What is the CLEP registration process?
Registration happens in two separate steps that candidates routinely merge into one. Step one: register and pay on College Board's website through the My CLEP student portal, and print your registration ticket. Step two: schedule the actual appointment - directly with an independent test center, or through Proctortrack if you chose remote proctoring. Paying College Board does not book your seat.
The exam itself costs $97, and exams run year-round on a flexible schedule rather than fixed national dates. On top of the $97 you pay either the test center's own administration fee - each center sets it and tells you when you call - or the flat $30 remote proctoring fee if you test at home.
One account note that trips people up: College Board updated all student accounts, and if you did not sign in and verify your email before March 23, 2023, you will need to create a new account to reach the My CLEP portal at all.
What are the exact steps in the My CLEP portal?
Start on the CLEP exam topics page and pick your exam - each exam's page shows what it covers, what it costs, and prep resources. If you are deciding between several titles, you can purchase multiple exams in one transaction, though you select one exam subject at a time during the flow.
Click Register and sign in to the My CLEP student portal with your College Board account. Then review your personal information - address and contact details must be correct, and DANTES-eligible military candidates complete the extra funding questions here.
Next comes the order itself: agree to the Terms and Conditions, answer the "About Your Registration" question, enter a voucher code if you are paying with one, and select the exam. You then choose your testing location - a physical test center or remote proctoring - knowing that scheduling happens afterward with the center or Proctortrack, not inside this flow.
Before checkout you can add an optional examination guide, and you can name up to two institutions to receive your score for free. Those free sends only exist during registration and prior to testing; after the exam, transcript sends cost a fee. At checkout, voucher holders pay only for extras like the guide or the remote fee, and DANTES-funded test takers see the price adjusted to $0.00.
Finish by scheduling: test-center candidates use the CLEP Test Center Search tool and call the center directly; remote candidates create a Proctortrack account and schedule there. If your name changes after registering, the fix is the CLEP Name Change Request form, which takes two to three business days to process.
Who can register for a CLEP exam?
At a test center, effectively everyone: high school students, college students, adult learners, military service members and veterans, and professionals seeking continuing education credits. There is no course-enrollment prerequisite - CLEP is open to anyone who wants the credit-by-exam route.
Remote proctoring narrows that. At home you must be 13 or older - 18 or older for Illinois residents - and physically located in the United States excluding U.S. territories, or be DANTES-funded. All 34 CLEP exams are available on the remote route, so the restriction is about who and where, not which exam.
Two program bans apply everywhere. Anyone involved in developing or delivering CLEP preparation - courses, workshops, tutoring - is prohibited from taking a CLEP exam. And after you test, you are barred from CLEP-related instruction, preparation, or administration work for at least one year; violating that earns a permanent ban from all future CLEP testing.
Registering a child under 13 is a paper process, not an online one: College Board does not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13, so a parent or guardian submits the College Board Account Creation Consent form by email and a representative follows up.
What does registering actually cost?
The stack has three layers. Layer one is the $97 exam fee paid to College Board in the portal. Layer two is delivery: either a test center's administration fee - set and disclosed by each center when you call to schedule - or the $30 remote proctoring fee charged in the portal at checkout. Layer three is optional extras like the examination guide.
Refunds are real but time-boxed. CLEP exams and remote proctoring fees are refundable up to seven days from the date of purchase, except for redeemed exams or redeemed remote proctoring sessions. Examination guides are refundable within seven days if you submit a letter of destruction.
Changing your delivery route after registering is possible but not free of friction. Switching between a test center and remote proctoring in My CLEP cancels the original registration and creates a new registration ID; the refund for the original may take seven to ten business days to post back to your card, and the $30 remote proctoring fee applies to the new registration if you are moving to the at-home route.
Military candidates should stop at the DANTES page before paying anything: eligible service members can have the exam funded by DANTES, see $0.00 at checkout, and can use DANTES-funded test centers that waive the administration fee entirely.
How do you schedule after registering?
For the test-center route, open the CLEP Test Center Search tool - searchable by college name or by location - and contact the center directly. Exams are not given on fixed dates; each center arranges appointments any time at its own discretion, which is also when it tells you its administration fee.
Know your center labels before you book. Limited centers test only that institution's own admitted or enrolled students. Public centers test any registered, paying student, including military. DANTES-funded centers waive the administration fee for eligible service members and civilians. On-base centers serve people authorized to enter a military installation.
Once the appointment exists, log back into My CLEP and print your registration ticket, then write the center's address, contact details, and your appointment time on it - the ticket travels with you on exam day. A useful flexibility: the ticket stays valid even if you show up at a different test center than the one printed on it.

What about name changes, kids under 13, and vouchers?
Name changes after registering are a form, not a phone call. If your name changed since registration - more than a mistyped letter, a married name, a nickname becoming a full name - you submit the CLEP Name Change Request form; significant changes also require a valid photograph and at least one form of identification such as a government-issued ID, school ID, or birth certificate. Processing takes two to three business days, so file it well before test day, because the name on your ID must match the registration ticket exactly at the door.
Registering a child under 13 cannot start online at all. Registration is a form. The exam is the event. When the credit deadline is fixed - a graduation audit, a program start date, a reimbursement window - the registration steps above are the easy part of the timeline.
