ITIL 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy

ITIL 4 DITS

DITS is the capstone module for senior IT and digital leaders — the one that, alongside ITIL 4 Strategist DPI, earns the prestigious ITIL 4 Strategic Leader designation. It is also among the most demanding ITIL 4 exams: a closed-book, 70%-to-pass proctored test sitting on top of four assessed case-study assignments. For CIOs, IT directors, and strategy consultants, this credential signals you can connect digital disruption to board-level strategy — and a failed attempt means another voucher, another training cycle, and a delayed promotion or client engagement. This page breaks down exactly what's required and how to get it done right the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the ITIL 4 Leader DITS certification is built — at a glance

30

Multiple-choice questions

A single proctored paper of 30 questions, each with four options and exactly one correct answer. No negative marking — leave nothing blank.

21/30

The pass line

70% is the fixed PeopleCert pass mark — 21 correct answers. The bar is the same for every candidate, with no scaling or curve.

4

Case-study assignments

Completed during accredited training and assessed at 75% or higher. They must be passed for the certification to be awarded alongside the exam.

Timing & closed-book rules

You have 60 minutes for the 30 questions, extended to 75 minutes if English is not your first language and you apply in advance. Unlike some ITIL 4 Managing Professional modules, the DITS exam is closed book — the Digital and IT Strategy publication is not available during the test, so the concepts must be held in memory.

Two parts, one certification

DITS is unusual because the certificate depends on two separate results: the four assessed case-study assignments (75% to pass) and the closed-book multiple-choice exam (70% to pass). PeopleCert will not release your exam result without proof you completed accredited training or official eLearning, so the assignments are a hard gate, not optional coursework.

WHAT'S TESTED

The themes running through the DITS syllabus and case studies

1

Digital strategy & disruption

Defining digital, IT, and business strategy and how they relate; using a digital strategy to respond to disruption and become a digitally enabled or digital-native organization.

2

Digital leadership & vision

The leadership, vision, and culture needed to drive digital strategy, including building digital capability, embracing agility, and leading change across the organization.

3

Risk, opportunity & positioning

Assessing the strategic environment, identifying and managing digital risk, and positioning for the future through innovation, viability, and the strategic dimensions of an organization.

4

Strategy planning & execution

Building a digital strategy, defining strategic approaches and operating models, and translating strategy into a roadmap, portfolio, and measurable outcomes.

5

Governance & change

Aligning governance with digital strategy, managing organizational and people change, and sustaining a culture of continual learning and improvement.

6

Applied case studies

The four assignments apply the syllabus to a realistic organization — diagnosing its strategic position and proposing a defensible digital strategy, not just recalling definitions.

PeopleCert does not publish fixed percentage weights per topic for DITS, so the cards above reflect the syllabus themes rather than a scored breakdown. The closed-book exam samples across all of them, which is why a balanced understanding beats deep knowledge of one area.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

How you sit the DITS exam — and what to expect on test day

Online via PeopleCert proctoring

DITS is delivered online through PeopleCert's web-based exam driver and live online proctoring. You book a slot, install the secure browser, and take the exam from a private room. A live proctor verifies your identity and watches the session throughout. Vouchers are typically booked through your accredited training provider or PeopleCert directly.

Identity & training proof

Your name on a valid government photo ID must match your PeopleCert profile exactly. Because DITS requires accredited training, PeopleCert holds your exam result until completion of an approved course or official eLearning is confirmed — so make sure your training record is in order before booking the exam.

System check first

Run PeopleCert's compatibility check ahead of time: a working webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and a supported browser. Close all other applications before the proctor connects.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. As a closed-book exam, no reference materials of any kind are permitted.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on camera for the full hour. Leaving the seat, talking aloud, or losing connection can pause or flag the session, so plan an uninterrupted window.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

DITS is built for senior digital and IT decision-makers

  • CIOs, IT directors, and digital transformation leaders
  • IT strategy and management consultants advising on digital
  • ITIL 4 Managing Professionals progressing to Strategic Leader
  • Enterprise architects shaping technology direction
  • Senior managers responsible for IT-enabled business outcomes

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

There are hard entry requirements — this is not a beginner module

  • Hold ITIL 4 Foundation, an ITIL v3 certification, or ITIL 4 Managing Professional
  • Complete accredited DITS training or official eLearning (mandatory)
  • Pass the four case-study assignments at 75% or higher
  • Several years of management experience strongly recommended

Difficulty: DITS is widely regarded as one of the toughest ITIL 4 modules. The closed-book exam rewards applied judgment over rote recall, and the four case-study assignments demand strategic writing on top of it. Most candidates underestimate the assignment load — which is exactly the pressure point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about ITIL 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy

What score do I need to pass the ITIL 4 Leader DITS exam? +
The proctored DITS exam has 30 multiple-choice questions and you need 70% — that is 21 of 30 correct — to pass. There is no negative marking, so every question is worth attempting. The pass mark is fixed by PeopleCert and is the same for every candidate and language.
Is the ITIL 4 Leader DITS exam open book? +
No. The 30-question proctored DITS exam is closed book — you cannot reference the ITIL 4 Digital and IT Strategy publication during the test. This is different from some other ITIL 4 Managing Professional exams, so plan to know the concepts from memory rather than relying on a lookup.
Do I have to complete case-study assignments as well as the exam? +
Yes. The full DITS certification has two parts: four case-study assignments completed during accredited training, plus the closed-book proctored exam. You must score at least 75% on the assignments and 70% on the exam, and PeopleCert will not release your exam result without proof you completed accredited training or eLearning.
What are the prerequisites for ITIL 4 Leader DITS? +
To sit the exam you must hold ITIL 4 Foundation (or an ITIL v3 certification or the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation) and complete an accredited DITS training course or official eLearning. The certification is aimed at senior IT and digital leaders, so several years of management experience is strongly recommended though not formally required.
How does DITS lead to the ITIL 4 Strategic Leader designation? +
ITIL 4 Strategic Leader is awarded once you hold both ITIL 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy (DITS) and ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI). DITS supplies the digital-strategy and disruption side, while DPI covers governance, planning, and continual improvement.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my DITS result? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
