It keeps the same pre-career, vendor-neutral purpose but rebalances the domains to give more weight to infrastructure and security — the areas that matter most as you move toward A+. If a course still references ITF+, Tech+ is the version you sit today.
Tech+ is the foundation level of CompTIA's stackable certification path. It has no prerequisites and is designed for people with no prior IT experience, mapping you toward the Core certifications — A+, then Network+ and Security+. Unlike those, Tech+ never expires, so once you pass it stays on your résumé for life.

Infrastructure and Security together make up 43% of the exam, so a weak spot in either area is the most common reason candidates fall short of 650. The three 13% domains are lighter individually but combine to 39% of your score — none can be ignored.
Two ways to sit Tech+ — and what to expect on test day
You sit Tech+ in a quiet, monitored room at an authorized Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and provide an erasable noteboard. Your scaled score appears immediately when you submit, and a printed score report confirms the result before you leave.
You take the exam from a private room at home, monitored online through Pearson VUE's OnVUE platform. You'll complete a webcam room scan, an ID check, and a system test beforehand. A stable connection and a clear desk are required, and the proctor watches the session live throughout.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID with your name matching your CompTIA and Pearson VUE profile exactly. The proctor or center staff capture a photo before the exam unlocks.
For OnVUE, a clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a full webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter during the exam, and notes or earbuds are not allowed.
Stay in frame and on-camera the whole time. There are no scheduled breaks in the 60-minute window. Looking off-screen, talking aloud, or losing connection can flag the session for review.
