CDL
The Cloud Digital Leader (CDL) is Google Cloud's entry-level certification — proof that you can speak the language of cloud and connect Google Cloud products to real business outcomes. It is often the first line on a cloud résumé, a checkbox on partner and consulting requirements, and the credential many teams expect before deeper GCP training. It looks easy on paper, but the questions reward business judgment and precise product knowledge rather than memorized definitions, and a fail still costs you the full $99 plus a retake wait. This page breaks down exactly what the exam covers, how it's delivered, and how to pass it the first time.

How the Cloud Digital Leader exam is built — at a glance
90
A single 90-minute session with no scheduled break. There are no labs and no hands-on console tasks — every item is a written multiple-choice or multiple-select question.
50–60
Roughly 50 to 60 questions, most single-answer multiple choice with a handful of "select all that apply" items. That's well over a minute per question, so pacing is rarely the problem — precision is.
P/F
Google reports the result as a simple pass or fail. There is no numeric score, no percentile, and no per-domain breakdown shared with you — you either earn the badge or you don't.
The CDL is intentionally non-technical. It tests whether you understand the value Google Cloud brings to an organization — when to choose managed services, how cloud changes cost and operating models, and which product solves which business problem. You won't write a command, configure a VPC, or read code.
The certification is valid for 3 years. You can renew within the final 180 days by passing a shorter 45-minute, ~20-question renewal exam for $60. If you fail, Google enforces a waiting period before you can sit again — 14 days after a first fail, then 60 days, then a year — so the first attempt genuinely matters.
Six near-equally weighted domains — bars show each domain's approximate share of the exam
Why organizations move to the cloud, the drivers and risks of transformation, and how Google Cloud's approach to infrastructure, partnership, and innovation creates business value.
The value of data, and where managed products like BigQuery, Cloud SQL, Spanner, and Looker fit — turning raw data into decisions without managing the underlying servers.
How businesses innovate with Google Cloud AI — Vertex AI, Gemini, pre-trained APIs, and the difference between predictive and generative use cases in plain business terms.
Modernizing infrastructure and applications: compute options from VMs to Cloud Run and GKE, hybrid and multicloud strategy, and when to migrate versus rebuild.
The shared responsibility model, identity and access, data protection, and compliance — how Google Cloud's security posture supports regulated and global organizations.
Sustaining cloud success: financial governance and cost management, resource hierarchy and billing, observability, and the operational practices that keep cloud spend and reliability in check.
The six domains are weighted almost evenly, so there is no single area you can safely skip. The trap most candidates fall into is treating the CDL as a vocabulary quiz — the harder questions describe a business scenario and ask which Google Cloud product or approach best fits, which is exactly where precise product knowledge beats rote memorization.
Two ways to sit the exam via Pearson VUE — and what to expect on test day
You take the exam from a private room at home or work, monitored by a Pearson VUE OnVUE proctor through your webcam. Beforehand you run a system check, a 360° room scan, and a government-ID verification. A clear desk and a stable connection are required, and the proctor can pause or revoke the session if rules are broken.
You sit the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center in a quiet, monitored room. Staff verify your ID, store your belongings, and supervise on camera. This route avoids home-connection and room-setup risk and is a good fallback if your space can't meet OnVUE's requirements.
Note on the proctor: Google Cloud certification exams, including the Cloud Digital Leader, are delivered through Pearson VUE. Older study guides and listings that reference Kryterion Webassessor reflect Google's previous vendor and are out of date — you'll register and test through Pearson VUE.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name that exactly matches your registration. The proctor captures a photo before the exam unlocks.
A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and no one else in the room. Online exams require a webcam room scan before you begin.
Stay on camera and in frame for the full 90 minutes. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing connection can flag or end the session.
The CDL is built for people who work around the cloud, not only in it
No requirements — but underestimate it at your peril
Difficulty: CDL is foundational, but it is not a giveaway. The breadth of named products — across data, AI, compute, security, and operations — is wide, and scenario questions punish anyone who only skimmed definitions. Most candidates invest 15–30 hours, and a first-attempt fail still costs the full $99 plus a retake wait. That predictable pressure is exactly what our help is built to remove.
