Four Sections, Eight Reported Scores
The DAT reports eight scores — individual results for each section plus derived composites — and admissions committees read the Academic Average first and the Perceptual Ability score more carefully than candidates expect. The exam runs as a structured sequence at a Prometric center: Survey of the Natural Sciences, then the Perceptual Ability Test, then Reading Comprehension and Quantitative Reasoning.
Each section fails differently. Natural Sciences rewards organized breadth across biology, general, and organic chemistry. Perceptual Ability is pure spatial reasoning under time pressure — the section candidates either train systematically or donate. Reading Comprehension is a marathon of dense scientific passages. Quantitative Reasoning punishes rusty fundamentals more than missing advanced knowledge.

Prometric Only: The Strictest Check-In on This Site
The DAT runs at Prometric test centers only — there is no at-home or remote DAT, and the 2026 Candidate Guide describes test-center delivery exclusively. Check-in requires two original physical IDs with an exact name match, which is stricter than most exams on this site.
Retake rules add calendar pressure: a 60-day wait between attempts, a maximum of four attempts per 12 months, and after three attempts a written application is required to test again. Combined with the 3-to-4-week score window, a retake is roughly a three-month event — which is why the first sitting should be the prepared one.
Score validity is set by each dental school, not the ADA — recency requirements vary by program, so a very old score may not serve every school on your list. And for candidates eyeing Canadian schools: acceptance of the ADA DAT varies, with the CDA historically running a separate Canadian DAT. Verify each school's policy before assuming.
