NMAT by GMAC

NMAT

NMAT by GMAC is the management-admission test built around speed and accuracy, accepted by NMIMS and 20-plus business schools across India, the Philippines, South Africa, Nigeria and beyond. It is the gateway exam for NMIMS Mumbai, ISB's early-entry route, SDA Bocconi Asia Center and the Asian Institute of Management. The exam runs on a fixed seasonal window with only three lifetime attempts per cycle, so a weak first sitting and a tight retake calendar can cost you an entire admission year. This page breaks down exactly what NMAT tests, how it is delivered, and how to get it done right.

EXAM FORMAT

How NMAT by GMAC is built — at a glance

36

Language Skills

36 questions in 28 minutes — the tightest time-per-question on the test. Reading comprehension, para jumbles, fill-in-the-blanks, synonyms and antonyms, and grammar/usage error spotting.

36

Quantitative Skills

36 questions in 52 minutes — the most generous timing but the heaviest content. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, modern maths, plus data interpretation and data sufficiency sets.

36

Logical Reasoning

36 questions in 40 minutes covering verbal logic and analytical reasoning — arrangements, coding-decoding, syllogisms, blood relations, and statement-conclusion sets.

Sectional timing & your chosen order

Each of the three sections has its own fixed time limit — 28 minutes for Language Skills, 52 for Quantitative Skills, 40 for Logical Reasoning — adding up to a strict 120-minute total. Time does not carry over between sections, and you pick the order in which you attempt them at the start. Once a section's clock runs out, it closes for good.

Marking & how scaled scoring works

Every correct answer earns +3 and there is no negative marking, so leaving no question blank is the right play. Raw scores are converted to a scaled score of 12–120 per section to normalise difficulty across test forms, and the three are added into a total of 36–360. There is no fixed pass mark — schools set their own cut-offs by percentile.

WHAT'S TESTED

Three equally-weighted sections — bars show each section's share of your total score

1

Language Skills

33%

Reading comprehension, para jumbles, vocabulary (synonyms/antonyms), grammar and error identification — all under barely 47 seconds a question, the most time-pressured section.

2

Quantitative Skills

33%

Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and modern maths, plus data interpretation and data sufficiency. Calculation-heavy with no on-screen calculator — accuracy and speed both matter.

3

Logical Reasoning

34%

Verbal and analytical reasoning — arrangements, coding-decoding, syllogisms, blood relations, and statement-assumption/conclusion sets that reward pattern recognition.

Because the three sections are weighted equally, a lopsided profile — say a strong Quant score paired with a thin Language sectional — can drag your total below a school's cut-off even when your headline number looks fine. Many programmes, including NMIMS, set sectional minimums, so balance across all three is what actually protects your candidacy.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit NMAT — and what to expect on test day

At an NMAT test centre

Test centres run in 70+ cities across India. You verify a government photo ID, store your belongings, and sit the exam on a centre workstation in a monitored hall. Your unofficial sectional and total scores appear on screen the moment you submit, so you walk out knowing roughly where you stand.

Online, remotely proctored

The at-home option runs inside a locked-down secure browser, monitored by AI plus a live human proctor. You pick the date, time, and online mode at registration, then complete an ID check, a 360° webcam room scan, and a system check before the exam unlocks. It is the standard route for Rest-of-World candidates, including the Philippines.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with your name matching your mba.com registration exactly. The proctor captures and verifies a photo before the secure browser releases the exam.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone within reach, and a full webcam sweep of the room. No one else may be present, and only approved scratch material is allowed.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera throughout. There is no full break to step away, and the secure browser locks down other apps. Looking off-screen, talking aloud, or dropping connection can flag the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

NMAT is built for management-school applicants in India and beyond

  • MBA applicants targeting NMIMS Mumbai and its campuses
  • Candidates applying to SDA Bocconi Asia Center, XIM, or ISB
  • International applicants to AIM (Philippines), UCT, or Lagos Business School
  • Working professionals adding a second test alongside CAT or XAT
  • Test-takers who prefer no negative marking and immediate unofficial scores

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

No exotic content — but the clock is the real opponent

  • A bachelor's degree (or final-year status) per most accepting schools
  • Solid high-school maths and working English comprehension
  • A clear, distraction-free room and stable connection for online mode
  • Speed: roughly 1 minute per question, and far less in Language Skills

Difficulty: NMAT's individual questions are easier than CAT's, but the brutal sectional clocks — 36 Language questions in 28 minutes, no calculator, no going back once a section closes — turn it into a pure speed-and-accuracy test. A single slow Quant set can eat your whole buffer. That time-and-pressure trap is exactly the pain point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about NMAT by GMAC

What is a good NMAT by GMAC score? +
The NMAT total is a scaled score from 36 to 360, built by adding the three equally-weighted sections (each scaled 12–120). A 210–220 is broadly competitive for most accepting schools, while NMIMS Mumbai and other top programs effectively need roughly 230+, which lines up with around the 90th percentile. Because the score is scaled and sections are weighted equally, a balanced profile across Language, Quantitative, and Logical Reasoning matters more than maxing out one section.
How is the NMAT by GMAC exam structured? +
The NMAT by GMAC has 108 questions split evenly across three sections — Language Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning, 36 questions each — in a total of 120 minutes. Each section has its own fixed time limit (Language Skills 28 minutes, Logical Reasoning 40 minutes, Quantitative Skills 52 minutes) and you choose the order of the sections at the start. Every correct answer is +3 and there is no negative marking for wrong answers.
Can I take the NMAT by GMAC exam online from home? +
Yes. NMAT by GMAC is offered both at test centres in 70+ Indian cities and as an online remotely-proctored exam you take from a private room. You pick your date, time, and mode at registration. The online version runs inside a secure browser monitored by AI plus a live proctor, with an ID check, a 360° room scan, and a system check before the exam unlocks.
How many times can I take the NMAT by GMAC exam? +
You can take the NMAT by GMAC up to three times in one testing year — a first attempt plus a maximum of two retakes, with no-shows counting as an attempt. There is a mandatory gap of 15 days between attempts. Because the testing window is fixed, scheduling early gives you room to retake and improve your score within the same cycle.
How long is an NMAT by GMAC score valid? +
NMAT by GMAC scores are used for admission in the current cycle the exam is taken for; they are not carried forward to future years. If you retake, NMIMS considers your first valid attempt (one with scores in all three sections plus a total), while many other accepting schools take your best score — so confirm each programme's policy before you retake.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I see my NMAT score? +
You settle only after your verified passing score is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
