SAFe Agilist

SA (6.0)

The SAFe Agilist (SA) certification is the foundational credential for leaders driving a Scaled Agile Framework transformation across teams, Agile Release Trains, and portfolios. The exam unlocks only after you complete an official Leading SAFe course, and a passing result is what many employers and clients require before they put you on an enterprise-agile initiative. Miss the 80% bar and you stall a rollout — and often a promotion. This page breaks down exactly what the exam covers, how it's delivered, and how to clear it the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the SAFe Agilist exam is built — at a glance

45

Questions

All multiple-choice, single-select. There is no essay, lab, or scenario simulation — every item is a knowledge or judgment question drawn from the Leading SAFe courseware.

90

Minutes

That's about 2 minutes per question — comfortable if you know the framework, tight if you're second-guessing terminology. The clock runs continuously once you begin.

36

Correct to Pass

You must answer at least 36 of 45 questions correctly to clear the 80% pass mark. The result is reported immediately as pass or fail — there is no scaled or percentile score.

Closed book & access window

The exam is closed book — no notes, no outside assistance, and no course material on screen. Your first two attempts are included with course registration and should be taken within 60 days of completing the Leading SAFe class, the access window tied to your Community Platform account.

Attempts & retakes

Two attempts are included — your first plus one free retake you can take right away. After that, each additional attempt of the standard unproctored exam costs $50 USD (a proctored option runs higher, around $450). A waiting period applies to later retakes — 10 days before the second retake and 30 days before each subsequent one — and all attempts must fall inside your 60-day access window.

WHAT'S TESTED

Core knowledge areas from the Leading SAFe courseware

1

Lean-Agile Principles & the SAFe Mindset

The ten SAFe Lean-Agile principles, the Agile Manifesto, the House of Lean, and the core values that anchor a SAFe transformation. Expect questions that ask you to map a real situation back to the right principle.

2

The Agile Release Train (ART)

How a long-lived team of Agile teams aligns to a shared mission, the roles on the train (RTE, Product Management, System Architect), and how value flows through the ART each Program Increment.

3

PI Planning & Program Execution

The cadence and structure of PI Planning, building PI objectives and the program board, ART sync events, and how teams manage dependencies, risks (ROAM), and the Innovation & Planning iteration.

4

Lean-Agile Leadership & Business Agility

Leading the change as a Lean-Agile leader, building a Continuous Learning Culture, the seven core competencies of Business Agility, and applying SAFe across the portfolio with Lean budgets and value streams.

Scaled Agile does not publish fixed percentage weights per domain, so we show the knowledge areas as clean cards rather than weight bars. The questions span the full Leading SAFe curriculum, with a strong emphasis on principles, the ART, and PI Planning — the parts of the framework you're expected to lead in practice.

DELIVERY & ACCESS

How and where you sit the SAFe Agilist exam

Online via the SAFe Community Platform

There is no test center and no Pearson VUE or Kryterion appointment. After your Leading SAFe course, the exam appears in your Scaled Agile Community Platform account. You launch it in a web browser, on your own schedule, from wherever you are — the standard exam is taken unproctored.

Course completion is the gate

You cannot register for the exam directly — completing an official Leading SAFe (or Leading SAFe for Government) class is mandatory and is what unlocks the exam. Your first two attempts are included in the course fee, and you typically have 60 days from class completion to take them.

Before you start

Log in to the Community Platform, make sure your course is marked complete, and use a stable browser and connection. The standard exam has no webcam check or room scan.

During the exam

The 90-minute timer runs continuously. You can flag and revisit questions, but it's closed book — no course content, notes, or outside help is permitted under SAFe's exam policy.

After you pass

You receive a SAFe Agilist digital badge and a PDF certificate, plus a one-year membership to the SAFe Community Platform. Renewal is annual through your account.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

SAFe Agilist is built for those leading the transformation

  • Executives, managers, and change leaders driving a SAFe rollout
  • Scrum Masters, RTEs, and Agile coaches scaling beyond one team
  • Product and program managers working across Agile Release Trains
  • PMO leads and portfolio managers moving to Lean portfolio management
  • Consultants and professionals whose clients or roles require SAFe

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

One hard gate, plus a precise-terminology test

  • Mandatory: attend an official Leading SAFe course
  • Recommended: 5+ years in software, systems, or product
  • Helpful: prior exposure to Scrum or Agile at team level
  • Comfort with SAFe's specific vocabulary and event names

Difficulty: The concepts are intuitive for anyone who has worked in Agile, but the 80% bar is unforgiving — you can only miss 9 of 45. Many candidates trip on precise SAFe terminology, the order of PI Planning events, and which role owns what. That's exactly the kind of high-stakes, detail-heavy pressure our help is designed to remove.
