What the PCPP1 Actually Tests

PCPP1 — Certified Professional Python Programmer Level 1 — is the OpenEDG Python Institute's first professional-level credential in the general-purpose programming track, and the interim step to PCPP2. The current exam version is PCPP-32-101 (active); PCPP-32-102 is in development. Passing PCPP-32-101 carries lifetime validity, while the 32-102 version is listed with a five-year validity.

The syllabus covers five blocks: advanced use of classes and OOP — inheritance, polymorphism, decorators, static and class methods, attribute encapsulation, composition, advanced exceptions, shallow and deep copying, serialization, and metaclasses; best practices and standardization — PEP 8, PEP 257, code layout, docstrings, and naming conventions; GUI programming — events, widgets, geometry, and toolkits; network programming — sockets, client-server communication, JSON and XML in network contexts, HTTP methods, CRUD, and a simple REST client; and file processing with the program's environment — sqlite3, xml, csv, logging, configparser, os, datetime, io, and time.

There are no formal prerequisites, though the vendor recommends holding the PCAP first. The questions are single- and multiple-select against Python 3.x — multiple-select is where partial knowledge goes to die.

Pearson VUE Center or OnVUE at Home

Per the vendor's exam page, PCPP1 delivery runs through Pearson VUE - authorized testing centers plus OnVUE online proctoring - with the OpenEDG Testing Service listed as the alternative channel for entry-level exams. The Python Institute's exam-policies page names the split precisely: PCAP-31-0x and PCPP-32-10x exams are taken by downloading and launching the OnVUE application.

The official policies page publishes the operating details around that: OnVUE availability runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round, with brief outage windows for maintenance and updates. Reschedules and cancellations must reach Pearson VUE at least 24 hours before the appointment, and cancelling less than 24 hours in advance - or a no-show - forfeits the entire exam fee.

The at-home route makes your room, hardware, and connection part of the exam; the center trades travel for a controlled machine. Either way the paper is the same 45 questions against the published blueprint, and the OnVUE technical requirements are Pearson's published list.

What the PCPP1 Costs Before Any Service Conversation

The vendor lists the PCPP1 exam price from $325, sold as single-use vouchers through the OpenEDG store. Every voucher is one attempt: pass or fail, the voucher is spent.

Fail and the retake rules bite twice — you wait 15 days from the failed attempt before re-sitting, and you buy a new voucher at the same price. There is no free retake in the PCPP1 model.

Against that, the credential itself does not expire: PCPP-32-101 carries lifetime validity, so a pass is a one-time spend rather than a subscription.

Where PCPP1 Attempts Actually Fail

Three patterns account for most failed first attempts we see.

The version split matters more than candidates expect. PCPP-32-101 is the active exam and PCPP-32-102 is in development, and the two carry different credential lifetimes - lifetime validity for PCPP-32-101, five years for PCPP-32-102 per the OpenEDG exam page. Booking into the transition without checking which version you are sitting is an unforced error.

The voucher math is unforgiving. All PCPP1 vouchers are single-use, so a failed attempt means a fifteen-day wait and a completely new voucher at the from-$325 price. With 45 single- and multiple-select questions in 65 minutes and a 70% passing line, the margin for a slow start is thin.
