TOEFL Scores Explained: How the 2026 Scale Works

The complete scoring reference for the 2026 TOEFL iBT: the new 1-6 scale, the CEFR bands behind it, how each section is scored, MyBest scores, the old 0-120 mapping, score release timing, and rescore options.

How Is the TOEFL Scored in 2026?

ETS rebuilt TOEFL scoring on January 21, 2026. The familiar 0-120 total is gone for new test takers, replaced by a scale that runs from 1 to 6 in half-point steps. Each of the four sections receives its own 1-6 score, and the scale is aligned directly to the CEFR, the framework most universities already use to describe language levels. If you last researched the TOEFL before 2026, almost everything you read about scoring is now out of date.

Your overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS gives two worked examples: a section average of 5.125 reports as an overall 5, while 5.25 reports as 5.5. Do not assume a general rounding direction beyond those published examples; the safe planning move is to treat anything sitting near a boundary as capable of going either way and aim clear of the line.

The averaging rule changes how you should think about weaknesses. Under the old scale, a strong Reading score could quietly carry a weak Speaking score inside a 0-120 total. Now every section is visible at half-band resolution, and one section a full band below the others drags the overall average down by a quarter band on its own. Admissions offices see the profile, not just the headline number.

This guide covers the scale itself. For the full story of what changed in the exam - the new task types, the shorter sitting, the reordered sections - read the TOEFL 2026 format guide, and keep the TOEFL iBT exam page bookmarked for structure and timing at a glance.

  • •Scores run 1 to 6 in half-point increments, for each section and overall.
  • •Overall score = the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band (ETS examples: 5.125 reports as 5; 5.25 reports as 5.5).
  • •The scale is aligned to the CEFR, so a TOEFL score now reads directly as a CEFR level.

What Do TOEFL Bands 1 to 6 Mean?

Because the new scale maps one-to-one onto CEFR levels, every TOEFL score now carries a meaning admissions staff can read without a concordance chart. Per ETS, a 6 corresponds to C2, 5 and 5.5 to C1, 4 and 4.5 to B2, 3 and 3.5 to B1, 2 and 2.5 to A2, and 1 and 1.5 to A1. That mapping is the backbone of the whole system, and it is worth memorizing before you set a target.

The bands that matter for most readers of this guide are B2 and C1. B2 describes an independent user who can follow lectures, write coherent academic prose, and hold their own in seminar discussion; it is the CEFR level most commonly associated with university entry. C1 marks an advanced user and is the territory competitive graduate and professional programs tend to occupy. C2 exists on the report, but very few programs require it.

The half bands are where the scale earns its keep. A 4 and a 4.5 are both B2, but they are not the same score, and a program screening at the top of B2 will see the difference. When you set a target, set it in half bands rather than in CEFR levels, and give yourself a half-band buffer above the minimum your recipient lists - the rounding rule means a borderline average is not something to gamble on.

6 - C2 Proficient

The ceiling of the scale: effortless comprehension and precise, flexible production. Almost no program requires it, but it signals near-native command.

5 and 5.5 - C1 Advanced

The competitive band for selective graduate and professional programs. Comfortable with abstract academic material and spontaneous discussion.

4 and 4.5 - B2 Upper Intermediate

The most common university-entry territory. Independent use of academic English, with occasional gaps under time pressure.

3 and 3.5 - B1 Intermediate

Functional everyday English with clear limits in academic settings. Usually below degree-program thresholds, though pathway and foundation programs may accept it.

2 and 2.5 - A2 Elementary

Basic routine communication. Well below academic thresholds - treat a score here as a diagnostic starting point rather than a submission score.

1 and 1.5 - A1 Beginner

The floor of the scale, covering memorized phrases and simple exchanges. A signal to build fundamentals before booking a serious attempt.

How Do New Scores Map to the Old 0-120 Scale?

From January 2026 through January 2028, ETS runs a transition period during which score reports do triple duty: they show your CEFR level, your 1-6 section and overall scores, and a comparable score on the old 0-120 scale. That third number exists so institutions that have not yet updated their published requirements can still place your result against the thresholds they know.

Treat the comparable score as an estimate, because that is what it is. ETS generates it as the midpoint of the 0-120 range that corresponds to your band, not by rescoring your performance against the old rubric. For orientation, ETS's published concordance puts a 6 at roughly 114 and above on the old scale, a 5 at roughly 95 and above, and a 4 at roughly 72 and above - but your report does the mapping for you, and the report's number is the one recipients see.

One more wrinkle: reports for tests taken before January 21, 2026 stay on the old 0-120 scale only, while new-scale reports convert any older scores they display into 1-6 terms. If your attempts straddle the changeover, the two report styles will look different, so say so explicitly when you ask a program which number they want.

During the transition you will meet requirements published in both currencies. If a university still lists a number like TOEFL 90, check whether it has posted a 1-6 equivalent before assuming anything; acceptance of the new scale varies by institution and will keep shifting through 2028. The university-by-university picture is laid out in the TOEFL score requirements guide.

How Each TOEFL Section Is Scored

The 2026 exam runs Reading, then Listening, then Writing, then Speaking - note that Writing now comes before Speaking, a change from the pre-2026 order that many older guides still get wrong. ETS says to allow approximately two hours for the sitting, and because the test adapts to your performance, the exact number of items and minutes you see can vary. Every item count below should be read with an 'about' in front of it.

Each section reports its own 1-6 score, so section strategy is score strategy. The figures below come from the ETS content specification, and they tell you where the pressure lives: Reading and Listening are long, high-volume sections where pacing errors compound, while Speaking packs about 11 tasks into about 8 minutes, which means a single collapsed answer moves the needle more than it would anywhere else on the exam.

Every section also has its own task types and its own failure modes, which is why we maintain dedicated guides for each. Skim the four summaries below, then go deep on whichever section sits lowest in your practice profile. Even balanced candidates should read the Writing and Speaking guides, because the 2026 task types in those two sections are the least like the old exam.

Reading - about 50 items in about 30 minutes

Tasks include Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. Short, fast items reward vocabulary breadth and reading speed over deep analysis. Scored 1-6 like every section.

Listening - about 47 items in about 29 minutes

Listen and Choose a Response, conversations, announcements, and academic talks. Audio plays once, so note-taking discipline shows up directly in the score.

Writing - about 12 tasks in about 23 minutes

Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion. Short, structured tasks where accuracy and register matter more than word count.

Speaking - about 11 tasks in about 8 minutes

Listen and Repeat plus Take an Interview. The shortest section on the clock, so there is no room to warm up - every response counts toward the band.

How Do MyBest Scores Work on the New Scale?

MyBest scores survive the 2026 overhaul. The idea is unchanged: alongside the scores from your most recent test, your report shows your best score in each section drawn from every valid test you have taken in the past two years. Four strong sections spread across two or three attempts can add up to a MyBest profile stronger than any single sitting - which is exactly why retake strategy matters.

The transition adds a conversion rule. If your report is on the new scale and your best Reading score came from a 2025 attempt, that older 0-120 section score is converted to its 1-6 equivalent so the MyBest set reads consistently. Reports issued on the old scale include only prior-scale scores; the two systems do not mix on a single report.

Two cautions before you build a retake plan around MyBest. First, scores expire after two years, so a strong section from an old attempt has a shelf life. Second, not every institution accepts MyBest scores - plenty insist on a single sitting - so confirm the policy with each recipient before deciding that one targeted retake is enough. Retake logistics, including the three-day waiting period between attempts, are covered in the TOEFL registration guide.

What Is a Good TOEFL Score for Your Goal?

Good only means something relative to a goal, so anchor your target to what your recipients actually require rather than to a universal number. In CEFR terms, B2 - a 4 or 4.5 - is the level most commonly associated with undergraduate admission, while selective graduate and professional programs tend to sit in C1 territory at 5 and above. Those are patterns, not promises: requirements differ program by program, and many list section minimums alongside the overall score.

Section minimums deserve more respect than they get. A program that wants an overall 4.5 with no section below 4 has ruled out compensating for a weak Speaking score with strong Reading, and the new scale makes a weak section impossible to hide. When you set your target, set five numbers: the overall band plus a floor for each of the four sections.

During the 2026-2028 transition, many institutions still publish requirements on the old 0-120 scale. Use the comparable score on your report to bridge, but confirm with each admissions office which scale it currently reads - acceptance of the new 1-6 reporting varies by institution and will keep shifting through the window. For concrete numbers by university and program type, work from the TOEFL score requirements guide; and if you are still choosing between tests, the IELTS vs TOEFL comparison covers how the two scales and formats line up.

  • •Undergraduate admission: B2 territory (4-4.5) is the most common baseline, but verify each university's posted requirement.
  • •Selective graduate and professional programs: C1 (5-5.5) is the typical competitive range.
  • •Any goal: check section minimums, the MyBest policy, and which scale - 1-6 or 0-120 - the recipient currently reads.

When Do TOEFL Scores Come Out, and Can You Get a Rescore?

Score turnaround is one of the TOEFL's genuine advantages. Per ETS, scores appear in your ETS account about three days after your test date, the downloadable PDF report follows 24 to 48 hours after that, and any paper copies you ordered go out by mail within 11 to 15 days. Treat those as typical timings rather than guarantees, and never book a test so close to a deadline that a normal three-day wait becomes a crisis.

If a deadline is tight, ETS sells an express scoring option for $129, additional score reports for institutions you add later cost $29 each, and express-shipped paper reports — now available in 75 countries and territories — are usually delivered 2-5 business days after scores confirm or the report is ordered. A score you cancelled can be reinstated for $20. All of these are ETS list prices re-verified on 28 August 2026 that can vary with local taxes, so confirm the final figure at checkout in your ETS account.

Rescores exist for the two human-scored sections. You can request a rescore of Speaking or Writing for $80 per section, or $160 for both. A rescore is worth considering when one of those sections lands sharply below your consistent practice range while everything else matches expectations; it is not a lottery ticket for a sitting that fell short across the board, and the result can come back unchanged.

1

About 3 days after test day

Your section and overall scores appear in your ETS account. Check the CEFR level and the comparable 0-120 score while you are there.

2

24 to 48 hours later

The PDF score report becomes downloadable from your account, ready for application uploads.

3

11 to 15 days

Paper copies, where ordered, arrive by mail to you and your designated recipients.

4

If something looks wrong

Request a Speaking or Writing rescore ($80 per section, $160 for both) through your ETS account, or express scoring ($129) when a deadline cannot wait.

What If Your TOEFL Score Falls Short?

A miss is rarely final. ETS allows unlimited retakes with a three-day waiting period between attempts, so the real constraints are your application deadline, the roughly three-day score wait, and your budget. Before you rebook, diagnose: one weak section is a targeted-prep problem, while an across-the-board shortfall usually means the fundamentals need more time than a quick retake allows.

Use your section scores to route the work. A Speaking band sitting below the rest responds to structured drilling of the Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview tasks - the TOEFL Speaking help guide and the dedicated Speaking support service exist for exactly that profile. If test-day logistics were part of the problem, taking the next attempt as the Home Edition from a controlled room at home is worth weighing; the TOEFL Home Edition guide covers the equipment and room rules.

When the deadline is close and the gap is real, Exam Assist supports TOEFL candidates on pay-after-pass terms: you pay only after you achieve your target score, not upfront for hours of tutoring. Message us on Telegram, WhatsApp, or Discord with your exam date, the overall and section scores you need, and which sections are running weakest, and we will lay out your options confidentially. Exam Assist is independent and is not affiliated with ETS.

Whatever route you take, re-read your recipients' requirements before rebooking: confirm the scale they read, their section minimums, and their MyBest policy. Booking a retake to chase a number nobody is asking for is the most expensive mistake on this page - the scoring system now tells you exactly where the points are, so aim the next attempt at them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the TOEFL scored in 2026? +
Since January 21, 2026, each TOEFL section - Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking - is scored from 1 to 6 in half-point increments, and your overall score is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band. ETS gives two examples: an average of 5.125 reports as 5, while 5.25 reports as 5.5. The scale maps directly onto CEFR levels, from A1 at the bottom to C2 at the top.
What is a good TOEFL score on the new 1-6 scale? +
It depends on the recipient. A 4 to 4.5 (CEFR B2) is the range most commonly associated with undergraduate admission, while selective graduate programs tend to expect 5 or above (C1). Requirements vary by program and often include section minimums, so verify the posted number for each institution and confirm whether they currently read the 1-6 scale or the old 0-120.
How long are TOEFL scores valid? +
TOEFL scores are valid for two years from your test date. MyBest scores are built only from tests still inside that two-year window, so a strong section score from an old attempt expires along with the test it came from. If your scores will lapse before your application deadline, plan a fresh attempt with enough margin for the roughly three-day score wait.
Can you get your TOEFL rescored? +
Yes, for the two human-scored sections. ETS offers a rescore of Speaking or Writing for $80 per section, or $160 for both. A rescore makes sense when one of those sections lands well below your consistent practice level while the rest of the report looks normal. The option covers only Speaking and Writing, and the rescored result is not guaranteed to change.
