GARP publishes the format on its SCR pages: 80 equally weighted multiple-choice questions, including one multi-part case study, with a maximum of four hours. The exam is graded pass/fail and is offered in American English only.
The SCR is not a year-round exam. GARP runs it in fixed April and October windows - October 17-25, 2026 is closed, and the next sitting is April 17-21, 2027, with early registration December 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027.
GARP prices the SCR by candidate status for the April 2027 window: FRM, RAI, or ERP holders pay 525 USD early and 625 USD standard, Individual Members 550 and 650, and Non-Members 650 and 750, plus applicable taxes.
GARP states no work experience is required to sit the SCR exam, and the exam is not highly quantitative - a few questions involve limited multiplication, division, ratios, or graphs. The barrier is the ten-chapter curriculum, not a resume.
What the SCR Exam Actually Covers
The SCR syllabus runs ten chapters in the official curriculum, from the physical science to the reporting desk. It opens with Foundations of Climate Change and Sustainability, moves through Climate Change Risk and the policy, culture, and governance layer, and then spends its back half on the practitioner material: Green and Sustainable Finance markets and instruments, Climate Risk Measurement and Management, Climate Models and Scenario Analysis, Net Zero, Climate and Nature Risk Assessment, and Transition Planning and Carbon Reporting. Select required online readings are examinable on top of the book.
GARP's own FAQ sets the level honestly: the exam is not highly quantitative and is designed to be accessible to a wide audience - a few questions require limited multiplication and division, an understanding of ratios or measurement units, or reading a graph. The difficulty is breadth, not math: ten chapters of frameworks, plus the case study that forces you to apply them to a multi-part scenario.
GARP estimates 100 to 150 hours of preparation and reviews the curriculum every year, releasing new study materials each December 1 for the following calendar year - so a preparation plan or a handled sitting is always built against the current cycle's book, not last year's.
Can You Take the SCR Exam From Home?
Yes - verified at three layers, all dated 2026-10-22. GARP's own SCR Exam Logistics page offers two exam formats: computer-based testing at a Pearson VUE test center, or online proctoring remotely through Pearson VUE's OnVUE system at a location of your choice. Pearson's live GARP registration flow renders the SCR exam - exam id 42366 - without sign-in, and its delivery-options step offers In-person at a test center and Online with OnVUE. The official OnVUE view-all catalog lists GARP among the programs that allow testing from home.
The at-home rules come from Pearson's dedicated GARP OnVUE page: Windows 10 or macOS 14 or higher, one display only, a working webcam with microphone and speaker and no headphones, at least 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, every other application closed, and no VPN, corporate, or public network. The system test should run on the same device and network you will use on exam day. Miss the minimums at check-in and the sitting is canceled with the fee forfeited.
The online check-in itself runs through your GARP account: you click Begin Exam, pass to the OnVUE platform, complete equipment and network checks, use your phone to photograph yourself, your ID, and your workspace, agree to the exam rules, close every other application, and meet the proctor. GARP's FAQ is blunt about two online rules: breaks are not allowed during the session, and a phone seen after check-in terminates the exam. Exam Assist handles this whole chain for you.
What the Sitting Costs - the Honest Version
The SCR fee depends on who you are to GARP, not just when you book. For the April 2027 window, GARP's Fees and Payments page lists FRM, RAI, or ERP credential holders at 525 USD early and 625 USD standard, Individual Members at 550 and 650, and Non-Members at 650 and 750 - before applicable taxes, which are calculated at payment. Early registration for April 2027 runs December 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027, and standard runs February 1 through March 31, 2027.
The retake economics carry a live discrepancy worth knowing. GARP's current fees page states candidates who do not pass - or who register and never sit - can re-register for either of the next two exam windows at a one-time reduced price of 300 USD; the SCR FAQ text still shows 350 USD for the same rule. Treat the fees-page figure as the operative schedule and confirm at registration, because GARP has not reconciled the two pages.
Registration includes the study stack - GARP Learning with the full current curriculum, two full-length practice exams, and the Climate PAL tool - with the printed book at 100 USD plus shipping for registered candidates. GARP's policy page, last revised December 1, 2020, allows refunds only within 48 hours of payment and describes a one-time deferral to the next window with an administrative fee; confirm current deferral terms with GARP Member Services before relying on them. When Exam Assist handles the sitting, the service fee is its own line, due only after the agreed result posts.
Where SCR Sittings Go Wrong
- •The window discipline surprises people. The SCR runs only in April and October, registration for the current window is closed once deadlines pass, and scheduling itself closes days before the window ends - October 2026 scheduling closed October 23, two days before the last exam date. A sitting planned without the calendar is a sitting planned to fail.
- •The case study breaks single-question drilling. One of the 80 questions is a multi-part case study, and GARP weights every question equally - candidates who over-train definitions and under-train scenario application walk in with the wrong muscle.
- •The breadth is the trap. Ten chapters from climate physics to transition planning, plus required online readings, against GARP's own 100-to-150-hour estimate - the candidates who stall are the ones who treated a four-hour pass/fail exam as a weekend read.
- •The home check-in ends sittings before they start. One display, no headphones, no VPN, the room scan, the exact-name ID match, the phone out of reach after check-in, and no breaks for four hours - OnVUE cancels sittings that miss the minimums and keeps the fee.
- •Results are not instant. GARP scores after the window closes and posts results to the candidate portal within four to six weeks - a deadline tied to a promotion or a start date has to be planned backward from the window, not from the sitting.
How the Service Works
What You Get
A confirmed booking against the real exam - the GARP Sustainability and Climate Risk Certificate sitting - at home or at a center, inside a live exam window, on a schedule that respects GARP's registration and scheduling deadlines.
A sitting handled by a professional who works the climate-risk curriculum for a living - all ten chapters at syllabus weight, from scenario analysis to transition planning and carbon reporting - against GARP's published format: 80 equally weighted questions, one multi-part case study, four hours, pass/fail.
The result posted on your GARP record. Exam Assist handles the exam sitting end to end, and the service fee is due only after the agreed result posts.
Handling It Safely
Every requirement on Pearson's dedicated GARP OnVUE page is cleared before exam day: the operating-system floor, the single display, the webcam and audio check, the bandwidth floor, the closed-application rule, the no-VPN rule, and the same-device-and-network system test. The ID presented at check-in matches the name on the registration character for character, because an ID mismatch ends the sitting before it begins.
You get the plain version of what the proctor sees and does: the equipment and network checks, the phone photos of you, your ID, and your workspace, the room scan, the no-breaks rule, the phone-out-of-reach rule, and why nobody touches a second screen during the window. Nothing about the day is improvised.
Discretion is architectural. Your GARP candidate portal account, your booking confirmation, and your certificate record stay under your control, and nothing about the engagement is discussed with third parties.
Payment: After the Result
The service fee is due only after the agreed result posts. You never pay for an attempt, a promise, or a maybe - you pay for a passed sitting. GARP's registration fee - 525 to 750 USD by candidate status for the April 2027 window - is separate from the service fee and is settled through the official registration path either way.
If the sitting does not produce the agreed result, the service fee does not move. That is the whole model, and it is the same sentence in the hero, here, and at the bottom of this page because it is the term that matters.
Sittings Handled
Ten chapters from climate physics to carbon reporting, one case study, four hours - and only two windows a year to get it done. They mapped the April window deadlines to my promotion timeline, handled the home sitting against the SCR listing, and the pass posted in my portal about five weeks later. Fee moved only then.
I priced it myself first: 650 as a non-member, the 300 retake safety net if the worst happened. They were straight about the discrepancy in GARP's own FAQ, booked the OnVUE sitting, cleared the room-scan rules with me the week before, and handled it. Exactly the terms they quoted.
The no-breaks rule and the phone rule were what I could not risk messing up at home with kids in the house. They walked the OnVUE minimums line by line, ran the system test on the same machine and network, and the sitting went clean. Result posted, then I paid.
