ITIL 4 DITS
DITS is the capstone module for senior IT and digital leaders — the one that, alongside ITIL 4 Strategist DPI, earns the prestigious ITIL 4 Strategic Leader designation. It is also among the most demanding ITIL 4 exams: a closed-book, 70%-to-pass proctored test sitting on top of four assessed case-study assignments. For CIOs, IT directors, and strategy consultants, this credential signals you can connect digital disruption to board-level strategy — and a failed attempt means another voucher, another training cycle, and a delayed promotion or client engagement. This page breaks down exactly what's required and how to get it done right the first time.

How the ITIL 4 Leader DITS certification is built — at a glance
30
A single proctored paper of 30 questions, each with four options and exactly one correct answer. No negative marking — leave nothing blank.
21/30
70% is the fixed PeopleCert pass mark — 21 correct answers. The bar is the same for every candidate, with no scaling or curve.
4
Completed during accredited training and assessed at 75% or higher. They must be passed for the certification to be awarded alongside the exam.
You have 60 minutes for the 30 questions, extended to 75 minutes if English is not your first language and you apply in advance. Unlike some ITIL 4 Managing Professional modules, the DITS exam is closed book — the Digital and IT Strategy publication is not available during the test, so the concepts must be held in memory.
DITS is unusual because the certificate depends on two separate results: the four assessed case-study assignments (75% to pass) and the closed-book multiple-choice exam (70% to pass). PeopleCert will not release your exam result without proof you completed accredited training or official eLearning, so the assignments are a hard gate, not optional coursework.
The themes running through the DITS syllabus and case studies
Defining digital, IT, and business strategy and how they relate; using a digital strategy to respond to disruption and become a digitally enabled or digital-native organization.
The leadership, vision, and culture needed to drive digital strategy, including building digital capability, embracing agility, and leading change across the organization.
Assessing the strategic environment, identifying and managing digital risk, and positioning for the future through innovation, viability, and the strategic dimensions of an organization.
Building a digital strategy, defining strategic approaches and operating models, and translating strategy into a roadmap, portfolio, and measurable outcomes.
Aligning governance with digital strategy, managing organizational and people change, and sustaining a culture of continual learning and improvement.
The four assignments apply the syllabus to a realistic organization — diagnosing its strategic position and proposing a defensible digital strategy, not just recalling definitions.
PeopleCert does not publish fixed percentage weights per topic for DITS, so the cards above reflect the syllabus themes rather than a scored breakdown. The closed-book exam samples across all of them, which is why a balanced understanding beats deep knowledge of one area.
How you sit the DITS exam — and what to expect on test day
DITS is delivered online through PeopleCert's web-based exam driver and live online proctoring. You book a slot, install the secure browser, and take the exam from a private room. A live proctor verifies your identity and watches the session throughout. Vouchers are typically booked through your accredited training provider or PeopleCert directly.
Your name on a valid government photo ID must match your PeopleCert profile exactly. Because DITS requires accredited training, PeopleCert holds your exam result until completion of an approved course or official eLearning is confirmed — so make sure your training record is in order before booking the exam.
Run PeopleCert's compatibility check ahead of time: a working webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and a supported browser. Close all other applications before the proctor connects.
A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. As a closed-book exam, no reference materials of any kind are permitted.
Stay in frame and on camera for the full hour. Leaving the seat, talking aloud, or losing connection can pause or flag the session, so plan an uninterrupted window.
DITS is built for senior digital and IT decision-makers
There are hard entry requirements — this is not a beginner module
Difficulty: DITS is widely regarded as one of the toughest ITIL 4 modules. The closed-book exam rewards applied judgment over rote recall, and the four case-study assignments demand strategic writing on top of it. Most candidates underestimate the assignment load — which is exactly the pressure point our help is designed to remove.
