named CompTIA code.
This page does not invent pass rates. Foundation's 65 percent is published. PMP's cut score is not. CompTIA publishes scaled bars per code, not a family percentage.
