California Basic Educational Skills Test · 095 / 096 / 097
The CBEST is the basic-skills gate the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (delivered through Pearson) uses to confirm an educator can read, do math, and write at the level the classroom demands. Many California credential programs require it before you can student-teach, and most districts require proof of the basic skills requirement before they put you in front of students. Three subtests stand between you and that clearance — and a single failed subtest can stall an admission offer or a substitute-teaching paycheck. This page breaks down exactly what each subtest covers, how it is scored, and how to clear it without losing a hiring cycle.

How the CBEST is built — three separately-timed subtests you register for individually
50
50 multiple-choice questions covering Comprehension & Research skills and Critical Analysis & Evaluation. You read passages, tables, and graphs and answer five-option (A–E) items.
50
50 multiple-choice questions across Estimation/Measurement, Computation/Problem Solving, and Numerical/Graphic Relationships. Most are word problems, and no calculator is allowed.
2
Two written essays: one analyzing a situation or argument, and one drawing on a remembered personal experience. Each is scored holistically by trained readers.
Each subtest is registered and timed separately: Reading and Writing get 1 hour 30 minutes each, and Mathematics gets 2 hours. There is no shared time bank to shift between them, so you cannot borrow minutes from one subtest for another. You do not have to take all three on the same day — many candidates sit and bank them one at a time.
Each subtest is reported on a scaled score from 20 to 80. You need at least 41 on each subtest and a combined total of 123 to pass overall. Because totals are pooled, a strong subtest can offset a slightly weak one — but no single subtest may fall below 37. Passing subtest scores are banked, so you only re-sit what you have not yet cleared.
The three CBEST components you register and pay for individually
| Subtest | Test code | Content | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 095 | 50 MC · comprehension, research & critical analysis of passages | 41 (20–80) |
| Mathematics | 096 | 50 MC · estimation, computation, numerical & graphic relationships (no calculator) | 41 (20–80) |
| Writing | 097 | 2 essays · one expository/analytical, one expressive/experiential | 41 (20–80) |
Each subtest carries a $30 registration fee and can be taken alone or together. To pass the CBEST you need a scaled score of at least 41 on each subtest and a combined total of 123. Passing subtests are banked indefinitely, so a candidate who passes Reading and Writing but fails Math only re-sits Math.
Three equally-required subtests — bars show each subtest's share of the 123-point total threshold
Pulling main ideas, inferences, and an author's purpose from passages, then evaluating arguments and using tables, indexes, and reference tools — not test-prep trivia, but classroom-grade literacy.
Word-problem arithmetic, estimation, measurement, fractions, percentages, and reading data from graphs — all without a calculator, which is the part candidates underestimate most.
Two on-demand essays graded on focus, organization, support, and mechanics. The expressive prompt trips up strong analytical writers who never practiced personal narrative under a clock.
Because passing depends on a pooled total of 123 with a per-subtest floor, a lopsided profile is the most common trap: many candidates ace Reading and Writing but fall short on the no-calculator Mathematics subtest, forcing a re-sit and another fee. Planning around your weakest subtest is what actually clears the basic skills requirement on the first attempt.
Two ways to sit the CBEST — and what OnVUE check-in actually involves
You sit the computer-based CBEST in a quiet, monitored room at a Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government photo ID, store your belongings in a locker, and watch the room. Scratch paper is provided and collected. The fee is $30 per subtest.
The CBEST is also offered through Pearson VUE's OnVUE remote proctoring. You take it from a private room on your own computer, monitored by a proctor. You run a system test in advance, then complete check-in: photos of yourself, photos of your ID, and a 360° room scan before the exam unlocks.
A valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name that matches your CTC/Pearson registration exactly. OnVUE captures photos of you and the ID at check-in for review.
A cleared desk, no second monitor, no phone in reach, and a 360° webcam sweep of the room. No one else may enter, and you must stay alone for the full session.
Stay on-camera and in frame. No paper notes on OnVUE (an on-screen whiteboard is provided). Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or dropping connection can flag or void the session.
The basic-skills gate for working in California schools
No degree required — but the basics are unforgiving under a clock
Difficulty: The content is high-school level, yet the CBEST stops a real share of test-takers — usually on the no-calculator Math subtest or the timed essays. For candidates who have been out of school for years, or who test in a second language, the pressure of clearing all three separately-timed subtests under OnVUE proctoring is exactly the pain point our help is built to remove.
The CBEST is the one basic-skills gate between you and student-teaching, a sub permit, or a credential start date — and a single failed subtest means another fee and another wait. Exam Assist pairs you with a vetted CBEST specialist and works on a pay-after-you-pass model, so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end, and you settle only after the verified result.
