What the CPTD Actually Tests

The Certified Professional in Talent Development is the ATD Certification Institute's senior credential - the sitting for professionals with at least five years in the field. Its format is unlike the APTD's: 150 measurement opportunities across two separately timed sections, three hours in total.

Section 1 is 90 multiple-choice questions in 105 minutes - four options, one correct answer, +1 point for correct, no penalty for wrong or blank. Then comes an optional 10-minute break. Section 2 is 10 case management problems in 65 minutes: each problem is a short workplace scenario revealed in 3-4 steps, and at each step you select every action the situation requires. Case management scoring is unforgiving in a way multiple choice is not: correct choices earn +1 and incorrect choices lose 1 point. You must select at least one action to advance, and once you move to the next step you cannot go back. Unused time in one section never carries to the other.

The blueprint spans the Talent Development Capability Model with published domain weights: Personal Capabilities 20%, Professional Capabilities 45%, and Organizational Capabilities 35% - note the heavier organizational weighting than the APTD, matching the seniority the credential claims.

ATD CI reports scores on a 200-800 scale with 500 required to pass. It does not publish how many measurement opportunities must be answered correctly - multiple exam forms are equated so one standard applies across forms, and a retaker is assigned an alternate form. Eligibility runs on three pathways: five years of paid talent development experience plus 60 professional development hours, or four years with a current APTD credential, or five years plus an ATD Master program completed within the past five years.

OnVUE at Home or a Pearson Test Center - Your Choice

Both delivery routes are official, and you choose between them. ATD's remote-proctoring page states that APTD and CPTD candidates can choose to take their exam through remote proctoring, testing from a secure location with a live, online proctor. Pearson VUE's ATD program page says the same from the delivery side: exams run in testing centers in the US and worldwide as well as through remote proctoring, and Pearson hosts a dedicated ATD OnVUE page. The handbook carries the one caveat that matters for planning: Pearson's OnVUE Remote Proctoring is not available in some regions.

The at-home route runs on Pearson's published OnVUE minimums for ATD: a computer running Windows 10 or macOS 14 or higher, a working webcam, microphone, and speaker with no headphones or headsets, one display screen only, a stable connection of at least 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, and the ability to close every application except OnVUE. Virtual machines, VPNs, corporate or public networks, secondary or touchscreen displays, phones, tablets, watches, and smart or AI devices are prohibited. Your desk must be empty except the computer, pre-approved items, and a beverage in an unmarked container; the room must be private and quiet, and you must be alone. Check-in includes technology checks, ID photos, and a room scan - and Pearson warns that failing the minimums on exam day can cancel the sitting and forfeit the fee.

One scheduling asymmetry worth knowing before you choose: remote candidates may cancel right up to the appointment time without penalty, while in-person candidates who cancel or reschedule inside 72 hours pay a $125 administrative fee - and anyone who fails to appear pays it regardless of route.

What a CPTD Attempt Costs

ATD publishes one exam fee for the CPTD: $1,099 for ATD members and $1,500 for non-members. It is nontransferable and nonrefundable, and it buys a specific bundle - 18 months of eligibility, one testing attempt inside your pre-selected window, the score report, and the CPTD certificate and lapel pin once you pass. Prep courses and materials are explicitly not included.

The window mechanics matter as much as the fee. You commit to a testing window at application - CPTD exams run in even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October, December) in two-month windows with a blackout month between, and applications are due at least 30 days before the window opens. Changing your window costs $375. Miss the 18-month eligibility window without testing and every fee paid is forfeited.

A failed attempt is bounded but real: you wait at least 30 days and until the next exam window, pay the $375 retest fee, and sit an alternate exam form. Recertification comes due every three years with a $250 application fee on top of the professional development requirement.

The service fee for a handled sitting is separate from ATD's exam fees, and it is due only after the agreed result posts.
