NASM-CNC
The NASM Certified Nutrition Coach (CNC) is the National Academy of Sports Medicine's flagship nutrition credential — the qualification trainers add when clients start asking what to eat, not just how to lift. It is the most-searched "add-on" to the NASM-CPT and signals to gyms, online-coaching platforms, and clients that you can build evidence-based meal and behavior-change plans within a defined scope of practice. The final exam is open-book and self-paced, but the 24-chapter curriculum is dense, the 70% bar trips up rushed candidates, and a third failed attempt triggers a paid retake. This page breaks down exactly what the CNC tests, how it's delivered, and how to get it done right.

How the NASM CNC final exam is built — at a glance
100
A single 100-question final exam pulled from the full 24-chapter curriculum. No essays, no case simulations — every item is multiple choice.
90
You get 90 minutes — a little under a minute per question. Open-book does not mean unlimited time, and looking up every answer is the classic way candidates run the clock out.
70%
Score 70% or higher — roughly 70 of 100 — and you pass. It is straight pass/fail; there is no percentile or scaled score on the CNC.
The CNC is the final assessment for a self-paced online course, so there is no scheduled test date or proctor. You launch the exam inside your NASM EDGE / online account when you feel ready, with your digital textbook available. That freedom is a trap for under-prepared candidates — without a recall foundation, 90 minutes vanishes fast.
Your program bundles three exam attempts. Burn through all three without hitting 70% and NASM charges a retake fee of about $199 to reopen the test. Because it is course-linked rather than a board-licensing exam, there is no enforced multi-day waiting period between attempts — but each fail still costs you momentum.
Three NASM-defined modules — bars show each module's share of the 24-chapter curriculum
The macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats), alcohol, micronutrients, hydration, energy balance and metabolism, nutrient timing, and supplements. The heaviest, most fact-dense block of the exam.
Psychology of weight control, coaching and communication, motivational interviewing, and goal setting — the soft-skill chapters trainers often underestimate but that carry real exam weight.
Scope of practice, dietary assessment and body-composition testing, reading food/supplement labels and portion sizes, navigating fad diets, managing weight-loss plateaus, and putting a full client program together.
The shares above are approximate, reflecting how the 24 chapters distribute across NASM's three published modules; NASM does not publish a fixed per-question blueprint for the CNC. The scope-of-practice material matters disproportionately — questions on what a non-dietitian coach legally can and cannot prescribe are a known stumbling block.
The chapters your 100 exam questions are drawn from, grouped by NASM module
| Module | Representative chapters |
|---|---|
| Nutrition Science | Evidence-based nutrition · energy balance & metabolism · protein · carbohydrates · fats · alcohol · micronutrients · hydration · nutrient timing · supplements |
| Behavior Change | Psychology of weight control & behavior change · coaching and communication · motivational interviewing · goal setting |
| Nutrition Coaching | Scope of practice · dietary assessment & body composition · food/supplement labels & portion size · navigating diets · managing plateaus & maintenance · programming (putting it all together) |
The full curriculum spans 24 digital chapters plus practice exams. Most candidates report 8–12 weeks of part-time study to work through it comfortably before sitting the final.
How you sit the CNC — and what's different from NASM's proctored exams
NASM states plainly that the online CNC final exam is open book and un-proctored. You take it from home through your NASM online account — no webcam scan, no PSI proctor, no test center booking. You have 90 minutes and your digital textbook on hand.
NASM's NCCA-accredited Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exam is PSI-proctored — online via PSI's secure browser or at a PSI test center. The CNC is a different, course-based credential without that proctoring layer. If you also need the CPT, that's a separate, stricter exam.
You launch the final whenever you feel ready inside your account. There's no appointment to schedule and no ID check before it unlocks.
Open-book lulls people into looking everything up. With under a minute per question, you must already know most answers cold and reserve lookups for the few you're unsure of.
Self-study CNC programs come with an access period (commonly up to a year). Plan to sit and pass the final well inside that window before access lapses.
The CNC is built for coaches who guide clients on food
Few barriers to enroll — but the content is denser than it looks
Difficulty: "Open book" lulls people into skipping study, then the 90-minute clock and the volume of metabolism, micronutrient, and scope-of-practice detail catch them out. The honest pain points are time management and the sheer breadth of recall — exactly what our help is designed to handle.
The CNC is open-book and self-paced, which is exactly why people stall — there's no test date forcing them to be ready, and the 70% bar across 100 dense questions punishes "I'll look it up." Exam Assist pairs you with a vetted nutrition-content specialist and works on a pay-after-you-pass model, so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end, and you settle only after the verified result.

Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end. You're matched with a specialist who maps the work around the three modules — Nutrition Science, Behavior Change, Coaching — and the scope-of-practice traps, discreetly and confidentially.
