What the ACSM-EP Exam Actually Tests
The ACSM-EP sits one rung above the CPT in ACSM's ladder: the credential for exercise physiologists working with apparently healthy clients and clients with controlled conditions, in clinical, corporate, community, or fitness settings. Like every ACSM exam it is multiple-choice per the official FAQ, drawn from the Job Task Analysis in ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 12th Edition - 140 items in a 210-minute seat time, 125 scored and 15 unscored.
The 2024 domain weights center on assessment and prescription: Exercise Prescription and Implementation carries 40% of scored questions, Health and Fitness Assessment 33%, Exercise Counseling and Behavior Modification 20%, and Risk Management and Professional Responsibilities 7%.
Eligibility is a degree gate: at least a bachelor's with a major in Exercise Science or equivalent from a regionally accredited program - final-semester students are eligible. An equivalent major means a minimum of 21 semester or 28 quarter hours of exercise-science coursework covering exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, applied kinesiology or biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, and exercise testing and prescription. Add current adult CPR/AED with a live practical component; first aid joins the list in 2027.
One honesty note: ACSM publishes the 550 scaled passing point but no pass rates. Anyone quoting an EP pass percentage is guessing.
What the EP Blueprint Covers
Exercise Prescription and Implementation at 40% is the heavyweight: aerobic and resistance prescription for healthy and clinical populations, periodization, progressions, and the adjustments that controlled conditions require. Health and Fitness Assessment at 33% covers pre-participation screening, stratification, submaximal and maximal testing protocols, and interpreting results into programming decisions.
Exercise Counseling and Behavior Modification at 20% tests the client-facing side - motivation, adherence, communication, and behavior-change frameworks. Risk Management and Professional Responsibilities at 7% covers scope, documentation, emergency procedures, and legal boundaries.
Metabolic equations and applicable formulas are supplied inside the exam with an in-exam calculator - the digital whiteboard replaces scratch paper on OnVUE. You are tested on applying the Guidelines' content, not on memorizing its tables.
OnVUE at Home or a Pearson Testing Center
The official EP page states delivery word-for-word: the ACSM Certification exam can be taken in-person at a Pearson testing center, or take it online from the comfort of your own home, office or workplace. Both routes stay open after ACSM approves the application.
Pearson's OnVUE minimums apply on the at-home route: Windows 10 or macOS 14 or higher, webcam, microphone, and speaker with no headphones, one display only, 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, all other applications closed. The Handbook adds the ACSM-specific rules: a 210-minute online sitting includes no breaks - leaving the computer terminates the exam and forfeits the registration - and check-in requires two IDs, a primary with photo and signature and a secondary with signature.
ACSM recommends a personal computer on wired ethernet; work computers and unreliable wireless are the two most frequent causes of technical failed sittings. OnVUE is not offered in China, Cuba, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, or Sudan.
What the ACSM-EP Attempt Costs
The published Exam Only fee is US$460 for non-members and US$350 with membership, each including the US$50 non-refundable application fee; the retest fee is US$235.
The calendar rules bite harder at EP because the eligibility gate is documentary: transcripts and course-content evidence must clear ACSM review before the three-month eligibility window even starts. Extensions are US$50 per three months, up to three, maxing at one year. Reschedule or cancel in the MyACSM Portal a full 24 hours ahead or everything is forfeited.
The retake ladder: 15-day minimum wait, at most 4 attempts in 12 months, and a 12-month lockout after a fourth failure. A two-attempt pass totals US$695 non-member; a three-attempt pass US$930.
The service fee for a handled sitting is separate from ACSM's fees, and it is due only after the agreed result posts.
