Salesforce Administrator

Salesforce Certified Administrator

The Salesforce Certified Administrator credential is the foundation badge for anyone who configures and runs the world's most widely used CRM — and it's the gatekeeper exam recruiters scan for before they read the rest of your résumé. It covers eight weighted domains spanning user management, security, automation, data, and the apps your business runs on. A single failed attempt costs another $100 and a 24-hour wait, so it pays to walk in ready. This page breaks down exactly what's tested, how it's delivered, and how to get it done right the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the Salesforce Certified Administrator exam is built — at a glance

60

Scored questions

Sixty scored multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, plus five unscored pretest items mixed in that don't affect your result.

65%

Passing threshold

You need about 39 of the 60 scored questions correct. The result is Pass or Fail — there is no numeric score and no penalty for guessing.

8

Weighted domains

Questions are drawn from eight outline areas, each carrying a fixed percentage of the exam — from Data & Analytics at 17% down to Agentforce AI at 8%.

Timing & pacing

You have 105 minutes for 60 scored questions, roughly 1 minute 45 seconds each — comfortable for most candidates. There is no required hands-on lab or essay; the difficulty is breadth, not the clock. You can flag and revisit questions and review your full set before submitting.

How questions are framed

Items are scenario-based: a short business situation followed by "what should the administrator do?" Many ask you to pick the right declarative tool — a flow versus a validation rule, a permission set versus a profile — so memorizing definitions isn't enough. Multiple-select questions tell you how many answers to choose.

WHAT'S TESTED

Eight domains — bars show each area's share of the scored exam

1

Data & Analytics Management

17%

Import and export tools, data quality and deduplication, reports, report types, dashboards, and sharing analytics with the right audience.

2

Configuration & Setup

15%

Company settings, the user interface, user management, profiles, permission sets, roles, and the org-wide security model.

3

Object Manager & Lightning App Builder

15%

Standard and custom objects, fields, relationships, page layouts, record types, and building Lightning pages without code.

4

Automation

15%

Flow Builder, validation rules, approval processes, and choosing the right declarative tool for a business requirement.

5

Sales & Marketing Applications

10%

Leads, opportunities, the sales process, price books, products, forecasting, campaigns, and lead conversion.

6

Service & Support Applications

10%

Case management, the case lifecycle, queues, automated case routing, and core Service Cloud capabilities for support teams.

7

Productivity & Collaboration

10%

Activities, tasks and events, the Salesforce mobile app, Chatter, and tools that help teams work together inside the org.

8

Agentforce & AI

8%

The newest domain: configuring Agentforce, AI-assisted features, prompts, and how admins enable and govern AI in the org.

Weights reflect Salesforce's current published exam outline. Because there is no per-domain pass mark, a weak area can be offset by strength elsewhere — but the three biggest domains (Data & Analytics, Configuration, and Object Manager) together account for nearly half the exam, so they reward the most preparation.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day

At a Pearson VUE test center

You schedule through Trailhead Academy and sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Pearson VUE testing center. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and watch the room. Onsite slots are typically reserved 24–72 hours in advance.

Online, proctored via Pearson VUE OnVUE

You take the exam from a private room at home using Pearson VUE's OnVUE software. Before launch you download the OnVUE app, run a system and equipment check, take photos of yourself and your ID, and complete a 360-degree webcam room scan. A remote proctor monitors the session throughout.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with a name matching your Trailhead Academy registration exactly. Online testers also take a check-in photo before the exam unlocks.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter while you test, and the workstation must pass a compatibility check.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera the whole time; there are no scheduled breaks. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing connection can pause or void the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

The entry-point credential for the Salesforce ecosystem

  • New and aspiring Salesforce administrators launching a CRM career
  • "Accidental admins" who run Salesforce as part of a wider role
  • Business analysts and ops staff formalizing their platform skills
  • Career changers entering the Salesforce ecosystem from another field
  • Future consultants and developers who need the prerequisite badge first

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

No formal requirements — but the breadth is wide

  • No formal prerequisites — anyone can register and sit the exam
  • Salesforce recommends 6+ months of hands-on admin experience
  • Comfort in a real org — Setup, Object Manager, Flow, and reports
  • Knowing when to use which declarative tool, not just what each is

Difficulty: No single topic is deep, but the exam spans eight domains and tests judgment in realistic scenarios — and the newer Agentforce & AI domain catches candidates studying from older guides. Most people invest 40–80 hours across Trailhead, hands-on practice in a free Developer Edition org, and practice exams. That breadth is exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.

Straight answers about the Salesforce Certified Administrator exam

What score do you need to pass the Salesforce Administrator exam? +
You need 65% to pass. Of the 65 questions you see, 60 are scored and 5 are unscored pretest items, so you need roughly 39 of the 60 scored questions correct. The result is reported as Pass or Fail rather than a numeric score, and there is no penalty for guessing.
How many questions are on the exam and how long is it? +
The exam contains 60 scored multiple-choice and multiple-select questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions, for 65 total. You have 105 minutes to complete it. With no required essay or hands-on lab, the real challenge is the breadth of platform features rather than the time limit.
Can I take the Salesforce Administrator exam online from home? +
Yes. Salesforce now schedules exams through Trailhead Academy with Pearson VUE, and you can choose an online proctored slot you sit from a private room at home, or a Pearson VUE test center. Do I need experience or prerequisites to take it? +
There are no formal prerequisites — anyone can register. Salesforce recommends 6+ months of hands-on platform administration experience and familiarity with configuration, security, automation, and reporting. The exam rewards practical knowledge of how the platform actually behaves, not memorized definitions.
How much does it cost and does the certification expire? +
Registration is $200 USD plus applicable tax, and a retake is $100 USD. The credential does not expire on a fixed date, but you keep it active by completing Salesforce's release-based maintenance modules on Trailhead, which are published with each major platform release.
