Why GRE exam help still starts with the current General Test
GRE exam help is useful only if it describes the GRE General Test you will actually sit. The current exam lasts about 1 hour 58 minutes. It has five scored sections. Analytical Writing is one Analyze an Issue task. The retired long form with two essays, an unidentified extra section, and nearly four hours is gone. Any plan still built on that outline is a plan for a different test.
The GRE General Test remains a common file piece for graduate, business, and law applications. Some programs require it. Some treat it as optional. Some accept it beside the GMAT. The useful first question is not whether the GRE General Test is prestigious. The useful first question is whether a named program still wants a current score, and which split that program actually reads.
ETS does not publish a pass mark. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning each report 130-170. Analytical Writing reports 0-6. Applicants sometimes add the two multiple-choice scores for a homemade 260-340 total. That shorthand is not an official combined pass line. A 165 Quant with a weak Verbal can be a strong engineering file and a weak humanities file. Read the split your programs reward.
This page is the cluster hub, not a second money page and not a reprint of every GRE article on the site. The exam page owns the spec sheet. The cost page owns the full fee table. The Analytical Writing guide owns the Issue essay. The ScoreSelect page owns what schools see. Score, difficulty, study-time, registration, at-home, Quant, and Verbal each have their own owner.
Fees, send rules, and checkout totals move. ETS states the current General Test fee as US$249 in most locations and US$231.30 in China, effective August 1, 2026. India uses a separate ETS India checkout. Confirm the live ETS page before you pay. This hub states the snapshot, then sends you to the cost owner for reschedule, center-change, Additional Score Report, and fee-reduction amounts.
Exam Assist is independent. It is not affiliated with ETS. Official ETS pages remain the authority for registration, identity, delivery, scoring, and score sends. Use this pillar to lock the current GRE General Test facts, pick the next owner, and decide whether you need the sitting handled or only a clearer plan.
- •Current GRE General Test time: about 1 hour 58 minutes, five sections.
- •Scores: Verbal and Quant 130-170, Analytical Writing 0-6, no combined pass mark.
- •Fee snapshot: US$249 most locations and US$231.30 China, effective August 1, 2026.
- •Hub rule: answer the broad query here, then open the dedicated owner.
Choose the GRE General Test path that matches your next task
Do not start GRE exam help with a random tip list. Start with the task that is blocking the application. That task might be exam choice, format, registration, a score target, a weak measure, a send decision, or a booked sitting. Open the owner for that task and finish with a concrete output: a registered date, a program-specific target, a timed baseline, or a booking request.
If you still need to choose an exam, compare the GRE General Test with GMAT Focus on the comparison page. If a school still talks in GMAT numbers, use the conversion page as a translation aid, not as a substitute official score. If you already know the GRE General Test is required, skip vendor debate and lock format, fee, and date.
This hub covers the GRE General Test. GRE Subject Tests are a different family with their own registration and score reports. Do not study a Subject outline because a forum used the word GRE. Confirm the product name on the program page and in your ETS account.
Once the GRE General Test is the exam, separate logistics from skill work. Registration, at-home setup, and ScoreSelect are administration tasks. Verbal, Quant, and the Issue essay are skill tasks. Mixing them into one weekend usually produces a paid date with no baseline and a send plan you have not read.
Confirm the GRE General Test
Open the GRE General Test exam page for the spec sheet. If a business program also accepts GMAT Focus, compare both before you pay for two prep stacks.
Register and pick a room
Use the registration guide for the ETS account, identification, and date. Use the at-home guide if you are choosing GRE at Home instead of a test center.
Set a program-specific target
There is no official pass mark. Build a Verbal, Quant, and Writing target from the good-score guide and the program-requirement page, not from a generic 320 label.
Train the weak measure
Send Quant work to the Quant tips page, Verbal work to the Verbal tips page, and Issue-essay work to the Analytical Writing guide. Do not turn this hub into a second lesson.
Plan sends and retakes
ScoreSelect and the four free test-day sends live on the ScoreSelect page. Attempt limits and wait windows live on the how-many-times page. Read both before you bury a sitting.
Book sitting support
If the date is fixed and the sitting is the product you want, open the GRE service page or the booking form. London, New York, and Dubai pages cover local timing, not a walk-in office.
GRE General Test format, scores, and fee snapshot
ETS states that the GRE General Test lasts about 1 hour 58 minutes. There are five sections. Analytical Writing is always first. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning may appear in any order after that essay. The current design lets you skip, mark, review, and change answers inside a section. You cannot return to a section after it ends.
Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are section-level adaptive. The first section of each measure is mid-range. The second section's difficulty depends on your overall performance on the first. ETS scores those measures from the number of questions answered correctly across both sections and from the difficulty of the sections you reached. That is why the opening Verbal section and the opening Quant section are not warm-ups.
Analytical Writing is one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task. You type in a basic ETS word processor. The tool supports insert, delete, cut-and-paste, and undo. It does not include spellcheck or grammar check. This page stops at those official rules. The Analytical Writing guide owns prompts, scoring, and how to spend the 30 minutes.
ETS reports Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning on a 130-170 scale. Analytical Writing reports 0-6. There is no combined pass mark. Do not treat a homemade 260-340 total as an official cutoff. Build targets from the programs on your list. The good-score and program-requirement pages own that interpretation. This hub does not invent percentiles.
The GRE General Test fee snapshot, effective August 1, 2026, is US$249 in most locations and US$231.30 in China. Each price is one sitting. India uses the ETS India site. On test day you may designate up to four graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors as part of the test fee. After test day, Additional Score Reports cost US$40 per recipient during the five-year reportable window. Reschedule, center-change, and fee-reduction amounts belong on the GRE exam cost page.
ScoreSelect is the send-control tool, not a score editor. On test day, after you view scores at a center, you can send nothing yet or choose Most Recent or All for each free report. After test day, paid reports add an Any option. Some programs require every GRE administration. Read that program rule before you omit a sitting. The ScoreSelect page owns the full lesson.

Issue essay snapshot
One 30-minute Analyze an Issue task in the ETS word processor, with no spellcheck. Open the Analytical Writing guide for the lesson. This hub only records the official task.
ScoreSelect snapshot
Four free sends on test day, then paid reports later. Open the ScoreSelect page before you designate schools. Some programs require every GRE sitting.
Center or GRE at Home
Same GRE General Test score either way. At-home adds room, device, and identity checks. Open the at-home guide before you trade travel for a shared apartment.
A GRE General Test preparation framework
A useful GRE General Test plan starts with a timed official baseline, not with a vocabulary deck. You need a Verbal number, a Quant number, and a sense of the Issue task under a 30-minute clock. Untimed familiar questions hide routing problems. Official POWERPREP practice is the measurement tool. Third-party drills are for the weakness the baseline named.
After the baseline, split the work by measure. Quant on the current GRE General Test is 27 questions in 47 minutes, with an on-screen calculator. Verbal is 27 questions in 41 minutes. The Issue essay is one 30-minute task with no spellcheck. Each measure has a dedicated owner on this site. Study the weak measure there instead of rereading this hub.
Time is not one number for every candidate. The how-long page owns week-by-week ranges. The how-hard page owns why the shorter GRE General Test still feels dense. Use those pages to size the calendar. Then use attempt limits on the how-many-times page so a retake still fits the application deadline.
Common mistakes are predictable. People study the retired four-hour outline. They treat the first Verbal or Quant section as a warm-up and lose the harder second section. They write the Issue essay with no plan because it is only one task. They budget an old US$220 fee after ETS moved the standard price to US$249 on August 1, 2026. They send All sittings to a program that never asked for a full GRE history.
Close the last week with administration, not with a new book. Confirm identification, the center or GRE at Home room, and the four free send designations. If Analytical Writing is still a blank page, open the writing guide. If Quant pacing is the leak, open the Quant page. If vocabulary and dense passages are the leak, open the Verbal page. Do not start a third course seven days out.
- •Studying retired two-essay, six-section GRE material.
- •Skipping a timed official baseline and guessing the weak measure.
- •Ignoring first-section accuracy on the section-adaptive GRE General Test.
- •Writing the Issue essay without knowing the ETS processor has no spellcheck.
- •Paying from a stale fee table instead of the live ETS checkout.
1. Lock the exam and date
Confirm the GRE General Test, not a Subject Test. Register through the ETS account. Leave room on the calendar for score reporting and one retake if the deadline allows.
2. Take a timed official baseline
Sit an official timed practice test. Record Verbal, Quant, and the Issue task separately. A score without a split cannot steer the next two weeks.
3. Train one measure at a time
Use the Quant, Verbal, and Analytical Writing owners. Measure progress with mixed timed sets, not with another passive video pass.
4. Rehearse the room and the send
Decide test center or GRE at Home. Read ScoreSelect before test day. Name the four free recipients only after you know what each program requires.
5. Sit, retake, or get help
If practice is moving and the date is open, sit. If the deadline is fixed and the split is stuck, open the GRE service page instead of buying a fourth question bank.
When GRE exam help should handle the sitting
This hub is not the money page. When the GRE General Test date is fixed and the sitting is the product you want, Exam Assist handles the GRE sitting end to end. The service fee is due only after the agreed result posts. Send the date, the Verbal and Quant split you already have, and the programs that set the bar. Feasibility is reviewed before any sitting is scheduled.
The useful intake is specific. Name the GRE General Test, not a vague graduate exam. Include test-center or GRE at Home, prior attempts, and whether ScoreSelect or a program that demands every sitting is in play. A request for any high score wastes a week. A named split against a named program can be scoped the same day.
ETS fees stay on your card. The service fee is separate and is not collected up front. Coordination stays private on WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord. Use the service page when you want the sitting handled. Use the booking form if you already know the date. Use the London, New York, or Dubai pages only for local timing. Those pages are not storefronts.
- •A graduate, business, or law deadline named the GRE General Test and a date.
- •A timed official baseline already showed a split you cannot close in the remaining weeks.
- •A prior sitting used an attempt and you need the next one handled, not another generic course.
- •You want the sitting reviewed against ScoreSelect and program send rules, not a second format lecture.
GRE exam help questions
How long is the GRE General Test and what is the format?
The GRE General Test lasts about 1 hour 58 minutes and has five sections. Analytical Writing is one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task and always comes first. Verbal Reasoning is 12 questions in 18 minutes, then 15 questions in 23 minutes. Quantitative Reasoning is 12 questions in 21 minutes, then 15 questions in 26 minutes. Verbal and Quant may appear in any order after the essay. ETS builds section-level adaptivity into Verbal and Quant. The GRE General Test is computer-delivered at a test center or as GRE at Home.
What scores does the GRE General Test report?
ETS reports three GRE General Test scores. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning each use a 130-170 scale. Analytical Writing uses a 0-6 scale. There is no combined pass mark. Programs set their own bars, and many read the split more closely than any homemade total. This page does not invent percentiles. Use the good-score and program-requirement guides to turn a program list into a target.
How much does the GRE General Test cost?
ETS lists the GRE General Test at US$249 in most locations and US$231.30 in China, effective August 1, 2026. Those figures buy one sitting. India uses the ETS India checkout. Reschedule, center-change, Additional Score Report, and fee-reduction amounts belong on the GRE exam cost page, not in a second full table here. Confirm the live ETS total before you pay.
What is the GRE Analytical Writing task?
The GRE General Test includes one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task. You type in the ETS word processor. Insert, delete, cut-and-paste, and undo are available. Spellcheck and grammar check are not. The task measures whether you can evaluate an issue and support a position. It does not test field-specific content. For prompts, scoring, and timing tactics, open the Analytical Writing guide. This hub only states the official task rules.
What is ScoreSelect and how many free GRE score sends do I get?
On test day, the GRE General Test fee includes up to four score recipients. ScoreSelect lets you send Most Recent or All from the last five years on those free reports. After test day, paid Additional Score Reports add an Any option and cost US$40 per recipient. A few programs still demand a complete GRE history. Check that policy before you leave a sitting off the file. The ScoreSelect page owns the full send lesson.
Should I take the GRE General Test or the GMAT?
Take the exam your programs accept and the one where your realistic score is stronger. The GRE General Test is used for graduate, business, and law applications. GMAT Focus is built for graduate management admissions. The GRE General Test includes an Issue essay and an on-screen Quant calculator. GMAT Focus does not match that design. Use the GMAT vs GRE comparison, then the conversion page if a school still talks in GMAT numbers.
What does GRE exam help mean here?
On this site, GRE exam help means the GRE sitting is handled end to end, and billing for the service starts after the agreed result posts. You still pay ETS for the GRE General Test registration. This hub keeps the official format, score, and fee snapshot and sends narrow questions to dedicated owners. The money page is the booking owner when you want the sitting handled.
Can I take the GRE General Test at home, and how often can I retake?
Yes, where GRE at Home is offered. The score is the GRE General Test score. Recipients do not get a different scale for an at-home sitting. The room, device, and identity checks are stricter at home, so read the at-home guide before you pick that route. Retake limits live on the how-many-times page: plan the calendar there, including the wait between attempts. Do not burn a date on a room that cannot stay private for the full 1 hour 58 minutes.
GRE General Test resources on this site
Use the exam page for the GRE General Test spec sheet. Use the service page when you want the sitting booked. Use the cost, Analytical Writing, and ScoreSelect pages for those three jobs. Use Quant, Verbal, score, registration, at-home, study-time, retake, and comparison pages for the remaining tasks. London, New York, and Dubai cover local timing. The GMAT pillar is only for exam-choice questions.
