What is a passing score on a CLEP exam?
CLEP does not publish a single universal passing score. Your raw score - one point for every question you answer correctly, with no deduction for wrong or skipped answers - is converted to a scaled score between 20 and 80, and that scaled number is what appears on your score report.
The benchmark most people mean by "passing" is 50: the American Council on Education recommends that colleges grant credit for a CLEP score of 50 or higher. But ACE only recommends. Each college sets its own CLEP credit policy, and the required score can vary from exam to exam at the same school - one department may grant credit at 50 while another wants 55 or higher.

How are CLEP exams scored?
The math is candidate-friendly: you receive one point for each correct answer, and points are never deducted for wrong or skipped answers. There is no guessing penalty on a CLEP exam, which is why College Board itself tells you to answer every question - a blank answer and a wrong answer cost exactly the same.
That raw total is then converted to the 20-to-80 scaled score. Scaling exists so that a 55 on one form of an exam means the same thing as a 55 on another form, even when the specific questions differ in difficulty.
Most CLEP exams are pure multiple choice and scored by computer. Two exams are the exception: College Composition and Spanish with Writing include essays graded by two or more college professors, and the essay grade is combined with the multiple-choice score to produce the reported scaled score. When do you get your CLEP scores?
For every multiple-choice CLEP exam, the score displays on your test screen immediately after you finish - you walk out knowing the number. If you tested at a test center, you also receive a paper copy of the score report on the spot.
Within 24 hours after testing, a test-taker copy is available to view, download, and print inside the My CLEP student portal. The two essay exams break the pattern: College Composition and Spanish with Writing post to My CLEP two to three weeks after exam day, once the professor grading is complete.
Scores stay retrievable for a long window. CLEP scores for exams taken on or after July 1, 2022 remain available for 10 years from the test date; scores for exams taken on or before June 30, 2022 remain available for 20 years.
How do your scores reach your college?
The cheapest sends are the early ones. During registration - and any time prior to testing - you may select up to two institutions to receive your score for free. After you have taken the exam, sending your transcript to any institution costs a fee, requested through the My CLEP student portal.
Plan on the official copy, not a screenshot. College Board notes that institutions normally require official copies of CLEP test scores for transcript purposes, so the score you print at home is for your own records, not for the registrar.
Because the two free sends are chosen before you see your score, they pair naturally with the cancellation option: you can name two schools at registration and still cancel the score at the end of the exam if the sitting went badly - the cancel happens before the instant score report appears and nothing is sent.
Can you cancel a CLEP score you do not want?
Yes - but only inside a narrow window. At the end of the exam, before your instant score report appears, the system offers a cancel scores option and prompts you several times to confirm. If you confirm, the score is canceled without ever being shown to you.
The window is a one-way door. Once you have seen your instant score report, the score can no longer be canceled. And cancellation is permanent in the other direction too: a canceled score cannot be retrieved, leaves no record on the Scores page in My CLEP, and cannot be requested from CLEP later. The strategic read: cancellation protects your transcript from a bad day, but it spends the $97 exam fee plus any administration or remote proctoring fee with nothing to show for it. It is insurance, not a plan.
Why does the same 50 pass at one college and fail at another?
Because ACE only recommends.
