HPAT-Ireland · ISAT
HPAT-Ireland and ISAT are ACER's aptitude tests that gate entry to medicine and allied health. HPAT-Ireland decides EU undergraduate medicine places at Irish universities through the CAO, where your score is added to Leaving Certificate points — and it runs only once a year, so a weak February result costs you a full admissions cycle. ISAT is the equivalent hurdle for international applicants to medicine, dentistry, veterinary, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy programs in Australia, Ireland, and Europe. This page breaks down both tests — what they measure, how they're proctored, and how to get them done right.

How HPAT-Ireland is built — three sections, weighted unevenly
42
42 questions in 60 minutes. Deductive and numerical reasoning over text, tables, and diagrams — no curriculum knowledge required, but heavy on speed and accuracy.
42
42 questions in 50 minutes assessing interpersonal understanding — reading the emotions, intentions, and perspectives in short scenarios. The section many find hardest to "study" for.
30
30 questions in 40 minutes: pattern, sequence, and spatial reasoning using shapes and figures. Weighted at half the value of the other two sections in the overall score.
The three HPAT-Ireland sections total roughly 2 hours 30 minutes of test time. The overall score out of 300 is weighted: Section 1 and Section 2 count double, Section 3 counts single — formula [(2×S1 + 2×S2 + 1×S3) ÷ 5] × 3. A weak Understanding People score therefore hurts twice as much as a weak Non-Verbal Reasoning score.
There is no pass mark on either test. You receive section scores plus an overall percentile that ranks you against everyone who sat in the same year. For Irish EU medicine, HPAT is added to your Leaving Certificate points; for ISAT, universities set their own cut-offs. ISAT reports separate Critical Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores plus percentiles.
HPAT-Ireland's three sections — bars show each section's share of the weighted overall score
Deductive logic, sequence, and numerical problem-solving drawn from short stimuli. Double-weighted, so it carries the heaviest pull on your overall score.
Interpersonal and emotional reasoning — interpreting how people in a scenario feel and why. Also double-weighted, and the part candidates report is hardest to predict.
Abstract pattern, sequence, and spatial reasoning with shapes and figures. Single-weighted — worth half of each of the first two sections.
ISAT covers different ground: two reasoning areas — Critical Reasoning (humanities and social-science material) and Quantitative Reasoning (mathematics and science material) — interleaved across 100 questions. Neither test rewards memorised facts; both reward fast, accurate reasoning under a hard clock.

Both tests are sat online — here's what test day actually looks like
Both HPAT-Ireland and ISAT are delivered as remote computer-based tests through ProctorU. You sit at your own computer in a private room and a live proctor monitors you by webcam, microphone, and screen-share for the entire session. For HPAT-Ireland you should arrive about 30 minutes early to allow for ID verification and pre-test checks.
Before the exam unlocks you complete a system test, a 360° room scan, and a desk check. You'll need a working webcam and microphone, a stable connection, and a quiet space with no second monitor, phone, or notes in reach. Connection drops or a person entering the room can interrupt or void the session, so a clean setup matters.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID with your name matching your ACER registration exactly. The proctor captures your face and ID before the test begins.
A clear desk, no second screen, no phone within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter while you test, and you must stay in frame.
Stay on-camera throughout, work within each section's clock, and avoid talking aloud or looking off-screen. Losing connection can flag or pause the session.
Both tests gate entry to medical-track programs
No syllabus to revise — but the bar is brutally competitive
Difficulty: Because there is no content to memorise, many candidates underestimate these tests — then run out of time on dense Logical Reasoning items or second-guess every Understanding People answer. For Irish medicine, most successful applicants sit around the 80th percentile or higher, and HPAT runs only once a year, so there is no quick retake. That single-shot, high-percentile pressure is exactly what our help is built to absorb.
HPAT-Ireland is a once-a-year, single-shot test where a few percentile points decide your CAO medicine offer, and ISAT is a remote-proctored hurdle standing between international applicants and a medical place abroad.
