ITIL-F
ITIL 4 Foundation is the globally recognized entry-level certification in IT service management, owned by AXELOS and delivered by PeopleCert. For many IT operations, service desk, and DevOps roles it's a hiring filter or a promotion requirement — and it's the mandatory gateway to every higher ITIL 4 module. The exam itself is short, but a single failed sitting still costs you the resit fee and can stall an onboarding or contract deadline. This page breaks down exactly what's tested, how it's delivered, and how to get it passed the first time.

How ITIL 4 Foundation is built — at a glance
40
Every question is a single-best-answer item with four options. No negative marking, so always answer all 40 — an informed guess can only help your score.
26
The pass mark is 65%, meaning 26 of 40 correct. You can drop up to 14 questions and still pass — but the questions test precise ITIL definitions, so wording matters.
60
A flat 60 minutes with no reference material allowed. Candidates taking the exam in a non-native language may receive 25% extra time (75 minutes total).
All questions are equally weighted, so there's no benefit in dwelling on a single hard item. At roughly 90 seconds per question you have comfortable time, which makes ITIL 4 Foundation a test of recognition and recall rather than speed. The trap is the deliberately similar distractor answers built around ITIL's precise terminology.
Your result is reported as pass or fail with a percentage shortly after you submit, and the official digital certificate and badge follow once PeopleCert confirms the result. There is no curve and no scaled score — you simply need 26 correct. A fail means re-booking and paying the exam fee again, so passing cleanly on attempt one matters.
Six syllabus areas from the PeopleCert ITIL 4 Foundation syllabus — bars show the approximate share of the 40 questions
By far the largest block (24 of 40 questions) — the purpose and key terms of 15 practices, plus 7 practices explained in detail, including incident, problem, change enablement, service desk, and continual improvement.
The six interconnected activities — plan, improve, engage, design & transition, obtain/build, and deliver & support — that turn demand into value.
The seven guiding principles — focus on value, start where you are, progress iteratively, collaborate, think holistically, keep it simple, and optimize and automate.
Value, value co-creation, service relationships, products and services, utility and warranty, cost, risk, and outcomes — the vocabulary the whole exam relies on.
Organizations and people, information and technology, partners and suppliers, and value streams and processes — the four lenses on every service.
How the SVS components — opportunity and demand, governance, the value chain, practices, principles, and continual improvement — fit together to create value.
The weightings above are approximate and based on the published learning outcomes; PeopleCert does not publish an exact per-area question count. In practice the "practices" area is by far the largest, so candidates who only memorize the guiding principles and four dimensions tend to fall short. Knowing precise definitions — not just the gist — is what separates a 60% from a 70%.
Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day
The most common route: you sit the exam from a private room using the PeopleCert web-based exam driver, monitored by a live online proctor with webcam and screen sharing. You install the secure browser, complete a system check, verify your ID, and do a 360° room scan before the exam unlocks. Slots can be booked around the clock.
Many candidates take ITIL 4 Foundation as the paper-based or in-house digital exam at the end of an accredited course run by a PeopleCert ATO. Staff invigilate the session and verify your ID. Bundled with training, the exam voucher is often included in the course price rather than billed separately.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your PeopleCert profile exactly. The proctor captures a photo and verifies you before the exam unlocks.
A clear desk, no notes or second screen, no phone within reach, and a 360° webcam scan of the room. It's closed book — no reference material of any kind is permitted.
Stay in frame and on-camera the whole 60 minutes with no breaks. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing connection can flag or void the session.
ITIL 4 Foundation suits anyone working in or around IT service delivery
Open to everyone — but the terminology is exacting
Difficulty: ITIL 4 Foundation is conceptually approachable — there's no math and no scenario analysis — but it's a memorization-heavy exam. The framework introduces 34 management practices, 7 guiding principles, 4 dimensions, and a web of overlapping definitions, and the answer choices are deliberately close. Most candidates invest 12–20 hours of focused study, and that recall load under exam conditions is exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.
